Nope...hopeful MN BA checked about 4pm and the cupboard was bare (even behind the Wytchmaker). Both shelves. OG Black Metal still at Specs, however.

Depends on the trade and the trader. In some trades it's the anchor, others an extra. Everyone likes it though.

    Hey all,

I was at the Spec's on Mason this past weekend (visiting family in Katy) and much to my horror I saw four-packs of Pro-Am on the shelf, which the store manager confirmed were at least five months old.

Manager, seeing me examining the cans for an expiration date: Oh yeah, those are five months old. The flavors may have mellowed out a bit.
Me, in almost total disbelief: Thanks (all the while thinking to myself YA THINK?)

As if this wasn't bad enough, they also had two six-packs of Modus Hoperandi with enjoy by dates of JANUARY 1. Not only are these six-packs THREE MONTHS PAST DUE, but they were probably canned half a year ago! Now I get that the Spec's in Katy likely has substantially less turnover than, say, the Spec's in Downtown Houston, but they really need to get that under control. The poor fool who actually buys that old Modus could end up getting turned off craft forever due to one bad experience. I've been to the Mason Road store several times during the past year, and I've come across old beer nearly every single time. Here's hoping they get their act together, although I'm not expecting much.

This is a common problem at bottle shops all over the state. There are still plenty of shops in Austin with Pro-Am. I actually bought some a couple weeks ago and it was still pretty tasty.

Adding to the previous post, I know there's always a lot of excitement on these boards for when new out-of-state stuff gets the greenlight for distribution in Texas, but I gotta say, I would proceed with caution in some instances, at least when it comes to buying bottles or cans. The out-of-state stuff is really only as good as the distributor, who will hopefully bust ass to get the product on the shelves, as well as the beer manager of a given store. Given my recent experiences with Spec's I'll likely continue to favor drinking local when buying packaged beer in Houston or Austin, which is great for me since some of the local stuff is as good as anything you can get on the national scene.

That said, none of this applies to draft. It's not like the fantastic beer bars in Houston would serve me old beer even if they tried. The painstaking attention to detail, devotion to their trade and heightened levels of awareness of the proprietors -- not to mention turnover -- of places like Hay Merchant, Petrol, Cottonwood, etc., are as good a freshness seal as one could hope for.

So can we talk Jester King into brewing the OG again ?

There was a response about it in the old Everything Jester King thread. IIRC (and I may not, so please don't crucify me), there are no plans whatsoever to make it a regular beer again. However, it might get a special release on an anniversary, or the brewery might hold a homebrewing workshop where they show how to make it, or something to that effect.

EDIT: Thanks to Heretic for finding the original post! Glad that my memory isn't completely terrible.

Topic: Jester King Black Metal Imperial Stout-Original Recipe

The guys at Jester King are homebrewer friendly and I emailed them and not only did they send me the recipe for their current farmhouse version of Black Metal, I pushed back and asked for the original higher ABV Black Metal and they sent it back, so this is for the bigger one. If anyone wants the farmhouse, let me know.

Good thing i hate ipa's, my beers age rather well, so buying them pre aged works for me

I believe on the shipping to other stores front, that they can and do ship to other stores but cannot ship out of county. Such is why elgin and bastrop specs, if they get anything special, it stays there til bought.

    From what ive gathered anyway.
