Hiya folks! I'm going to be staying in the Sandy Hill area of Ottawa for two months this Summer (July-August) and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on the best places to buy a beer? Any bars/pubs you absolutely recommend? Any good stores? I always see topics about Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, but never about Ottawa, so I don't feel bad about asking

I don't think Beau's is too far away. A car ride definitely.

Relative to your location, Rideau/King Edward is the best LCBO. Bank/Walkley and Orleans Innes/Tenth (I believe) also carry basically everything.

I don't know if I would pin point any one place in Ottawa as being my favourite or must try, but here's a bunch of popular spots all fairly close to you: Brothers Beer Bistro, Black Tomato, Pub Italia, The Manx, Arrow & Loon, Wellington Gastropub. Brasseurs De Temps in Gatineau is a great brew pub.

My favourite place (besides the one that is currently burned down) is L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer. 550+ bottles plus a few Quebec taps.

If you want to stay caught up on your Quebec stuff, Broue Ha Ha and Marche Omni across the river can take care of that (as can a ton of other places, really).

And definitely stop into Beyond The Pale. They're open Friday-Sunday (though often sell out of beer and close Sunday). A new nano-brewery brewing some great stuff.

If you do get a chance to get to Aylmer, there is also Bieres du Monde, in the Galeries mall on rue Prinicpale. It has over 300 labels in bottles. Most are Quebec microbrews, and I would say it is at least on par with Broue Ha Ha and better than Marche Omni.

I can attest to the Orleans LCBO...it does carry quite a selection

Ottawa breweries (some better than others, most of them just so-so):
    Beau's
    Beyond the Pale
    Broadhead
    Kichessippi
    Hogsback
    Cassel
    Ashton (brewpub)
    Big Rig (brewpub)
    Mill Street (brewpub)
    Clocktower (brewpub)
    Brasseurs de Temps (brewpub)
    Trois Brasseurs (brewpub - bleh)

In my opinion, Beau's and Beyond the Pale are the best in the city (Beau's isn't actually in the city though). Kichessippi is a reliable last resort. I don't really get Broadhead. Brewpubs are hit and miss, but I enjoy most of them (I seem to be one of the few who isn't a fan of BdT).

I'll be in the Ottawa area in a few weeks and was wondering if there are any shops in Ottawa/Gatineau that carry Cantillon (I'm all but certain LCBO and SAQ do not, but correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks.

I've had two beers from BdT: a tripel (which I forget the name of), which was passable, and their DumDuminator, which was some of the vilest swill I've ever tasted. Both were overpriced.

As a side note, I have yet to make it to Beyond The Pale as I'm a bit far from it and I am quite busy. I plan on it though! Also planning a trip to Beau's with some people in my program.

Negative. That would be cool, though, I could use a re-stocking on some Cantillon.

Beau's is a good trip, ricochet. World class people that will give you a tour, have a few pints on their patio. Good stuff even if the beer can be meh.

No shops, but I think l'Autre Oeil, a bar, in Gatineau usually (?) carries some:

Ah, yeah, there's that as well. I was there a few weeks ago, here's the Cantillon menu as of then: http://i.imgur.com/2dAXPJP.jpg

Plus everything else on the site and 10 Quebec taps. Prices are very, very reasonable. I was charged a little less than those prices in fact.
