Inspired by a post in the General forum I did some research and the results are too interesting to just close the browser so here's a bunch of links that every traveller to the northern reaches of the Upper Palatine will find most interesting

Real traditional Zoigl is still brewed in 5 places, Eslarn (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eslarn), Falkenberg (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkenberg_(Oberpfalz)), Mitterteich (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitterteich), Neuhaus (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuhaus_(Windischeschenbach)) and Windischeschenbach (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windischeschenbach). There's a plethora of other places brewing unfiltered beer and calling it "Zoigl" or "Zwickl" beer but that's not the real thing as is laid out here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoigl

Here's a detailed list of the places (including links, adresses and phonenumbers) who still make Zoiogl in those towns:

    + Zoiglkalender Eslarn 2013: http://www.zoiglstum.de/html/zoiglkalender.html
    ~ Falkenberg: http://www.markt-falkenberg.de/freizeit-kultur/zoiglbrauen.html
    + Zoiglkalender Falkenberg in 2013: http://www.markt-falkenberg.de/fileadmin/Rathaus/Zoiglkalender_2013.pdf
    ~ Mitterteich: http://www.mitterteich.de/zoiglwirtschaften.html
The Zoiglkalender for 2013 is on the same link, just scroll down
    ~ Neuhaus: http://www.zoiglbier.de/neuhaus/wirte.html
    + Zoiglkalender Neuhaus 2013: http://www.zoiglbier.de/neuhaus/kalender.html
    ~ Windischeschenbach: http://www.zoiglbier.de/wirte.html
    + Zoiglkalender Windischeschenbach in 2013: http://www.zoiglbier.de/kalender.html

For those considering a trip, keep in mind that Windischeschenbach, Neuhaus, Falkenberg and Mitterteich are all along a 10 mile stretch on the german A 93 Motorway just north of Weiden.

And for those who prefer using public transport: Windischeschenbach (or short Eschawo) is on the railway line (Hof -) Marktredwitz - Weiden (- Schwandorf - Regensburg). Neuhaus is now a part of the city of Eschawo, both town centres (with the breweries and Zoiglstuben) are about 15 min. walk from Windischeschenbach station.
Two stops north of Eschawo is Wiesau, from where there are buses to Falkenberg and Mitterteich on weekdays. Eslarn has a good bus connection from Weiden railway station, more or less every hour on weekdays, plus a few connections on sat/sunday.
I've written a detailed article about it on my blog/website in Dutch, see what Google Translate or some program like that makes of it: http://bierentrein.wordpress.com/zoigl-kommune/.
Be sure to check opening days and times of all Stuben beforehand!

There was a report on Quer yesterday about Zoigl-Kommunbrauer fighting a case against bigger breweries. They tried at the German patent office, but failed. Looks like they will go on to the European Court.
Anyway, nice little report about Zoigl, here's the link (in German, well some of it..):

Great video. Oberpfälzig dialect was almost impossible to understand. Personally, I don't think they should have to right to patent the word Zoigl. Has anyone here had one from of these places? I'd love to know what they taste like… maybe later this summer.

I'm lucky enough to have been to four of those five towns. Zoigl is a wonderful tradition, that thankfully seems to be getting a second wind. Some of the beers are outstanding, but what really makes Zoigl is the atmosphere of a Zoiglstube. Just like sitting in someone's house or back yard.

There are another couple of places where they have communal breweries, but it's not called Zoigl. Neuhaus an der Pegnitz, for example.

Have been to practically every Zoiglstube that has "Echter Zoigl vom Kommunbrauer" that can be reached by public transport over the past 5 years. Plus a few others that had brewery-Zoigl. Highly recommended.
