I'm sure many of you have already noticed, but, I just saw that Reds Rye is no longer Reds Rye PA and is now Reds Rye IPA. Does any one know if they changed the recipe? Or, did they just change the label? maybe they see it more as an IPA than PA even though its labeled as Rye Beer on BA. I loved it last year but have not had it this year, I hope that if they did change the recipe it was for the better.

I thought it was always supposed to sort of be an ipa, but they just liked the way rye pa rhymes with ipa

I think it's just a name change, from Founders:

    "Red’s Rye IPA

Perhaps you’ve been confused about how to categorize Red’s Rye into a beer style. The name could lead you to believe that it’s a pale ale or a rye beer or an amber. To clear things up, we are changing the official name of the beer from Red’s Rye PA to Red’s Rye IPA. Red’s Rye IPA is first and foremost an American IPA. We hope this name change will help people understand that.

Note: Red’s Rye IPA will remain available on draft year-round but bottles will be moving to our seasonal lineup in 2014 rather than our specialty lineup, which is where we plugged them in this year."

I always considered it a Rye IPA. Delicious stuff!

I always figured they meant for it to be an IPA since Rye PA is just a play on IPA. I guess they felt like it was necessary to clarify what style they mean for it to be.

They definitely did not change the recipe. The Rye PA play on words didn't really carry over well to the consumer. They thought is was a rye beer, pale ale, or red rye ale, when in fact it is a Rye IPA. I believe at 70 ibu's it's the hoppiest year round beer they make. I really hope they decide to can this beer!

I've yet to have this one. Seen it, but never gone for it. I have a buddy in IA and it's one of his all time favorites. Heard nothing but great things about it, so I'm gonna have to snag a pack when the next batch is bottled.

I always thought it was a pale ale brewed with rye, I guess it was just over my head but now that its been mentioned, Rye PA sounds just like IPA:wink:. I really hope they can it as well!

I like how the pack size went down while the price point went up. Definitely staying away this year at $15 a 4 ok. :grimacing:

They can fiddle with the name all they want, but nothing will get me to buy their stale product near me - which is a shame, 'cuz I like this beer when reasonably fresh.

10.50/4 pk in MI and I still don't buy it. Even though it's one of my all time favorites as well. I do go get growler fills at the brewery for 10 however.

I think their switch to a 4-pack (and price change) is really hurting the sale of this beer. It used to be my go-to at $8.99/6-pack. I'm still seeing batches from August at several reputable beer stores. While it has hops to spare when fresh, I still won't be purchasing any 5-month+ old IPAs any time soon.

I know of one not-so-reputable store than still has some 6-packs that are a year and a half old.

I would let the brewery know. They had old product picked up by me, and replaced with 2 week old product!

Favorite rye beer! However, there is good discussion on "death of IPA" forum that goes hand in hand with this.

Any idea what the approved "shelf-life" is according to Founders?

There was a year and a half old 6 pack sitting on the shelf at a store here recently...made me sad to see. Then it dissappeared...Im hoping someone didn't buy it

This beer is still fantastic even when not fresh--it's just different. But fresh it is otherworldly. Well worth $2.75/bottle in my opinion. To me, the real test is what other beers can you get for cheaper that are comparable? There aren't very many beers with the intoxicating blend of hops and rye that Red's contains.

Still cheaper than 90% of things that come in bomber and 750 formats.

Also, the days of $9 six-packs for anything worth buying are soon going to go the way of the Dodo. Prices, as a general rule, will always rise and continue to do so barring a recession/depression.

True, but it will still remain more expensive relative to other brews in the same market. In that case it will still be a much harder sell than it was. And I'm a fan of the beer.

For reference, Red's Rye is priced the same as Backwoods Bastard ($12.99) rather than Breakfast Stout ($10.99) -- at least in most of Chicago it is. You're right that there aren't many Rye IPA offerings out there, but for the same price (or less) I can find a 6-pack of a lot of other well-crafted 70 IBU IPAs I'd want (e.g. Union Jack, Racer 5, even Sculpin is cheaper per bottle).
