And if a store does that to too many customers, they're not going to be a store anymore.

That kind of store would not get my business.

Sure. That's why it would be better to say "we didn't get any" instead of "it's gone" or worst of all "I won't sell the bottles I have to you."

To the guy who wants the whole case, I'd say "Oh damn, I JUST sold the whole case to a guy who got here right before you"

Best of luck finding KBS in VA, as well.

Since this a KBS thread let me say that Founders did a great job with this event. Soooo smooth & easy I truly expected a shitshow & it wasn't even close! Great release

Thanks. I got two four packs in 2012. But none in 2013...seemingly because I didn't kiss enough merchant ass.

I agree. Founders did a great job and everyone had an excellent time. It was great to have both last years and the new KBS. Also tried a mix of Breakfast Stout and Rubaeus, which was very good. Met some nice people out front beforehand who were sharing different beers and we hung out all day. I'm ready for next years release party!

The store that doesn't treat me special for repeated regular business will lose my business, and if you're interested in long term success, you might be more concerned with the guy who keeps coming back...
just my opinion, but I think I earn something buy spending money consistently, and a lot of retailers seem to agree with me

I only had a few at a dive bar in NE last year, only reenforcing my amusement at how worked up people get for this one. I'll ask the owner next time I'm there if he's getting the same (oddly large) amount as last year, then potentially shoot you a BM, if I remember of course.

I think if KBS was more like Uncle Jacob's: $14/12oz msrp or whatever, people would simmer down on this one. And Founder's would see more profit to reinvest in the KBS production. And/or barrel aging FIS which is something I would absolutely love to see.

O god, a barrel aged Impy stout would be ridiculous!

KBS is a bourbon barrel aged coffee forward imperial stout. Contrary to popular belief, it is not FBS thrown in barrels, and it is not FIS blended with coffee and thrown in barrels.

All three beers have their own unique recipe.

Good thread. I think the bottom line is (or should be): politeness and civility will get you a long way both on the consumer and retailer end of things. Even with the madness of the KBS Chase, you'd be surprised how far a smile and a low-keyed bit of politeness will go (as your heart is racing on your KBS Quest). Certainly is going to be my M.O. on my quest....

This. Allocation of any limited beer is wholly dependent on how much of said brewery's product you sell, therefore the people who continuously buy Founders product from me, aka my regular customers, will always get first priority over cherry pickers, because they are the ones who ultimately determine how much limited product my store receives. As far as the rant goes, its really not extreme. I have other stores calling me to ask what they should sell singles for as to not get bad reviews because people piss and moan about spending $5-7 on a single 12oz that is incredibly hard to get. Thats how bad it's gotten. Everyone wants KBS "no matter what" but then complain about anything from availability to price. Here in GR, it's an extreme headache for all retailers, not just me.
I had never thought of it that way, but you are certainly right. Thank you, I will keep this at the forefront of my mind when we start selling it. Cheers.
Yup, I can choose to not sell to someone if I don't like them all day long. Just takes exactly that, saying I thought they were already under the influence and refuse sales.

Spot on. At a store like mine, with 3 employees, the time it takes to set up anything like this is not worth it. Takes away from my ability to help customers as well as keeping up with sales reps, special orders, etc etc.

First, I'm not your buddy, pal. Nah, my job is to provide insight and advice in selecting a specialty beverage, as well as helping customers in any way, shape or form. If its my duty to serve you, then it is also my duty to serve the guy in line in front of you too, who I just let buy an entire case of KBS because I didn't care about the other customers. Then you get mad and pitch a fit because I was being unfair. Street runs both ways. No one wins, and everyone always finds a reason to get mad because no one likes to hear no.

In that situation, if someone comes in with a wife, I'd gladly sell to the wife, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the guy that brings in his wife, mom, dad, son, brother, sister and uncle to buy bottles for him so he can screw everyone else out of it. Direct quote from years past "Oh, theres a two bottle limit? I'm going to send my wife and son in from the car to buy some more." Nope, not flying. Then I have to be the asshole who says no, because I'm trying as best I can to make it as fair as possible considering the circumstances. Again, as a retailer, you can't win. Someone is always disappointed and they always blame it on you.

Again, how would you feel if first come, first served allowed the guy in front of you to buy the last case? Would you not feel angry, and then blame it on us for letting someone buy a whole case and not making it so you can get some? I'm not here to argue, just to drink beers, but I wanted to let people see the frustration of retailers when people get hysterical about beer. You rarely see many industry members posting here about their experience with things like KBS day.

As far as my regulars, I direct you back to this:
They pay my paychecks every week, they get first dibs, period.

Cheers all, lets just drink some beer!

Why would anyone feel angry if the person in line got the last case? That's what first come first served means. Of course I wouldn't be angry.

That actually happened to me with BCBS Coffee last year. My six year old who was with me exclaimed "Shit." I just told her "That's the breaks, kid."

I don't want to tell you how to raise your kids, but I've had a trash mouth since I was six and it hasn't served me well. Habits are hard to break and perceptions of close minded folks can close doors.

I have been into the craft beer chase scene about a year and KBS is on the list. Win or lose with this year's release I like going for the chase nonetheless. I'm happy for those who get it even if it is case quantity or a few bottles. The thrill of the hunt...

But we had just zipped through traffic for 20 minutes and just missed grabbing a great, limited beer. It seems like a reasonable response to me. She did not:

    1. Bitch out the person who bought the last four pack.
    2. Bitch out the store manager for selling it in too large of quantities.
    3. Get online and start bitching about the whole process.
    4. Bitch out Goose Island for selling out to AB-Inbev.
    5. Bitch out Goose Island for not making enough of the stuff.
    6. Tear a tantrum like tons of other kids who don't get something they want (a simple one word exclamation certainly doesn't qualify as a tantrum).

She simply kept her cool and asked, "Daddy, don't any other beer stores have that beer? If so, you need to get your ass back in the car and drive us to another store."

And we did, and we got a four pack. I am so proud of my little girl.
