i am sure this has been posted before...i have been looking for a bottle shop that is my goto store...one i can buy cases of limited release beers, special orders, etc. i found one that is local to me...the owner gave me a book of craft beers in which i can order from. so it seems this guy is pretty motivated to get my business. the guy really has no knowledge of beer in terms of taking care of it (storage, rotating expired beers). i walk in today to see if he can get some bottle sof the stone mint choc stout and while he was attending to anotehr customer, i looked at the bottle dates of some ipas. CCB Jai Alai which is only 80 miles away, was bottled on January 18th, Great Divide Titan was bottled in February of 2011 (20 months old)!!! so, out of personal experience, would you explain to the guy that he his beers are not well kept (he has his craft section at the entrance but on the west side of store where the sun shines in most of the day) and many of his beers are out of date? i think if he would have fresh beer in his store it would attract way more customers like myself but with year old ipas on the shelf, i am not buying anything that does not have a bottle date due to the track record.

a very slippery slope. You have the guy who is willing to go out of his way and accomodate you by letting you do special orders, so I wouldnt piss on his floor by telling him why you wont buy something. Maybe casually mention, maybe ask if his distributors have a buy back program. I wouldn't say "I'm not buying beer X because its old as shit"

So have you actually bought from this guy? Also, it sounds pretty bad to say you expect to be able to order cases of limited release beers.

Easiest thing to do is just find another shop. There's a guy near me who sells everything for $1-$2+ more per bottle than another shop. I'm not going to tell him he's wrong (and he may not be, anyway); I just go somewhere else.

so, the guy wants your business, is friendly and eager to help, but you're not willing to give him some simple advice to make his business better so that you can increase your chances of getting more rare beer? if my take is accurate, know that allocations of limited-release beers are based on how much a store orders, so if he sells more, he gets more, and that's good for both of you.

but I know that shop sells a good bit of beer, and gets the rare stuff. If he can charge more for it, and people buy it, whos fault is that really?

OP - the bottle shop in my hometown in OH does this. They had 2-3 year six packs of Honker's on the shelf covered in dust. I told them it was expired based on the date on the label, and they said ok thanks. I went back later, and it was still there. Some people dont understand, nor do they care to.

I will rephrase limited release beers. On the book he gave me there were seasonals that said limited in the description. These beers are not rare as in brewery release or only certain shops. The area I live in I have to drive an hour to Orlando to get seasonals such as terrapin wake n bake or victory summer love. I wanted to clarify that. I am looking for other shops but nobody will do any orders for me if stuff they do not stock. This is the only store that has offered to do that for me

If you are will buy the whole case I can't imagine why they wouldn't be willing to at least try to order it, there's no risk to them at all. At my store I'll order whatever someone wants if they are buying all of it and it's reserved with a credit card # or they pay up front

It's not my place to tell someone how to run their business. If something they sell doesn't meet my specifications I just don't buy it.

At the same time, craft beer enthusiasts have an interest in there being as many craft beers shops as possible. Proximity is important, course; but, also, more [well-run] competition means better things for the consumer, whether it be better prices, promotions, etc. (Although, I guess it means more thinly-spread limited releases, assuming fixed production of those limited releases.)

And, you can argue that we could contribute to this by informing vendors just what we do or don't like, since with more information, they can do a better job, which should be better for us consumers, overall.
