I managed to snag one of these too, got it a couple days ago. This is my first Abyss ever so I'm stoked to try it!

Wow, I was so wrong about this release it is not funny. Dissident was so much easier to get this year. Nothing has moved this fast around here as The Abyss did. I wonder if this is how its going to be from now on ?

I found this year's Abyss online and picked up a few bottles. I enjoyed the 2011 vintage much more; it had a better bourbon backbone for me.

That's exactly how I felt about 2010, leading me to only get one bottle of 2012, which I still have yet to try because I'm not even that excited about it.

I wonder how 'different' the vintages are, versus how much expectation one has after having <insert hyped annual beer here> and then waiting a year or some time to have it again, all the while that expectation and memory feeds upon itself - like your classic fishing tale where the fish grows with each telling.

That being said, I've been drinking '11 Abyss throughout the year since I got so much of it last year and when I cracked open a '12 I really did not notice anything to be lacking. Never had '10 so I can't compare to that.

Considering there are dozens of things that can effect your perceived taste and relying on memory from a year ago of that taste, these opinions shouldn't be taken too seriously. A beer is close to impossible to brew identically year after year but they get pretty damn close. With a few exceptions there is no way you could possibly say for sure that the 2010 is different than 2011. What you ate, what you drank, what mood you were in etc could imprint in your mind how you perceived the beer tha last time you had it. That is why jokes are made about "X" beer is no where near as good as the 2010 version.

It is also funny when people say "I just had a 2008 Abyss and the 2012 is no where near as good". Really ? You are drinking a 4 year old beer.

It's sad that The Abyss still hasn't hit in Texas... Guess I might have to trade for it

Yeah, it is amazing how long it takes to get here. I have heard 3 more weeks but it wasn't from the most reliable source.

Yeah I heard 2-3 weeks. It is by far my favorite beer, but this is just a joke having to wait this long

Still waiting for it in So Cal, but was lucky enough to try on tap at Bruery Provisions.

Kept checking with Total Wine, and they kept telling me they weren't sure when they were going to receive.

It's possible they could get a later bunch via their distributor, but it was 2 weeks ago we were seeing it in San Diego.

I tried the 2008-12 vertical at the pub. Obviously, the bottles had different age on them, so it was not an apples to apples comparison. Of note, the 2008 was less carbonated and not nearly as vibrant as the other vintages (presumably due to past its prime). The 2009 or 2010 was probably my favorite (honestly prolly couldnt distinguish in a blind tasting). The 2012 seemed most similar to the 2010. The 2011 stood out like a sore thumb. Thinner and a bit muddled.

    Just my experience...

Which TW? I'm finding that each one is more or less beer-centric than others.

Tustin for the most part, but also called HB and Brea. Maybe it sold it really fast and I missed it, but they could never give me a release date.

Tustin Total Wine received and sold out of the 1 or 2 cases they got on November 30th(They also got Sam Adams Utopia that day too). It's possible that they are trying to get more from their distributor or an employee is just stringing

I kind of got that feeling when they release Westy 12. I'm checking all the time, so will keep doing so. Thanks!
