If Union Jack is a Single IPA, then so is Sucks. But yes, I do agree that Maximus should replaced regardless. I wish they would replace Maximus with Hop Stoopid in 6 packs. You really think Maximus has the same amount of hops as Sucks? I think Sucks is dry hopped A LOT more.

I dont have a lot of NZ hop experience, but i detect LOADs of Simcoe in the aroma.

Hop content determines IPA/DIPA line not ABV... so no it is not the same... And also Maximus flows off the shelves here... Once again probably from people who do not frequent sites like this and look at rating and read hype. Personally I think it says a lot about a beer like Maximus to always be around fresh and have it be such a middle of the road offering to people on this site. The truth of the matter is they keep it year round for a reason... It sells well and people love it. Maybe not some people on here but most normal(ya I said it) people do.

Ya, I know.... Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. But do not get me wrong I love sucks, Just got to my area and I got 3 6's of without hesitation. I just prefer Maximus because of the Malt back... Unlike some I just find it benefits IPA/DIPAs rather then hurt them. But I think the lesson here is Lagunitas, for the size they are can really make some world class hoppy beers!

Completely disagree. By that rationale, Sculpin, Blind Pig and Big Eye must be double IPAs. Name a regular IPA that is 8%.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sucks year round....But any reason why this new batch still says Limited Release if its year round now ???????

Don't have a dog in this fight but there are plenty of "single" IPAs that are 8% or above (according to BA, not me)

    Most notably:
    -Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye
    -Oskar Blues Deviant Dales
    -Oskar Blues G'Rauch
    -Golden Road Burning Bush

Not trying to prove anyone wrong here, just thought it would be a fun time to try and find single IPAs above 8% and report my findings.

    Cheers!

Ola... The difference tween doubles and singles and triples and even fractional IPA's is pretty sketchy from a recipe point of view. For Lag, the even the DayTime recipe is slightly more expensive to brew than the regular IPA, and the difference is not the malt cost! The pounds of hops are similar; its the variety that makes the cost AND the hop profile flavor difference.

The Maximus (brewed with the same essential hop bill since 1996!) was our first shot at figuring out what a double might be and it uses exclusively 'old school' hops like Willamette and Liberty and Cascade, so its hop profile is somewhat modest compared to the sucks which uses almost all new school' hops, which are mostly way more expensive due to basic demand for them, although the Sucks isn't really a statistically bigger beer than the Maximus.

Its true that 'names make conversation easier', but a rose by any other name would... well... By any sort of pre-2000 definition the Sucks is a triple, but things never seem to stop changing.

...btw... the Sucks WILL become a year-round brew and when it does it will be in a 32oz bomber (think of it as a mini growler), but things are going a little slow for that because the glass company is dragging its ass on getting the bottle ready for us. I have read that some here think that a 32oz bottle is stoopid, but then we already have a beer called Stoopid, so I'm cool with that... lol......

“ …the Sucks WILL become a year-round brew and when it does it will be in a 32oz bomber.”

I am interpreting the above statement to mean that once Sucks becomes a year-round product that the intention is to solely package it in 32 oz. bottles. Is it possible to package it in multiple formats? E.g., 32 oz. bottles and 12 oz. bottles?

    Cheers!

    Yes. Why not??

Ruination is sitting in front of me in both bombers and 4-packs . . . .

You really can't go wrong with Ruination! I have a growler fill in my fridge

Enjoy your two formats of Ruination! I will be putting the Sucks in multiple formats, 32oz mini-growlers and 15.5 gal kegs, prolly 7.25 gallon kegs too (both of which will yeild 16oz pints!)... and of course there'll be full-sized growlers.

In structuring a brand I am careful to give more than a little thought to how I want to present it and to what end. Notice that we don't do cans. I suppose that some would say that brewers should put every flavor they brew in every package possible to gain as many sales as possible from as many peeps as possible, but isn't that the kind of crap that BIG brewers get into? How about a 24-pack, no- how about a 30-pack suitcase of aluminum cans of Sucks? Why not both?

I just plain think that a 32oz bottle of Sucks next to the 32oz bottle of King Cobra sounds like fun.

    ...call me stoopid...

    Cheers all....

The quart bottle is a 'fun' idea. However I dont always like to commit to essentially drinking three beers, when cracking one. That is more my problem I suppose.

If its priced close to the equivelant per oz that it is now, it would be around 4.50 a quart, which would be nice as well.

I personally do not think you have a “problem”. I also don’t want to always drink “three beers” and I prefer the option to just drink a single 12 oz. beer in my home.

I would be imprudent for me to state that DogTown is “stoopid”. He certainly has the right to make business decisions. I would like to believe that he would like to hear feedback from his customers on packaging options.

    Cheers!
