Pucker Up with Nugget Nectar [IMG]
With The Mad Elf entering hibernation mode, now seems a fitting time to unleash our revered mid-winter seasonal, Nugget Nectar. With a heady collection of American hops, Nugget Nectar will rekindle your romance with the succulent humulus lupulus overload you’ve come to expect from this bold Imperial Amber Ale. “Nugget Nectar was inspired by fresh new hops rolling in from the harvest,” said John Trogner. Nugget Nectar is intensified with whole flower Nugget cones added to our hopback vessel and dry-hopped with our patented HopsCyclone™ technique. Keeping freshness in mind, we are shipping Nugget Nectar as fast as it is packaged. You can expect cases, six-packs, and bombers to start appearing in Central Pennsylvania in mid-January and expanding through our eight-state distribution area over the following four weeks. Draft Nugget Nectar will be released in mid-February and into early March.

January 15th release date for bottles and draft 3-4 weeks after. I was curious yesterday as well and asked them on their facebook and that's what they responded with.

So are you saying that Troegs was the only brewery with a hop harvest issue last year?

Maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but this is the first time I can recall anyone attributing a poor hop harvest to the way NN tasted last year. Personally, I just attributed the different taste to problems getting the recipe just right at the new facility. That seemed to make more sense, especially as I've seen other breweries having similar problems when moving to a new brewing facility (RR being the most obvious example). In any event, given Troegs' track record with NN, whatever the problem was, I have every confidence they'll get it ironed out.

At least in my mind, a much greater problem last year was the beer's availability. Last year was the first time I can ever recall having a problem finding NN in local stores (and now that I live in Morgantown, I don't exactly expect the problem to get any easier). Even draft NN, it seemed like it came and went in just a few weeks. It seems like the demand for this beer has greatly increased over the past couple of years, to the point that I'm worried I won't be able to find any, unless I make an extra special effort (hopefully I can find it in and around Pittsburgh, but right now I don't know what to expect). Anyway, as always, I can't wait to try my first sip of the new batch as soon as it's released.

That's why I questioned the statement since I hadn't seen a poor hop harvest reason for NN or any other beer for that matter. As far as availability, that also may have been due to the new facility. Or it may be due to your location [I feel your pain and Morgantown being a college town is probably flooded with macro beer]. Although I didn't try it again last year after the first 6 pack, I learned that subsequent batches were better. I'm hoping for a return to form this year right from the start.

Last year I was in Baltimore during the NN release, having lived there since 2007. Up until last year, I never had a problem finding as much NN as I wanted; often times you could still find it on the shelves in May and even June. However, last year was a completely different kettle of fish. Many of the places I went to indicated that they only received a single case (whicy typically was purchased the day they got it in), and even beer bars that usually have bottles of NN through the summer ran out it in less than a month. I can only assume that Maryland's allocation was cut back, either due to a reduction in the batch size or an increase in Troegs distribution area.

As for Morgantown, Troegs isn't distributed here (at least I've never seen it anywhere around town), so yes, I agree, finding NN around these parts will be very difficult indeed. :-)

Really? Where did they get the fresh NN? Are they carrying it at the brewery now? Been clearing out the fridge in hopes of landing my first case soon...

And what's going on with the Troegs website?

Employees were able to get a case as their pay case starting last week. One of them was nice enough to bring a few to the tasting.

Actually there was no sarcasm in there. I've always had a soft spot for the 22oz bottle (actually, I absolutely adore Sierra Nevada's 24oz bottle, in my opinion all beers <8% should have a 24oz option.)

But I do agree that the price-per-ounce that is usually placed on 22's these days is ridiculous. Unfortunately the market has followed the soda model, where the 'convenience tax' of the format has gotten insane (i.e. Diet Coke 2 liter at Giant: $0.99 on bonus buy. 16oz diet coke at Wawa: $1.80 or whatever the hell it is these days...)

Plus a NN bomber and matching pint glass make a real nice gift package for trading buddies.

"But I do agree that the price-per-ounce that is usually placed on 22's these days is ridiculous"

I think that's the primary reason why ClockworkOrange is so incensed about the 22 ounce format.

My feeling is that Troegs should go with one or the other (not both). Given that they seem committed to the 6 pack format, it seems crazy to have 22 ounce bottles, which typically sell for half again (per ounce) more than what you pay for a 6 pack. That's despite the fact that there's less glass, less cardboard, less paper, fewer bottle tops, and I assume less labor in producing the 22 ounce bottles. Plus, I assume Troegs has to use a different bottling line (or has to modify the exiting one) in order to have a separate 22 ounce bottle format.

Seen in that light, I think ClockworkOrange's comment is understandable. I know that typically the only time I ever buy 22 ounce bottles is when that's the only thing left on the shelf, and so I have to buy it if I still want to drink some NN.
