    hey,

looking for some help, good sirs.

coming to San Fran for the march 10 week and i have a few quick questions:

    1. any beer events happening that week?
    2. other than driving up to Russian River's brewery, any other suggestions of places to get my funk/sour fix?
    3. anyone interested in trading for some Ontario or Quebec beer? I have some hard to find stuff, depending on what style you are into.

No clue where we're stay in SF and how long we'll actually be in San Fran. we're non-touristy tourists, so we'll have to figure out which is the least cheesy area to be in.

    thanks in advance

RR sours I think are probably your best bet up here. I know Almanac is starting a barrel aged thing with a sour or 2 but don't know when they plan on selling their offerings.

i may be in the wrong state to say this, but i'm not a hophead. so, really, anything that isn't an IPA would make me happy.

Since you want sours, after you've had your fill at RRBC, you might want to consider renting a car and driving up the 5 to Portland. It's about 10 or 11 hours so you can leave early from San Francisco and get to Portland in time for dinner. Go out for drinks afterward then spend the entire next day eating and drinking. There are plenty of amazing places to eat and you can have your fill of beer at Cascade, Hair of the Dog, and Apex which are all very close to one another (one could even walk from place to place if he or she is inclined to do so). You can then have an early breakfast the next day and drive back to San Francisco in time for dinner and drinks.

    so here's the funny story...
my parents lived in Portland for 15 years. i started getting into good beer in their last year in Portland.
so, a year ago, i was reading up on Cascade, thinking "that is one really awesome brewery. i wonder where it is." Look up the address and almost puke. it was a 10 minute drive from my parents' house. yep, missed out on Cascade.

Yeah you won't want to miss out on it. It's either that or drive down to OC to check out The Bruery but I think you'll have a more amazing time driving north. While you're in San Francisco, make sure you check out City Beer, especially if you can't make the trip to Cascade. The times that I've been there, they've had unique and interesting beers on tap and you can order from their reserve bottle list, where they'll have stuff like Cascade Figaro, for consumption on site. Also, even though you say you're not into hops, you might want to give Cali beers a chance to change your mind. Ask us for a list if you're at all interested.

doubt we'd do the drive. might be too hectic considering it is a 1 week trip

SB/PR is a bit far for a day trip I'd think. 3-4 hours each way from the city. Having said that, hotels generally aren't to expensive in Paso or the nearby towns. SB is a little further south from Paso.

Yeah it's a bit far, but considering he's from Toronto and he's staying in San Francisco for a week, a day trip somewhere isn't out of the question. I've always just gone to the FW's Buelton location so I don't know how the tap list at the Barrelworks differs from what's available at Paso Robles, but it seems like there's an emphasis towards their barrel-aged and sour ales at Barrelworks so rather than getting a possibly gimped list somewhere else, he can just go to Buelton and get the whole nine yards. Of course if Paso has a similar list, then that would be preferable.

I just checked FW's site and got this list for their Paso location:

Based on that, I'd suggest Buelton if the OP is interested in making a little more effort as the rewards appear to be more of what he's looking for.

Odd, they (FW) took down the page that had the tap list for Barrelworks off their site. I remember seeing Sticky Monkey on it.

I'd skip Buelton and hit Tahoe, Yosemite, or Santa Cruz/Monterey.

Certainly, if it's for outdoor activities. Not really for beer though. I was in Monterey a couple of weeks ago and ate at this seafood restaurant. I asked for some local beer options and got Dragon Slayer IPA. It was one of the worst beers I ever had. I'd take a San Miguel Pale Pilsen over that.

Check out Sante Adairius Rustic Ales in Capitola next time! Great Belgian-ish inspired beers, plus barrel aged and sour stuff all made by one cool dude.
