Now begins the long, arduous task of hops selection. This will take a while. First, let's see if the crowd wants to narrow the field for Flavor/Aroma hops by specifying American varieties only. By American varieties, I mean hops that are cultivated mainly in North America and are not generally associated with another continent. For example, US Saaz would not be an American variety for our purposes. Some may wonder why I'm even asking this question, but with Nelson Sauvin and perhaps a few other foreign hops finding their way into American IPAs, I thought we'd better make sure.

This poll will be open for 48 hours.

I am loving the AU/NZ varieites now layered in with some "C" hops or Amarillo. One of the best IPAs I have made to date was a combination of US and English varities. Given both of those experiences I would like to see a blend of multiple countries here.

I vote for American hops because they'll either already be had, or be easier to get, or cheeper. Or something. At least we can chant USA! USA! USA! once we've made our beer.

I said yes... The Australian and New Zealand hop varieties are great but this beer was made what it is today by America... USA, USA, USA !!!!! (said with a thumb up, in Jim Duggin's voice, with a 2x4 on my shoulder, and an American flag wrestler bikini on.)

The very idea of an 'Averagely Perfect American IPA' without perfectly average American hops would be...on average...the perfect oxymoron.

All American for me. Incidentally I'll be "dry feathering" with bald eagle wings and sustaining my boil with the exhaust of a 427 big block

My guess is take the number of chronic posters x 3.

There are a lot of people who lurk. You can see that

Maybe that should be the last question. I will at some point and I'll try to get a sample to VikeMan.

I expect I'll try the next time I brew an IPA. That probably won't be for several months though, so I won't be among the first to have brewed it. Assuming there are no obvious flaws in the recipe, newbies who ask about IPA recipes might get directed to it. It would be easy enough to develop an extract version. Maybe that's why Vikeman was asking about differences in light and extra light extracts a few days ago?

OP: "I'm a newbie looking for a good IPA recipe for my first homebrew"
Response1: "Start here: <url for final recipe, extract version>"
Response 2: "Yeah, but use some New Zealand hops, dude!"
Resonse 3: "And cut the carapils. That stuffs a waste."
    Etc....

I'm a part time poster (of questions usually, not answers ) and a full time lurker. I find I can learn more from you guys' banter than from answers to some dumb question I may post. Not sure how that figures into your calculation

I've done a lot of recipe conversions from AG to extract or AG to partial mash so maybe I'll throw in my two cents at that time
