What is the red splatter on this years label supposed to be? I have went through 3 cases already and have been embarrassed to ask, but I cannot figure it out. Any ideas?

If you go to the lagunitas web site it has the same image, only in black, right by their name.

I would think others may have more thought out or detailed explanations, but I just assumed that since the beer was made in "shame" due to not being able to make brown sugga that the red splatter was supposed to be a tomato being thrown at the brewery's face - type of thing

Last year the bottle was different, had a santa type guy on it, I assumed the splatter was one of the reoccurring images lagunitas uses, like the dog which is on many(all?) of their beers. I think if it was a tomato splatter they would have used it last year before everyone fell in love with this beer.

Love those guys, but they really need to start labeling their beers to style. The "sucks" brand should say Double IPA on it somewhere. I can't wait until the Chi-town facility is up so us east coasters can get the product much fresher!!! I also hope they go to cans in the near future.

I always thought of it as a paint splatter, as in protesters throwing paint on things they disapprove of...

This is what I assumed, even though it's not clearly a tomato. I guess it being a paint splatter would make sense, too.

The fact that we even have to question what it is supposed to be means it sucks.
Maybe thats part of their grand plan to go along with the name. I call it being lazy.

Has anybody who's curious about the red splatter bothered to email the brewery? I would but I don't give a rat's ass about labels, I just care about the beer.

I would be disappointed if they started labeling to style. They are a unique brewery and the no-style thing is kinda part of their uniquititiousness.

I spoke w/a Lagunitas rep at a beer tasting. He said they will build the tap room first and ship the beer from CA. Then they'll build the brewery around the tap room, so you can sit there and watch the progress. It sounds like a great idea!

When people who don't know lagunitas look at this package they read the brown shugga part first and are imidateley confused...I love the brewery but they would be better off labeling this beer as what it is instead of what it is not.

Exactly! Why would you not label a beer style what it is? Especially with all the craft beers on the shelves these days. This is clearly against every good tenant of marketing. For all we know, these guys could have been twice as big by now with better marketing.

When I first saw it I wondered if they changed it from the Santa Cookie (great label) to the splatter because the Santa thing could cause some state regulators to reject the label (Santa image on alcohol.) Complete speculation on my part but given how tight assed some states are (NH & Founders Breakfast Stout) that could have been a factor.

Fantastic beer. I've had an embarassing amount in the past week.

They are one of the most popular craft breweries in the US, growing at a great pace and more in-demand than ever. I don't think they need to mess with the formula too much.

This is exactly what I've always thought it was. They have a rather dry sense of humor so it would make sense. I mean, they did call their own beer "Lagunitas Sucks".
