1/18 Bottleshare at Upright for Fantasia release?

Discussion in 'US - Northwest' started by HaveUSeenMyCellar, Jan 9, 2013.

  1. My girlfriend and I are visiting Portland for the holiday weekend, which is conveniently the same weekend as an EPIC release at Upright for their esteemed Fantasia (unfortunately, we missed out on last year's release).
I'd be happy to bring a few nice beers to share if others are down (also open to IP trades for CA stuff (I am close to Russian River...gotta love both sides saving on shipping, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh? ^_-).

If interested, list what you can bring to entice others to show up as well (the more the merrier). Maybe a theme of sours or Stouts? (I love sours, she loves stouts)

Also, would love recommendations on things to do (the best food trucks, rated bottleshops/tap houses/breweries, destinations/attractions, and maybe a romantic restaurant or two to thank the gf for joining me on what is looking to be a beer centric trip).

  2. I won't be in Portland, however I can recommend Kornblatt's Deli on NW 23rd. BEST rueben sandwiches you'll ever have.

I'm into a bottle share (haven't been able to make it to one of these around town yet due to work, but I'll be off that Friday). Anyways, are you suggesting this be held at Upright? It seems like a bad idea to volunteer their space. Lots of places in town have been incredibly generous in offering up their spaces for bottle shares. Perhaps someone who knows the proprietor(s) of some such establishment could ask on our behalf? Anyways, check your bms, you should have a message soon about trades and suggestions.

  4. I agree with your sentiments. Upright's very limited space and the amount of folks that will be showing up on 1/18 make a bottleshare there a bad idea, imo.

Im in. let me know what texas or omaha stuff you want.

  6. I've never been to Upright or Portland. I had a premonition that Upright may be a bad venue and even worse with the release. We did an epic bottleshare at Lost Abbey for the Ultimate Box Set release that was very successful (though their space was perfect for it).
Something close to Upright would be perfect so that people don't need to travel too far and can just bring their coolers with them to Upright, get their Fantasia, then head to the bottleshare with little effort. I didn't see anywhere within walking distance like this. Suggestions on alternate venues?

  7. You're coming all the way from Texas for a release? So far, you win the futhest traveler award. :)

lol, happy coincidence. coming in to look for a place to live. I am so tired of texas. Happy to set up some trades as well.

ack. anyone that could grab a few bottles for me and bring them to the fantasia release, i would be happy to pay you, or bring jester king stuff, or other locals, or whatever else...
maybe some brewery only upstream stuff or nebraska brewing? (in omaha right now)

Not sure if you've had any of the Upstream brewery only stuff, but I've had a couple and they were terrible, and very very very flat. Just a heads up before you pop on some.

Me too, a while back they had issues. every one they replaced for me though. have not had that issue for a year or two though.

  13. 2nd that....if anyone can get 1-2 bottles for me and bring to the bottleshare, that would be awesome.

Anyone have recommendations for a venue. Want to give them plenty of heads up.

My two cents (or maybe even less, since I can't even make the release) - there is absolutely no way anyone should plan for a bottle share inside of Upright during the release event itself. The place will be a madhouse. Space, tables, and patience will be limited (although likely better after a recent staff change). It just wouldn't work out.

In the past, several of us have brought bottles and either congregated upstairs at the tables near the restrooms or passed bottles down the line downstairs in the hallway. We did this the hour or so before the doors opened. I'm not saying this is cool and its likely not approved of by the brewers, but you're also not on the street. Really not appropriate for a full on bottle share, but for a couple bottles, it has worked in the past. Just bring your own glass.

Unfortunately I missed out. I saw Shmeals haul then I saw beermongers twitter saying "we're out." Hopefully it will turn up elsewhere. Last year's batch (and I'm pretty sure it was the first batch ever) was one of my all time faves.

I didn't mean to imply causality. I don't find him to be douchey at all. I don't even know if he bought from BM. Last year they had a two bottle limit.

I know you didn't. I'm not a fan of bulk buying and then bragging. Especially small batch highly desired beers.

Most of those bottles aren't for myself. I'd rather go and buy in bulk and redistribute it to friends than making them all go out on the wild goose chase. FYI I got those after BeerMongers ran out.

  23. Can you bring a bottle to bottleshare? :-D

I would, but I can't make the "bottle share?" before the Fantasia release.

Quite possibly. Send me a BM

I would not suggest doing this. Neither the hallway or upstairs cafe are covered under Upright's liquor license, and last time something like that happened it looked like Alex was going to have an aneurism.

Ok, so the consensus is that a bottle share at upright is a bad idea that should not and will not happen. Still, I think the idea of a bottle share is a good one (thanks to the op for proposing it). Does anyone have any other ideas for a venue? As I mentioned before, I know of a couple of venues that may be amenable to this. If nobody else steps forward, I'll check with them this weekend, but if anyone knows the proprietors of any such establishment, it might be better for them to ask.

Perhaps check with Common's for a bottle share after the release?

Friday night might be a tough sell at most places, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Yep, this is one of the places I had in mind. As kscaldef said, though, it's Friday night, so it's totally understandable if no one wants to host a bottle share. I think the original idea was to have it before the release. I know this will put out some of the locals with 9-5 jobs, but might put less strain on any potential host, both by having during less busy hours and by making it a smaller event.

Also, I'd love to have an excuse to check out the Commons tasting room. I love their beer (Bourbon Little Brother is definitely a contender for "Beer of 2012" in my book), and am ashamed that I haven't yet made it there yet. I'd heavily recommend any of the out of towners coming in that weekend check out their beers.

I would be up for a tasting. Luckily that Friday is my friday off so I can go to a tasting as early as places open. Unfortunately places like the Commons won't open before the Fantasia release, but hopefully we can find somewhere else. Beermongers may not object if the tasting is done at noonish and not after work hours?

I wouldn't object to an "after party" tasting somewhere either. So everyone can attend. By 6pm I doubt I will want to be at Upright anyway and have no additional plans that night (or any money left most likely).

  35. So, we're looking at Common's? Friday afternoon?
I know we gotta check out Cascade, HotD, and Deschutes (though, again, I am not a good person to recommend which is a good venue). I am sure if we choose one, I can talk to the people there and convince them it's a good idea. :)

To my knowledge, no one has asked the folks at The Commons. It would be rad if that worked out, but there are no plans as of now.

Commons does not open until 5 on friday.

Deschutes and HotD are both mob scenes on Friday after work, although HotD might be mellower in the afternoon. I consider it exceptionally unlikely Deschutes would okay a bottle share. I have occasionally heard of bottle shares happening at HotD, but I get the impression you need to be pretty tight with Alan. I could be wrong, though.

I have no clue how amenable Cascade would be, but it's got a decent layout for such a thing.

  38. I sent e-mails to HotD and Cascade....I will let you know the outcome when I hear from them.
Is Peche n Brett going to be gone by next week? I want to make sure I get a bottle or 2. Can anyone help me understand the supply and demand of this beer?

I just so happen to be visiting Portland next week from Wisconsin and would love to get in on a tasting or bottle share at this event. Never been so I'd like to meet some BAs if possible. Could bring some Surly Syx and Darkness and some New Glarus Fruit beers if people are interested.

  40. Darkness is always a welcome addition.
I have some Syx and tried to bring it to a bottleshare here in the Bay Area and apparently everyone tried it and told me it was no good. I still haven't opened mine. What are your thoughts? Serendipity would be AWESOME. My roommate and I tried it at the same bottleshare and are trying to get him 6 bottles since he liked it so much. Any R&D beers from New Glarus? Sorry...just a fan of many of the beers in your area.
Again, glad to have you join in on the fun. :)
