Spent what passes for the Southern California winter drinking stouts and barleywines. Craving some hoppy goodness so I popped open a 6 week old bottle of Nelson tonight. Holy sh*t what a great beer. Time to head up to the brewery for some more.

Alpine Nelson - Is there a better single IPA out there?

    No there is not.
  4. When that beer is good (and I've had some off bottles), it just might be the best single IPA out there. Absolutely incredible.
  5. No. There isn't.

    Nelson is so *@#$U(@# amazing.

I think RPM IPA and Zombie Dust are quite comparably good.

Nelson gives me wood.... but Duet, Sux and Union Jack hang exceptionally well.

    Sucks isn't a single IPA.

I think Nelson at its best is completely unstoppable. But not every bottle I've had was at its best.

Your right... I was thinking IPA vs Dbl IPA as "single," instead of "single hop."

Fk it...Sux is still fing awesome :)

  14. Societe's Pupil is excellent enough so I don't need to make the 1.5 hour round trip to pick up Nelson.

  15. I have not had anything Alpine (cue somebody sending me some just because I haven't had any ;)). Buuuut... Aroma Coma puts me in a coma. Love that stuff!! Drakes just started to distribute in Portland (hint, hint, Alpine) so I can't wait for some aroma coma to be in my fridge ASAP.

I'll cast in another vote for Societe's Pupil over Nelson. It's honestly splitting hairs but if I had to pick just one, Pupil.

    Nelson isn't a single-hop IPA.

  19. What else is in it? I interpreted the OP question as "single hop IPA's" but maybe he just meant "IPAs".

There's a difference between single-hop IPA and Single IPA. I believe the OP is looking for a single IPA (vs. DIPA). Also known as - IPA. And yes, Flower Power fresh is better than Nelson.

Other NZ hops. By single-IPA the OP meant "IPA" vs double or tripple IPA's.

You'll have to send me some for a blind tasting. Alpine Brewing is 20mins from me.

If any beer could top Nelson it is Duet, but Nelson edges it slightly. After that is probably Kern JO IPA.
  24. Nelson is pretty much king in my books.

Alpha Supreme from Beachwood BBQ & Brewery is pretty close! IMO. A very hoppy pale ale full of Nelson hops. Maybe the closest to Alpine's Nelson.

MacNCheese is dead-on. I was trying to distinguish single IPAs from doubles and triples. Gotta try me some Flower Power. Wouldn't think that would be too hard to trade for.

Nelson is my #1. Close runners-up (in order) include RPM, Pupil, Duet, Alesmith IPA, Blind Pig and good Sculpin.

Hell, I'd rather drink Nelson than most DIPAs.
  30. They should come up with a beer called Pure Exponential Nelsonness.

Jinx. jtmartino owes me a coke.
  34. I got me some Keene right when they tapped it at O'Brien's a few weeks back, and I didn't think it tasted anything like Nelson. It was wonderful, but i just didn't see the Nelson likeness.
  35. I think they may have fudged with the recipe a little from the Toronado Anniversary beer to Keene Idea. I had the 25th Anniversary at the pub and it was like Nelson on steroids...unreal. With that being said, Keene Idea is amazing as well.
  36. drgarage

    drgarage Initiate (0) California Aug 19, 2008

Agreed. Keene is decidedly different from the Toronado anniversary beer at the release party. Less crazy dank, for one thing. I preferred Nelson to both, though.

Nelson is without comparisons, plain and simple. Truly a unique beer that has that Alpine " terroir " that you can only get from Alpine's beers. Everything else is battling for second place.

    Cheers....
