Bracket? What bracket? Some guy out on Hennepin selling raffle tickets for a billion dollars. I gave him $20. He said I didn't win.

Haha nevermind, I was referring to the Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge.

The cans look pretty cool and the styles are refreshing and different. I went and took a peek at the place yesterday. I think this will be the most unique looking taproom in the state when it's done. But they don't look even close to being ready to open...

Chaz, have you checked out the location. The physical address is on the west side of Tyler Street. You can drive around back to the east side of the building and see a huge garage door that looks to have brewing equipment in it. They say they will be open this spring. But if that is indeed the location looks like they haven't done much...

Judging by recently-declassified internal memos (before and after photos) they've done a lot! Announcing a Spring 2014 opening was probably ambitious on their part, but oh well: Gotta grab the Craft Beer-obssessed drinking public's attention away from all of the other outfits opening within the spring/summer time frame! :D

So bizarre, what is the deal here. They have removed the videos from Youtube... They really didn't show that much.

I walked by there the other day -on my 'power walk', doncha know- and saw an 8.5x11" laserjet stock sheet of paper marked-up with a Sharpie, thusly: "Thanks for your patience -- opening soon!"

Well, soon is this Friday: http://www.twincities.com/restaurants/ci_25469636

P.S. After (five?) years of co-packaging with the likes of Brau Brothers and Cold Spring, the Bank Brewing Company
now has its very own brewery and taproom in Hendricks.

Good for Bank. I haven't had their beer yet, but I like seeing those out-state taprooms. I'll update my list thusly.

Another homebrewer trying to go pro. Are any of you surprised that most of these new breweries have no professional brewing experience. What other industry would allow such lack of experience?

I do find that odd. I hope it works for them, but I always just imagine if I won the lottery and started up a brewery, I'd do two things. I'd go to school to learn how to brew and I'd hire a brewer that has been doing it for atleast some period of time.

Exactly we homebrew but most wouldn't hire ourselves. I cook as well maybe I can be a head chef at a new restaurant.

As with the Bank Brewing update, it's worth noting the growth of a couple of newer Minnesota breweries:

Castle Danger -- new facility and equipment being staged.
Excelsior Brewing: Breaking on through with a Wall Party this Saturday.

That guy loves his Fuggles! Seems that he's set on 'em for the most part. Maybe if he expands (especially as a destination-worthy place) he will eventually come to see the utility of different hops as a draw unto themselves. ;)

Flat Earth is opening their new brewery today...

    "Tuesday - April 22, Flat
We will be opening our doors at 12:34 PM for a soft opening of our 688 Minnehaha location. Please keep in mind this is not our Grand Opening, as there are many things left to do, but we really want to bring you in to see all of the amazing things we have done to this once abandon location. We will be open until at least 8 PM, so bring down your empty growlers and your thirst to help us crisan the new location. And if you would like, the Food Shelf could use a donation. See you tomorrow!"

You beat me to it. I wonder if this is one of the handful of Shakopee breweries that were already on the slate, just unnamed. Or, is this an extra.

Personally, I'd like to see Bad Weather move out to Eden Prairie or Bloomington, but that's just because I loved their Ominous and Schoko Weizen.

  29. First off congrats to both breweries.

IMO, new or newer breweries neeed to improve their day to day beers before they even think about brewing barrel aged beers or sours.

Anyone know of any plans for a brewery or even a really good craft beer bar in the Maple Grove area? I feel like it's a bit of a wasteland out here, granted Surly is only a 10 minute drive for the time being.

The way that area is growing it would make sense.

3 Squares Restaurant is probably your best option for craft beer (in case you weren't aware), Granite City a distant second as far as a brewpub option.

For city that seems to thrive of chain restaurants and planned neighborhoods that didn't even exist 10 years ago, I'm not sure I'd hold my breath yet on seeing a brewery setting up shop in Maple Grove when most of the commercial/light industrial locations would probably be strip malls or Arbor Lakes. Eden Prairie seems to have similar issues too, Hop's Brew Pub was either ahead of its time or (likely) just not as good enough for suburban tastes. Then again, I'm sure local ordinances may come into play too.

Now I could see Osseo being home to someone, especially if they could set up shop right on the main drag.

I agree with all of this. Another reason a brewery wouldn't open up in Maple Grove is because it is very expensive to rent the space in maple grove. From what I hear one guys owns most of the malls and his rates are very high.

A certain brewer that posts in this forum might take exception to that statement. Believe me the beers were plenty good enough.

No offense was meant to be given. I hope the beers were good, I know they won an award at the first ever Winterfest. I never personally had a chance to go and try any of them. I only knew of the place by their sign that could be seen on the bend on 494. They closed not long after I moved to the cities and years before I ever took up an interest in tasting unique beers.

The suburban tastes comment comes from watching other non-chain or unique places come in to EP and open strong but fizzle out fairly quick (Prairie Ale House anyone?). Unless a place caters to families with young kids, affluent couples who can leave kids with the help or on their own, or divorcee cougars looking to pick up a cub for the night, there's not much else to choose from. Being in the area, I'd love to be proven wrong and hoping Tavern 4 & 5 and Prairie Tap House is the start of it but I'd hate to see a start up brewer put into a bunch of hard work and effort into something that already has enough high hurdles built into the area. Maybe things will change if they ever get that SW Light Rail fiasco figured out...
  37. The NW suburbs could really use a brewery. Osseo would be fantastic as I am a frequent visitor of Dick's Bar & Grill. And I think there are a couple of buildings for sale right on Main St. and have thought that would be a cool spot for a taproom.

3 Squares in MG is always good.

Ha, I actually spent my 21st birthday drinking at Hops in 2002, and I wasn't even into craft beer too much back then.

I go to 3 Squares quite a bit, but lately I've grown tired of their tap list. I wish they would change it up a bit and definitely try to get a sour on occasion.

I've only been to Tavern 4 & 5 once on a Saturday afternoon, and it really wasn't that good. I wasn't overly impressed by the beer list (I don't think I'm unreasonable), though it is better than a place that mostly serves BMC, but the servers didn't seem to know what was on tap or anything about beer, and two of what we asked for that were supposed to be regular taps were either blown or just not on (Farm Girl and something else).

The food wasn't worth going back for, so even that isn't enough to keep the place as a viable option (for me and my wife). I spoke with a couple of other people at my work who have been there and they weren't impressed either. Overall, just not a positive experience.

Prairie Tap House was decent. Good beer list, solid food. Basically Lyndale Tap House in Eden Prairie (obviously). From all accounts, they've solved the service issues that they struggled with when they first opened. Was there last night with a very large group from work, no issues with service.
