These are "new" batches of Funk Metal and Das Wunderkind. The base beer for Das Wunderkind was brewed in early November and blended with old, sour beer on 11/30/12. The Funk Metal is our second blending of old barrels of soured Black Metal with some barrel fermented 100% brett beer. We've been putting away Black Metal for barrel aging pretty consistently now (about every three months) for the last year, so we had enough mature barrel-aged beer to do a second blending of Funk Metal.

I realize that the multiple blends we're doing and increased frequency with which we have mature sour beer ready for blending is difficult to follow. In order to fix this, we've started putting batch codes and bottling dates on our labels as of this week. I'll blog about more of the details of this next week.

Drinking RU-55 now...damn it's nice having a cold one ready at my go-to store.

Love this style and this beer. Coming on the heels of some acidic tart bombs this past weekend it's nice have the depth of a Flanders.

The last Jester King that John recieved at HEB was Bonnie (several months ago). For some reason they just quit shipping him Jester King. He told me that he is tired of getting screwed by the distributor and might consider dropping all Jester King beers till they start sending him the limited releases again.

Is RU tart and sour or is there some funk in it as well?

  8. yes my favorite one so far. not straight up acid tho, very complex and flavorful. it may change your mind about sours.

Agreed with RonBurgundy69 (Really? 69 at the end? I feel like a douche typing that). RU55 is a fantastic flanders red, tart (think lemons) yet there is a nice barrel characteristic that comes through. Great beer. Not funky like brett finished beer (no barnyard or horseblanket type flavors to me).

Thanks Jeff, I thought it was newer. You mentioned trying to make it year round before.

In response to the others about RU. I definitely do not get as much chemical finish on this in at all. Much better. Nice front with some tartness and a lot of cherry, but the finish just dissipates to nothing. Definitely see promise in this one. Due to the lower chemical finish, I would have to put it right up there as my favorite sour from jester king. No bretty funk here. Did we get an answer about the name? Anything to do with the morning after pill? Lol

Maybe I'm off, but if your talking about the ru-55 name, it's tribute they're brewing friend Russ

You dont say? ;) Speaking for myself, the "69" is the year of my birth, but I could see how others might take it another way...

Does anyone know exactly how limited RU-55 is going to be? Looking to score a bottle of this and will be putting a ISO:FT post up but I thought I'd ask.

I did a research paper on RU486 long before it was legal to have a day after pill. That was in 1994 or 1995. lol

That was when we lost our area rep...yea it probably shouldn't be incumbent on HEB to create a new relationship with her I bet it's just a miscommunication that would be solved with a phone call. I know few distributors in DFW silly enough to ignore an HEB, even one in Burleson, given the expected growth in our market in the next 2-3 years (READ:Don't bite the hand that feeds you)

I just picked up my two bottles of RU-55 from D&Q. I also got some more Funk Metal although I only saw one case and it was going fast. I might be wrong but I'm guessing it's not from the new batch because it didn't have the new bottle caps.
