Anyone know if the cafe will be open on February 14th?

I'll be in Europe around my birthday (2/14) and was planning on swinging by. I understand the Abby is closed but I was wondering if anyone knew if the Cafe would be open as I know it's a Belgian national holiday.

I tried emailing them but I haven't heard back.

    Thanks!

    Ben

As far as I know Valentines Day is not an acknowledged holiday over here. It's also a Thursday, so should be open.
  3. The abbey is not as 'closed' as one might think. Read this:

You can actually go inside the abbey and see the monks in pray in the chapel. You don't have to pray with them but it is very special to see how this goes. You can walk trough the abbey to the chapel and after that you can walk back.

The best time to go there is the 'sext' at 12.15 and the 'noon' at 14.15 hours.

What you must do is go to the entrance about ten minutes before the prayers start. This is the entrance:

Just ring the bell there and tell the monk who opens the door you want to go to the prayers. They will ask you to put out all cellphones. It is not allowed to make film or photo's.

It is not possible to visit the brewery but here are the pictures i made when i was invited there:

From october 2012 on you can buy sixpacks of Westvleteren 12 at the abby itself. At the beerpickuppoint you can buy two sixpacks of the 12 for 20 euro each or two sixpacks with two small chalices for 24,50 euro each.

Their website lists the days that In de Vrede cafe is open (though they seem slow to update the years):

Ah - rereading their hours it seems they are closed on Thursdays during the winter through July so it's a moot point.

I guess I'll try to go another day.

Thanks for the tips about picking up a 6 pack - when I was there 1.5 years ago they weren't doing that :(. I can just show up at the beer pickup in my rental without a reservation and get 2 6 packs?

  7. Well, i do hope so for you! It is as longs as they have enough sixpacks. Per person you can buy two sixpacks at the abbey and at Cafe in de Vrede. Realise that this is not very sure! You will see it when you are there!
