New Brewer at Blue Lobster Brewing Company

  1. Per their FaceBook:

"Roberta and I would like to introduce Ian Browne as our new brewer at Blue Lobster Brewing Company. Ian come to us from Maine, and a recent graduate from the Master Brewers Program at UC-Davis. He has a wealth of knowledge in Brewing and Business, and is a welcome addition to the Blue Lobster Team"

    No word on Dave yet?
  2. Long time lurker, first time poster. I felt the need to register to post here because Blue Lobster is already taking a beating on Facebook for this move.

I know first hand that BL has had some amazing opportunities that they've had to pass on because their former head brewer can't get his act together. He's a talented brewer indeed, but if you can't successfully operate a commercial brewery, than maybe you should stick to home brewing beer (albeit great beer).
  3. Dave's posting on Facebook, but keeping his cards (wisely) close to his chest as to his next move. I wish him all the best wherever he ends up!

This is a sad, sad day. Blue Lobster is/was my favorite new brewery.

I'm just hoping they don't pull out of the VT Brewers Festival with a week to go.... again..

  6. They just got rid of the reason they had to last year....
  7. It's pretty obvious and really sad what you're doing here, Owner of Blue Lobster. You guys couldn't manage your way out of a paper bag, and Dave is 99% +1 of all your success.

Can't wait to see what Dave cooks up. Maybe you guys can go back to having lingerie nights again.

Dave is a talented brewer--one of the best I've seen in years. Too bad, but he'll make some other brewery quite successful.

AFIAK, Ian never worked at Bull Jagger - he's a fresh UC Davis grad and if I'm not mistaken this is his first industry job.

  12. Class move, creating a BA account to trash your former employee. I could picture owners of all the successful craft breweries doing the same thing. Oh wait, no I couldn't. You'll be out of business in 3 years.
  13. I have confused the Ians. Apparently they hired two. One whom David was training as an assistant previously worked at Bull Jagger. The other one (new head brewer Ian Browne) is indeed a recent UC Davis Grad. My bad. Still, they needed two Ians to replace one Sakolsky...

  14. Hm. Interesting. Are you sure it wasn't because you didn't want to run out of beer even though you had 12bbl of beer in cold storage?
  15. Especially when David hasn't said a single negative word about this whole thing. Not very classy.
  16. If so, he is also the guy who commented on my FB post awhile back that Blue Lobster and Hill Farmstead shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence - even though there's a shared legacy there. Not a good omen...or good PR for that matter.

It would be nice to know what happened
He's quietly being negative about it. Liking posts on Facebook that's anti-BL and even in the thread http://beeradvocate.com/community/t...rewing-experiences.100185/page-4#post-2063779 recommending that people keep being critical. I don't know what happened but its kind of sad how this is all playing out as publicly as it has been.
  18. At least his name is on those likes. Creating a BA account just to libel a former employee is low.
  19. He posted "keep being critical" meaning critical of craft beers, the industry, the good beer, the bad beer, as in "know your beer". You know, the whole thing this website is based on? I dunno about quietly being negative, is there such a thing? I mean the dude just got fired this morning. Doesn't he have the right to be upset? Yet he hasn't posted anything negative about the brewery, the brewer or the owner. If he's liking people's posts who are supporting him in this whole ugly mess, I don't see that as negative especially when the owner's on here talking $hit about the guy who built his business for him. I know what went down first hand and you don't know me from a hole in the wall but when I tell you that Dave's been getting jerked around for over a year, believe it. Or not. Whatever.

Could've misread that post but that's how I took it when I read it. It made sense to take it that way after seeing him like a lot of the negative posts being thrown at BL. I don't doubt that he got jerked around because like I said before, I don't know what happened. My commentary isn't to take sides, just saying its sad to see it being played out that way. Previous poster is right though, at least he didn't create an account to bash the guy.

  21. Hands down a massive loss to Blue Lobster. Luckily I know Dave has a very bright future but I will let him tell you about that when the time is right :)

I hope everyone is ready for some Irish Reds and Kolschs. Not a chance that a DIPA out of BL from now on will be ANYTHING like what Dave produced, not to mention one of the best base(fruit-ready)-berliners in the game in my opinion. You know the place doesn't have a future when one of the owners favorite beers is sea dog blueberry and doesn't know how to properly use an ellipsis.
  22. Guesss I'll have to make my case of Piscataquaweiss and my few bottles of Celtic last.

  23. That is some lousy news, but I hope it works out for David in the end. And for my sake, I hope he stays in New Hampshire--the beer he was brewing is unique in the state, and really pushed (and satisfied) a lot of palates in the area. I'll certainly miss being able to get my fix for crisp, hoppy beers on my way to Portsmouth, but I hope we'll see David opening his own brewery somewhere else in southern New Hampshire. No matter what he does though, I wish him all the best--not that he'll need it with the skills he has.
  24. I can't wait to slap a sticker of wherever David ends up next on my Blue Lobster growler.
  25. Why wouldn't you want people have a critical viewpoint?

If a beer is good - applaud it, if its bad - say something - the brewer wants feedback, so does the brewery owner.
  26. Well if I'm not mistaken, THIS particular brewery owner just wants more profits.

  29. registered today, no history, admits to having 'first hand knowledge' and is the only one remotely defending BL. Also, mentioned that BL was taking a beating on FB, and that's why he needed to set it straight.

It's not a lock that it's him, but it's him. We've seen this song and dance from brewery owners before. It usually ends badly.

Lot's of venom in this thread. Just curious as I have zero knowledge of this, what makes BL so horrible with "retarded business practices" and what makes this former brewer so great? And what business opportunities had to be passed up?

  31. This former brewer put out some awesome beers. That's as much as I know or care to know. If the product drops off I'll stop buying beer there and I'll have 2 growlers I'll have to find other uses for. That's about as much as it affects anyone here, but that won't stop people from taking things to heart. I just won't be one of them.

That's sorta the impression I was getting. Seemed like beer nerd wrath (oh god I'm probably setting myself up for some)
  33. Eh, not really. It's a really one-sided argument, though. I think most of us are more irked at the gall of BL to act like this was anything but their fault.

But they'll soon have their wish and be pumping out stuff like 'Seacoast Stout', 'Blue(Berry) Lobster Ale', and 'Irish Red Lobstah Ale'.

Looks like you hit the nail on the head. I'm glad everyone knows with such certainty what went down and what the future holds.

Frankly I loved Dave's beers as Blue Lobster. I certainly hope he lands somewhere and can continue his craft, and that Blue Lobster's new brewer lives up to what the brand has produced thus far. The only thing better than one local brewery putting out great beer is two local breweries putting out great beer.

That's probably why their growlers and fb say:

"Michael and Roberta have been crafting beer for 30 years (okay, so Michael crafts it, but Roberta helps design and drink it). After many years of wandering the country in exotic places like Texas, California, and for the last 12 years Oregon, they are looking forward to bringing their unique, locally-inspired brews to New Hampshire. Blue Lobster will feature small batch specialty brews, as well as more traditional beers - all served in our own tasting room AT the brewery."
  38. Making Dave look just as petty and foolish as the owner was looking before his "friends" came to start white knighting. Friends keep their mouths shut when it benefits the situation. If the place was as bad as all the "friends" are making it out to be then there is nothing and no one to stick up for....he is better off.

I only ever speak to what I know. The "friends" argument is a weak excuse to get upset and say whatever you want about whoever you want.
