New Import Sightings

Discussion in 'Australia & New Zealand' started by heygeebee, Jul 31, 2012.

  1. Folks,

Wanted to start a discussion about any new import sightings.

    • Hook Norton (UK) - seen in Danno's - seem to be brought in direct like Ballast Point, the good thing on this one if the price - hitting the $5 mark for a 500ml makes some of Danno's other shelf pollution in terms of the Pommie offerings seem out of place.
    • Heretic Shallow Grave (US) - seen in Jim's Waitara. Don't know any more apart from the fact that Jim's has an e-x-t-e-n-s-i-v-e range of Sierra Nevada (well, for the North Shore suburbs anyhow) and I guess this is bought in by same import mob - have not seen elsewhere.

Any other recent odd import sightings that have not been aired recently?

    Cheers

Heretic started coming over 3 months ago, and should be available at the usual good places.

  3. wow! - seriously all quiet on the beaches......

Any news on how much Thornbridge will be coming - ie what beers?

I thought Thornbridge had been availabel fro abotu a month,

$15 seems a bit steep. But then again, they certainly aren't the cheapest English beers going around.

There is a lot coming through in the next 2-3 months. And when I say a lot, I mean like... way, way, way, way too much.

  6. Inveralmond also seen recently in Vintage Cellars - three beers - but cannot recall the exact ones, except Lia Fail springs to mind.

Lia Fail, Blackfriar and Ossian have been on the shelves at First Choice Liquor in Jandakot for a while now. The Blackfriar in particular is nice.

Just heard Fullers Brewers Reserve #4, 2012 Vintage Ale & the new Past Masters Old Burton Extra aren't on the next Fullers shipment out here. Hopefully they make the first shipment of 2013.

The imports lost their one and only beer guy, so not surprised of things like that being missing.

Interested in the thoughts of the Victorians who went along to the "First Time ever in Australia" for BridgePort

Not surprised about that. The brewery itself are easy to deal with. Not so the import company.

  13. does anyone know anything re whether we will get the re-brew of I Hardcore You here? - the Brewdog/Mikkeller collab. It was re-released a few months back but I have not seen it n recent Brewdog shipments... available at STG2.99 online from Brewdog at the time, so not xxxx-y pricewise.

The 2012 batch landed already (and is all gone in my neck of the woods).

  15. wow - never even saw it on any web sites in any state - saw a lot of other Brewdog stuff brewed at roughly the same time, but not that one....

  16. MrKennedy

    MrKennedy Advocate (610) Australia Dec 29, 2006

Not on the websites of Leura or Slowbeer. Warners at the Bay lists it, but not sure which batch. And the price for it is a bit more than 3 quid ;-)

  17. ah-hem, $31 for the BB 2011 batch at Warners:eek: ..... (so I guess brewed in 2010?? ) one of my mates stumped up the cash for it and notes still drinking well...

    MrKennedy Advocate (610) Australia Dec 29, 2006

Man, he must like taking a punt...$31 for a 330ml IPA that's a couple of years old from the other side of the world is not the kinda odds i like. Hope Warners kept it in the fridge!

  19. dgilks

    dgilks Advocate (685) Australia Jul 14, 2008

$31!!! I could get it landed (by air freight) and pay duty and GST on it (if assessed) and it would only cost $10.35 for a bottle. Add $11 to ship up to 5 bottles anywhere in the country and we are still well under $31. The other price shocker is the Abstrakt range which I can land here for $18 but shops are charging $36.

Note that I pay UK retail less 20% (which is a standard case discount rate anyway) so it's not like I'm buying it at wholesale prices.

We had it online for $12 for about 2 weeks. (or four for 40, I think). It didn't last long at all.

I wouldn't bother with I Hardcore You Now. David got me a bottle soon after release which was lovely (as attested to in my review), but if you're going to pay a premium for a 4-month old bottle I wouldn't bother.

  22. dgilks

    dgilks Advocate (685) Australia Jul 14, 2008

And that is a reasonable price.

The issue of the $31 IHU exists because stores don't understand basic economics. Despite the fact that they paid high, old prices and want to charge $31, the new wholesale price only demands a price of $12. They should be charging $12 and not $31 as that is the new market price for the product.

    Lukie Savant (425) Australia Jun 16, 2007

Plus it was an older batch. We did that with the older priced Mikkeller, cut all the margins to reflect the new importer (that was a little while back).

  24. Can I ask what volume of bottles you buy to get those prices? I have seen the Brewdog site and been tempted but the STG 60 for freight is a worry.... do you fill a box each time?

  25. see Leura Cellars have three Bridgeports in now.... IPA, Hop Czar and Kingpin..... review scores on here don't look too great tho :(

  26. dgilks

    dgilks Advocate (685) Australia Jul 14, 2008

Always fill a box split between 4 of us. The 60 quid is a killer but it can be made to work if you get a few friends together.

    Lukie Savant (425) Australia Jun 16, 2007

All available nationwide. They are good, not great. Far better stuff (GF, BR, SN). I enjoyed them though. IPA was probably the stand out.

Also, 60 quid for freight is cccccccchhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaapppppppppppppppppppp. Don't order from Belgium.

Also, BOM Brewery is coming over from Belgium. Available in 3 weeks, this guy does his own floor malting (only brewery in Belgium to do so), and had his start working at every amazing Belgian brewery you can possibly name.

    So that's cool, too.

Yeah. Should be here in 2/3 weeks. There is less then last year available, but I have enough allocation hopefully to last a couple of weeks.

    Lukie Savant (425) Australia Jun 16, 2007

Yeah, they are fairly standard. I don't think they are something that are going to be staying in the shop with the plethora of new stuff coming in next year.

Probably a few days before the official announcement, but I like stirring up interest in things. Garage Project. Yay and stuff.

    Keg only I assume?

  36. Lukie

    Lukie Savant (425) Australia Jun 16, 2007

Nope. They have built their new brewery. There is a lot of different beers coming. All 750ml bottles + limited kegs. There will likely be a list next week. Some of their stuff sounds incredible.

  37. hmmmm - unless they follow the example of Moa, who are quite reasonably priced, I hate to think how unaffordable 750ml bottles will be from EnZed....

None of the 750mL offerings from Moa I've seen fall into that category.

While on the topic of Moa, I won't be buying them again after seeing their recent shenanigans. This is worth a read if you're interested:

You can't really compare Moa to one of the most interesting breweries in New Zealand.
