I figured I'd get the thread started. Anyone with good pictures or an interesting trip report please feel free to update this thread. Here's my account:

It was my first time there, so I walked around as much as possible, stopping in a lot of tents but only buying two beers, a Spaten, which I thought was very good, and a Hacker-Pschorr. First I stopped in at the Schottenhamer tent:

The Spaten seemed very sweet, but it was delicious.

Later I walked around in the pouring rain...

    Stopping for a little lunch...

And then into Hacker-Pschorr's tent for one...

Bonus photo just because I liked how it turned out...

It was a little early for the tents to be super-festive, but it was fun nevertheless. I'm glad I went early.

All in all a good time. Looking forward to what you all have to share!

Where's that thread about the beer pourers making sure not to skimp... :grinning:

OK, so you be the judge. I only had one, when it came fresh to my table you can see where the head is. However given some time, check this pic (sincerest apologies to the strange ladies who did not know their pictures would be put up here...). Mine beer is in the middle, same beer as in the previous photo. Looks like it's to the line, yes?

Note: I may delete the picture after a certain amount of time, so if you can't see it, that's why.

Using the head foam is 1/3 beer rule of thumb, visualy divide the foam into thirds, and you can see that it will settle to the liter line.

I always remember the glasses being filled to the line with beer, though. What do others think is correct?

The line used to be standard. On my last visit I noticed shorter pours at several different places. That's par for the course here in the US (along with those shaker pints with the massive glass bottoms), but I found it disappointing for Bavaria.

So my original post was good for some photos but wasn't much of a trip report. Here are some highlights:

    - A man standing on a table attempting to chug a beer, egged on by (presumably) his friends all yelling "Go! Go! Go!". Security quickly got him down off the table and whisked him away, whereupon most of the tent booed the poor security guy. Chugging a liter of 6% beer doesn't seem like a good idea to me, either, security guy.
    - Meeting Bierman9 and Alewife at Feinkost Drexler on my way off the grounds. They seem like genuinely nice people.
    - Talking with the proprietors of Feinkost Drexler, who also seem like genuinely nice people, although they seem to disagree on whether or not Uli Hoeness' recent tax controversy should be the public's business. If you ever want to practice your German with a native, bring up Fußball. I can recommend Drexler's Leberkäse and their pretzels, which made for a cheap(-ish) alternative for lunch.
    - The women (pictured above for the time being) talking to me for a few minutes and then asking to the waiter (who appeared to be a friend of theirs) if there was somewhere better to go because they were bored. I think they went to Augustiner. Still don't got it.
    - Going back for a photo of the playground I mentioned in my 24 Hours in Munich thread, just outside the Wies'n.

I have been at a German fest or two where the guy is standing on the table and chugging a beer, as his friends lift the table as high as they can, above their heads. I always thought this was potentially quite dangerous ( for the beer chugger ). But none of them were ever kicked out.

I'd guess this behavior would never be tolerated in the USA. Just like the Devil's wheel or that sanding belt ride I skinned the hell out of my knees on would be frowned upon. Too many lawsuits just waiting to be filed!!!!

And sorry to be off topic, but I haven't figured out how to post fotos here. Which may be a good thing for you guys. But if someone can explain it to me that would be great. Shoot me a message, or post it here. I've got quite a bit to share. Prost!

Look for the icon that looks (to me anyway) like a tree - the "Insert/Edit Image" button. Click on that and it will ask you for a link. You need to post the link to the picture itself and not, for example, to the website where the image is (if that makes sense). I use Photobucket. That site lets you copy a "direct link" of the image and post it into the dialogue box that pops up when you click the Insert/Edit Image button. I hope any of this makes sense.

I always suggest to Americans to check out the Teufelsrad. It's typical Munich, it's great comedy, you can stay as long as you want and you get to see something that would require multiple waivers and have lawyers camped outside if it took place in the US.

Actually, we were hoping to get you off-site, for dinner.... You would have gone well with some fava beans, and a nice chianti...

True story, I told my wife about the meet-up plans and she told me not to get hacked to bits by some stranger I met on the internet. I told her that the chances of that happening were like 85% against.

Unless said stranger's avatar showed him wielding a .30 Cal. M-1 Garand... :grinning:

That is a good point and something I hadn't thought about until you mentioned it now. Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

He would have been escorted out for standing on the table which is forbidden if I remember correctly (chairs ok). The chugging would have had nothing to do with it

Perhaps so. I saw a lot of people standing on what appeared to be the tables themselves, but after a closer look at my photos it is unclear if it was tables or benches/chairs. They didn't seem to do anything about people standing on [whichever] but they moved pretty quick on this guy for whatever reason.
