Omission Launches Gluten-free IPA

    PORTLAND, OR (April 2013) – Omission Brewing Company today announced it is adding Omission India Pale Ale (Omission IPA) to its gluten-free beer lineup in Oregon. Omission Brewing is the first craft beer brand in the United States focused exclusively on brewing great-tasting craft beers with traditional beer ingredients, including malted barley, specially crafted to be gluten-free. Omission IPA hits shelves in Oregon on April 1.

    “Omission IPA is the first authentic gluten-free IPA brewed with malted barley to hit the market,” said Joe Casey, Widmer Brothers Brewmaster. “This IPA is brewed in the traditional Northwest IPA style, yet is specially crafted to be gluten-free. The beer uses a generous amount of Summit and Cascade hops giving it a beautiful citrus flavor and aroma.”

    Omission beers are brewed by Widmer Brothers Brewing in Portland, Ore., using an innovative brewing program to ensure that gluten levels in every batch measure well below the widely accepted CODEX gluten-free standard of 20 parts per million (ppm) for food and beverages. Every batch of Omission beer is tested by the brewery and by an independent lab, and all test results are available to consumers at www.omissiontests.com.     Gluten-free Omission IPA:
    Omission IPA is a bright, hop forward Northwest Style IPA produced in the spirit of the original IPAs shipped from the UK to India in the late 1800s. The heavy-handed use of Cascade and Summit hops give it notable pine, citrus, and grapefruit aromas and flavors. The bitterness is what you would expect of a NW IPA but this beer is balanced and smooth due to the perfect level of malt sweetness. The finish is crisp, clean, and refreshing – it’s a true IPA lover’s IPA.

  2. Awesome! Its exciting to see more gluten free (or low gluten) beers that actually taste good. I know a few people who'll be psyched for this.

    Not the Omission beers. They are brewed in a process identical to a typical beer, but an enzyme is added that breaks down the gluten protein. Result is a clear beer that tastes identical to how it would without the enzyme added. I've brewed batches and split them, half with the enzyme (marketed as Clarity Ferm) and half without. Taste and mouthfeel is indistinguishable.

    My brother is a Celiac and id really like to try and get him into craft beer.

    At this point they can only sell it in Oregon because the FDA doesn't allow products to be labeled as "gluten-free" if they contained glutenous ingredients at some point. I can understand their caution, but it's a shame that people outside the state can't have a GF beer that actually tastes like beer.

    Hmm, their lager and pale ale are available in Michigan. They are careful not to label it "gluten free" on the packaging though.

  11. Pale and Lager are sold outside of Oregon and I've read elsewhere that the IPA will have wider distribution in the summer.

    I don't like how they say gluten free. It's gluten removed. And further, I don't care for them saying they are the first brand, considering they started Omission in 2012 and Harvester Brewing started in 2011. Harvester is a completely gluten free brewery, and not by gluten removal.

    That statement is technically true.

    It's still not gluten free, even if it were at zero PPM. It's gluten removed. Potato, potatoe. Still a spud.

    Like any allergy, it's a matter of tolerance. Some just cannot consume a de-glutenized product. To advertise something is gluten free is misleading and misrepresents that a gluten component has been treated to remove the harmful aspect of that ingredient. For those that are especially sensitive, the ramifications are all to real and can be severe. Call it what it is...a de-glutenized beer!
