Quality beer photos/footage (AKA Beer Porn)

Discussion in 'Beer Talk' started by 4kbrianb, Jan 22, 2013.

  1. I love checking out the pictures of the latest hauls and peoples cellars, but I have become interested in why there aren't more quality shots. Some of them are really nice, and planned out... you can definitely tell. I come from a back ground of cinematographers and photographers so I am definitely used to looking at shots created by people who are borderline psychotic. With the number of people on these forums there have got to be a few of you with a 5d or a higher level camera right? Hell, even a go-pro strapped to your hat during a festival!

My point being.... Have any of you ever pieced together anything from your adventures either to get beer, find beer, try new beer? I know some of you have driven cross country for a damn pliny the younger, you must've documented it right?

    Any camera nerds out there?

Can't speak for everyone, but I too enjoy the what are ya drinkin' and haul threads showing pictures of beer I can only think about trying (for now). But I think most folks are just positing a quick picture for the forum versus taking time to create the beauty shot. And really, some of those pictures are quite good. Believe it is all about the sharing the fun rather than worrying about the quality of the pictures.

But I bet there's some people with some very nice photos or videos, so hopefully they chime in.

Most use smartphones as its easier to upload. Plus if your buzzed and taking pics, they all look great.

I shoot portraits and such from time to time for extra cash, so I have the equipment to do so.

Shooting my beer, however is shot, uploaded, and posted from my phone. Im not going to go through putting it on my computer and all when my passion at the moment is that beer I just poured.

  8. I hear what you guys are saying. The photos I have uploaded have all been from my iphone as well. But i know there are people out there who are bored after a few drinks on a Saturday, and they organize their cellar for a good shot. Or who go on a road trip with a camera to track down some rare beers. I dont think every shot needs to be perfectly staged and amazing, because that is no fun! Like you said, half the fun is the excitement and sharing it asap!

When I go up to Vermont for a weekend at some point this year I will be bringing my Sony NEX camera and will be taking some great shots of HF and The Alchemist brewery. I plan on bringing my camera to every brewery tour that I go to but I usually forget because I'm so focused on drinking. But seeing that I plan on having all the art in my house made by me, it's only natural that I'll take some awesome pictures of breweries and beers.

  10. That's what I'm talkin about! that will be awesome. And i agree... having the art in your home be yours, is a very rad feeling. It is also cool when people come over and they compliment it. be sure to share after you go on those trips. A friend of mine used to put together little shorts on every trip, a la the show "three sheets", and it was pretty cool to look back and reflect.

Absolutely, especially since there are so many breweries in New England. The next time I go to Jack's Abby (In the next 2 weeks or so) I'm bringing my camera to get some good pictures. Same thing for Sam Adams, which I just visited on Friday and forget to bring my camera.

Some thought I was a little crazy for spending 600 bucks on a camera but if I have at least 5-10 pieces of original framed photos then it paid for itself.

  12. Some people also probably think you are crazy for spending 20 bucks on a bottle of beer right? A hobby or a love is exactly that... so I say enjoy it! Nothing wrong with knocking both out at once... drinking great beers while snapping amazing photos sounds like a little slice of heaven.

Are you going to do color of BW? Depending on where you are putting them and the mood you are going for I suggest B&W. I had a couple shots of some big stainless tanks and barrels from a winery that I turned B&W and got some prints made... pretty epic if you ask me. Adds some drama to it.

I have the gear but typically the beers i try that i would want to photograph are either at a tasting or a brewery/beer bar and none of those are ideal. Drinking doesnt really mix well with expensive camera gear for the most part.

Yes, you pretty much answered the question. I'd probably make a decision as to color or BW when I upload them to my computer. I think that black and whites would be a good look for the tanks and barrels. Also, I have photoshop so I could put some splashes of color along with black and white.

I've played around with many different looks for my pictures. Most of which are landscape shots from New York City and Ogunquit, Maine. However, I'm going to Vegas and Montreal this year and also plan on taking some great pictures there.

I was heavily involved in photography, but literally put my cameras away for long time. I've recently rekindled my passion for photography. The gallery at brewbokah is very nice. And, a very clever domain name too.

Hopefully, I'll start experimenting with beer photography, especially, when I start visiting breweries.

I pretty much shoot digital these days, but I used to LOVE running Tri-X through my cameras, and then spend hours in the darkroom creating prints. The grain and grit of that film would be perfect for shooting at breweries like Hill Farmstead.

  16. i hear ya man, Tri-x was top notch. Luckily, some post software has really improved over the last few years so there are comprable options to add some of that grit. When I work with RED cameras, you can add a nice look using their proprietory software, I love love love the footage it pushes out, plus you can do motion or stills the size of a damn wall if you want.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but have a question. Do most/some/all breweries allow pictures? I know for us (food/bev industry) they are verboten without written permission and appropriate blood sacrifices...just curious.

My thinking is that most of them shouldn't mind. I obviously see where you're going with this and I say this. I'm sure there's a limit on things you can take a picture of. For example I'm sure Jack's Abby would be really mad at me if I went in there and took a picture of their limited release calendar. It's like going to Founders and taking a picture of their Backstage Series 2013 beer info before they announce anything. I personally think that as long as you're not doing any damage to their business then there shouldn't be a problem.

Lastly, I would never just show up to a brewery and snap a ton of pictures without asking first. It's just being courteous. So, basically, I would still bring my camera and I would respect the wishes of the people at the brewery because after all, it is their workplace.

  19. I am expecting this thread to get taken down any minute due to the fact that there was a similar thread a few weeks back that was started twice and nuked both times but hopefully it stays up for a bit. That being said...

Beer and photography are my two favorite things in life and I can spend hours going through quality bottle shots. I like most people on this site will take the quick snapshot if a bottle or a recent haul but have been meaning to take the time and take some proper shots of the cellar. I set up a shot a while back and loved the way it turned out and was planning on doing a series of shots following. Several months later I have yet to set up another one. Looking through the pics on http://www.brewbokeh.com I feel inspired to pick up the camera again. I think I will have to continue that project this week and if this thread is still up at the end of the week will post some new ones. I posted this one before but felt like including it again for the hell of it.

  21. I was pretty bummed when the last few were taken down as well. I understand the Bros not wanting the threads to get off topic but sharing pictures of beer seems pretty on topic to me. I am hoping it stays up and some more people share some quality shots.

Fellow SC alum here (and Cinema minor) so I get what you're going after. It's second nature to want to compose shots, but I've found that I don't really have the resources in my house to get it right. Indoor lighting sucks and it sucks even worse on my camera phone. I have a decent T3i set up, but who wants to go through the downloading to my laptop for a beer of the day photo? I'm looking forward to getting decent photos for my blog come summer when I can use natural lighting again.

  25. it got taken down quickly? I am still learning the ins and outs of what dictates a thread removal. I guess I didn't read the rules close enough. But I hope this follows the Beer discussion guidelines because it is definitely in regards to adventures of beer!

Great shot dude... and a Kings fan. good man!

p.s. if they want it to stay on beer topic.... A very high frame rate motion capture of pouring a beer in to a glass not only looks rad.... but it captures how the carbonation/beer/head behave at that moment which can also tell you quite a bit about that beer! Science, alcohol, photography all rolled in to one! Bill Nye would be proud.

  28. Sone seriously nice shots showing up. Don't get why these threads get deleted.

I'm about fifty-fifty. Will set up some nice shots, but also take crappy ones with my cell phone for Instagram. Will post some later if this thread stays up. Took some b&w film shots of beer related stuff while in Prague, too.
