RIP: "Review" Icon

In an attempt to make BeerAdvocate.com more efficient and faster, I had to make a call to remove the "review" icon that appeared in certain lists; Top Beers, Styles, Breweries. The icon was displayed to the immediate left of the beer name, and it would switch to blue or red based on if you rated it. We understand that it was handy to some, but it had to go.

Why? For each beer listed, we had to do a call to the database to see if you rated the beer. We were doing this for every single logged in user who viewed one of the above lists. We're talking tens of millions of database queries on a daily basis just to toggle an icon. This sort of savings becomes crucial (and noticeable) during peak times and as our site traffic continues to grow.

We'll explore other ways of noting the beers that you've rated when viewing these lists, but in the meantime the benefits far outweigh the small convenience.

RIP, review icon. You served us well for over a decade.
