The problem with such criteria, though, is that the number of breweries or the total state barrelage doesn't give the total picture without know how much of that beer is shipped out of state, just as "Breweries per capita" doesn't give a true picture of a state's "craft beer" market without knowing how beer is sold by out-of-state breweries. For most of the larger breweries, it's a regional or national market. The Top 10 craft brewers easily sell most of the craft beer in the US.

Wyoming has, currently, 25 active breweries, not 22. 2 however haven't started brewing their own yet.

I'm certainly not surprised by Oklahoma's truly horrible placement relative to other states.

It also doesn't consider tourism, which drastically affects beer consumption.

Ever wonder why Nevada is often the number one in per capita beer consumption?

Answer: because every bachelor party that ends up in Las Vegas leads to 20 cases of beer being drunk in a 48 hour period, yet none of these folks are permanent residents. Also, people in Vegas (most whom are tourists or just passing through) tend to drink a ton of beer, then recover back at home.

Also consider New Hampshire, which is consistently ranked as one of the highest in per capita consumption. Yet the reason why is the prices are much more favorable than nearby MA, so lots of folks travel to stock up on beer.

Although not 100% definitive in all of the minutiae of the complicated truth of American beer production and consumption, this is a nice "snapshot".

I think the fact that VT is #1 per capita and is still seeing huge growth is a clue that states like NY are going to see a lot more breweries start up over the next 10 years. My friend runs the oldest brewpub in Albany and he estimates that NY is so far from saturation that you could see the number of them double.

2014 numbers, the BA is a little behind sometimes.

They have MI at 159, but it is 209 today.

Can't y'all read? The study is based on data from the year 2104. This is a FUTURE look at the state of the craft beer world.

NE looks kinda dismal on this map but I think NE breweries are pumping out some of the best beers in the world right now.

Right, like how Pennsylvania is on the low end for # of breweries per capita, but we are #1 in barrelage due to Yuengling and Boston Beer.

I would take Utah's breweries over Arizona's breweries any day.

    Quantity is overrated.

It shows California as having 431 breweries in 2014. I just read an article during the San Jose beer week that there are currently 900+ breweries in CA. Furthermore, they said a new brewery is currently opening every 16 hours in CA. As good as the beer was on that trip, growth like that can't continue.
