ATLANTA (October 1, 2015) – SweetWater Brewing Company announces its first barrel aged release, Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, hitting shelves beginningMonday, October 5. This is the second edition from the brewery’s Cork & Cage series, a high-gravity, small-batch line-up that explores the edges of classic beer styles including barrel-aged beers, sours and wild ales. Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout is a supremely rich, full-bodied imperial stout laced with subtle notes of chocolate and bourbon, acquired while aging in bourbon barrels. A big beer at 11.2%, this is the highest ABV creation SweetWater will release this year.

“The brewery has played with barrel aging for special releases at anniversary parties, tours and craft industry events, but this is the first barrel-aged beer we’ve released for sale,” says Nick Burgoyne, part of the brewing team that created the stout. “This stout is ripe for the cooler weather – it has the burly and warming characteristics of bourbon; I imagine drinking it out of a snifter by the fire. Might even have to buy a proper smoking jacket for this one.”

This dignified gent has a dark side that’s savory, with a velvety mouthfeel, robust dark chocolate and vanilla aroma, and flavors of roasted malt and char. The malt blend is 2 Row, Munich, 70/80, Roasted Barley, Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and Black, with Columbus hops.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout will hit shelves beginning Monday, October 5, and will continue to be distributed throughout the year as new batches are ready. Consumers will be able to first taste the brew on Sunday, October 4, at a release party at the brewery; the first 100 guests will receive a limited edition Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout snifter – and all will enjoy a S’mores bar and watch the Atlanta Falcons game (admission is regular tour and tasting price of $10/person; see more details on SweetWater’s Facebook events page, here). MORE ON THE CORK & CAGE SERIES

As one of the nation’s fastest growing craft breweries, SweetWater Brewing Company continues to evolve and expand their offerings, including the Cork & Cage series of 750-ml innovative brews. True to form, SweetWater is putting their own spin on this high-gravity series, exploring the edges of classic beer styles including barrel-aged beers, sours and wild ales.

SweetWater’s brewers were given the opportunity to take their knowledge and experience to formulate new recipes for the Cork & Cage Series, dabbling in different facets of craft beer.

The result is a lineup of small batch brews that rotate in limited quantities, packaged in a 750-ml bottle with cork and cage finish. SweetWater welcomed its new 750-ml packaging line in January 2015, and broke the seal with a test run on its 18th anniversary Belgian-style triple. The second release, The Pit & The Pendulum, was so well-received, the brewery has added it to its year-round offerings.

And GA lawmakers suck, so they will no longer be "selling" the beer at the brewery.

Yeah, the Pit and Pendulum (which im assuming is the other C&C beer that is referred to) was really expensive. I'd love to see this come in around $13.99 instead of $18.99

I will not buy any of the corked and caged series. Not to high on sweet water. But would buy stock in a potential IPO

A 750ml barrel aged stout? It will probably be closer to $20 than $10. Just a hunch, could be wrong.

some people will buy it...but unless it is a ridiculously good ba stout, it'll sit on shelves.

I wonder what the base is on this beer. I love their RIS and it lends itself to some age (where hops fade).

    As it should.

I had the Happy Ending, and if my memory serves correctly, the a BA Happy Ending. I enjoyed both and would grab this to see how it is. Sweetwater is coming to TX soon, so maybe someday I'll see it.

They don't do an RIS. The Happy Ending, although called an Imperial Stout, is way more akin to a Black IPA. Super hop forward, very bitter, and not near as heavy on the malt bill. This beer is supposedly a brand new beer, barrel aged. Hoping they took a note from the other C&C beers and brewed it true to style. Sweetwater is known for dosing hops in anything they do, even if it doesn't call for it.

    The truth!

I'll let others give this a shot before I buy it. I didn't try the other corked and caged beer since the price point was a bit more than what I wanted to pay.
