With SpeedwayJim’s blessing, some New York and Chicago BAs began this collaboration to generate a new and improved “White Whale” list. It has since expanded to 21 BAs in an attempt to create a list of the biggest whales in the craft beer world.

Much like the top 100 on BA, you will not agree with this list. We do not agree with this list. Rather it is an average of a number of BAs opinions in an attempt to get a feel for what beers are “White Whales” according to BA perception.

The term “White Whale” has become very misused in the BA community. What this list tries to do is to quantify the true whales in the beer world. We hope you enjoy. We hope to make this a yearly thing and update the list around this time next year.

    Without further ado:

I looked at the list...... only one I've had was #100

Certainly not the only one I care to try, but there are many I don't have the desire to try.

Good list though.... certainly all "unobtainable" to me!

I've had 63 of the top 100. Some deserve to be in the top 100 (or even top 10) beers of all time on taste. Others are not even remotely close. With that said, it was still quite fun to put together.

Vertical Epic 02.02.02 - 10 year old Witbier. Whales aren't only whales by taste or how well they hold up.

That said, I had Southampton Berliner Weiss fairly recently. Very nice.

This. I personally had 02.02.02 at the very bottom as I don't think anyone will want it now that the series is over. Southampton Berliner, on the other hand, is an amazing beer and, judging by recent reviews, holding up incredibly well.

I trust nearly all of the people on that committee (I don't know a few, and I don't trust Frank because he doesn't know his French-Asian porn stars). Fairly accurate list from a group of actual whale drinkers/hunters. Thanks to all of you for getting drunk and putting that together.

All of these beers are from when Terry was the brewer there, but good to hear things are still well there. I used to go up and get two kegs at a time way back when. Aside from the rare wilds, Terry made some fantastic stouts and hoppy brews.

I agree with you on P3. I ranked it much higher but only due to personal experience on trying to land it. Even with such an experienced committee, there was huge variation with the middle portion of the list. But it is to be expected.

It's an attempt to quantify the desirability of beers a portion of traders are interested in. The most sought after. I found the results interesting. I'm not sure there's a practical use for the list, if that's what you mean.

It's just for fun, obviously, but I think particularly newer users can learn about some older, more obscure bottles this way. Also perceptions can vary a lot over the years and it's not a bad idea to document these things.

This was one of the interesting things that i think came out of it. People were pretty consistent near the top of the list, but toward the middle, rarity met desirability. Most beers toward the middle were rated highly by some who saw it as hard to land, and low by many people who didn't see that as an attractive whale. The deviations at this point were significant. Makes sense...many of the beers in the middle are hard to land but not sought after by everyone. So ones that ended up a bit higher in the middle were just sought after by a few more people.
