Trip to IA: Toppling Goliath

Discussion in 'US - Midwest' started by mjchapley, Mar 12, 2013.

  1. Hi All,

I am going to be heading down the Waterloo, IA for work on Friday and driving back later on that day. Is Toppling Goliath worth stopping at on the way back? Based on everything I read, yes.

Any suggestions on growlers I should bring back?

Toppling Goliath is worth the trip, sample a few beers while you are there and grab a Growler of whatever you like the most. You can't go wrong with psudoSue.

The people there are very nice too, stop in and chat awhile if you have time.

In a word, yes. In another, more descriptive word, IFYOUAREANYWHEREINTHEVICINITYOFDECORAHIOWAANDYOUDONOTSTOPATTOPPLINGGOLIATHYOUAREANIDIOT!!! They are wonderful. Get a flight or two - the only trouble will be deciding which growler(s) to bring back!

  4. !00% yes as far as growlers Psuedo Sue and golden nugget those are the 2 that i have had both great
  5. Well sounds like I would be pretty dumb if I don't stop in there so looks like I will have something to look forward to on the ride home.

If you are going anywhere near Decorah on your way, yes, you'd be dumb not to stop. Sue is a must. Golden Nugget is as well. Hell, try everything you can.

Sorry to say that we may be out of pseudoSue in our taproom brewery, however, we should have Pompeii (Mosaic IPA) to take it's place as we wait patiently for the nest batch of Sue. We also have some small batch, dark ale and RIS that is worth the trip for. You can not get the SR-71 bbstout anywhere yet, and Assassins Shadow is a fun dark ale made with the final running of our Assassin 2014, which went into Pappy VW barrels.

But the best part about stopping is you! Give us your honest opinions, we listen.

    Travel safe and Cheers!

It is worth a stop x1000! If you want to get any swag like a t-shirt, good luck. I buy a t-shirt and pint glass from every brewery I visit and I've struck out every single time there on the shirts.....though I almost pulled the trigger on a medium once, it was a bit tight on my massive beer lifting arms....;)

No self-respecting beer drinker can wear a medium shirt, unless they are under 4 feet tall.

So are you a filthy, drug-peddling midget? Or are you lying to us about your ability to fit into a medium shirt?

We have them both now. Hop Patrol pint glasses and long sleeve Hop Patrol tee shirts! We usually only have time to make beer, not clothes ;).

Since this thread is already up, I have a couple questions regarding Decorah:

    * Places to stay the night?
    * Places worth checking out (mostly food related)?
    * Vegetarian options?

I've made the trek many times. We stayed at many places, from the historic Winneshek (sp) to the Country Inn, the lodging is straight forward. Food has some options, with my favorite being Bistro La Rana. Ever changing, very good bistro fare and they always have Golden Nugget on tap...

Went to El Bait Shop last night - all out of Pseudo Sue but enjoyed a Golden Nugget. Had to get a growler to go... Love the TG beers!

Hmmm....they must have tapped a fresh keg sometime after then, as I enjoyed 2 pints of Sue at El Bait last night.

  20. Stop thinking and make sure you stop at TG. A very special brewery about to explode!
  21. Understandable, but marketing is a good thing.
Wore my TG shirt to 4 hands in st. Louis and had a few people talk to me about you guys. Would love to have more swag to wear at other beer festivals, GABF in October, etc.

TG is a good story to tell and swag helps you do it.

But, if I have to choose...I'll pick the beer over swag, but don't make me choose!!!! ;)

I LOVED the one growler I got from this place (Psuedo Sue I think..my brother got it in Hudson) and would seriously contemplate a trip down next time I am in the Twin Cities to load up on some growlers. Figure about two hours from the Twin Cities right? The big question is do they fill any growler or does it have to be their own...If it is the former I am there with 8 growlers....if it is the later I won't make the trip....
  23. You can fill any growler with a govt warning label on it, as long as it is 64 oz. correct me I I'm wrong Clark Mike or Bob

Not trying to stir any shit or anything, but I 100% agree that marketing is a good thing. I know you guys already have a plan for the growth of your brewery and are completely focused on producing the best beers in the Midwest (which I can probably speak for us all and say we applaud and agree that should be the focus), but, you could benefit from growing your merchandising. I know a LOT of people who would gladly and proudly buy and wear a TG worksheet or t-shirt or hat, but have no easy way to get those items.

If you guys opened a simple web store and offered a few shirts, glassware or bottle openers....I think that would be a decent way to not only promote your product/brands, but also produce a little bit of side revenue, which is always nice.

I reliaze TG has probably already explored your potential avenues, but I would suggest storenvy for a simple web store. http://www.storenvy.com/

  25. Mostly I'm just selfish and want more TG in my life be it beer or swag!!!! ;)
  26. Not
Not sure if you were at darkness day or not but the Hop Patrol was out in full force, they were Handing out free glassware like it was going out of style. Best part of all, the glass was full of beer! They got shirts for sale at the brewpub and I'm sure you could email them and they'd mail you one out if you sent a check. I'd rather the time be spent making awesome IPAS and not designing shirts. With thy bein said, send me a BM and ill be glad to mail you a TG shirt in a trade.

    Don't we all.

But honestly....I think it is a decent business strategy, as long as you don't overproduce your merchandise and invest a lot in inventory you will be sitting on for many months. I would bet it would sell well though.

Never tried to email and find out about apparel, but according to their website, they said no phone/email orders accepted for shirts. It is about a 3 hour drive for me here in Des Moins to the brewery, and I actually haven't made it yet. When I do make the venture (soon hopefully), I hope to score a Hop Patrol shirt.
  29. You'll be glad you made the trip. Good people and great beer.
