2013 Devil's & Tahoma Kriek Belgian-style Sour Ales Release

Going: 0 | Watching: 0 | Invited: 0
We are gearing up for the release of our coveted Belgian-style sour Kriek ales with the strongest batches to date. These beauts will be available at our taproom on Saturday, July 26th at 11am. Starting July 28TH, bottles will be sold throughout the Northwest.

Our delicious Belgian-style sour Kriek ales combine the tart Brettanomyces wild yeast with fresh fruit picked at Double Mountain's orchard, just miles from Hood River. The Devil's Kriek is a Flanders Red-style Belgian ale that boasts 200 lbs of Bing cherries, while the lighter colored Tahoma Kriek utilizes the delicate Rainier cherry with a strong Belgian blonde ale. We brew the Krieks once a year at harvest, then let them spend a full year in maturation before releasing them to a thirsty public.

The 2013 growing season for cherries was difficult with mid-summer rain that caused the cherries to swell with moisture and split. We let the cherries ripen and split and develop more fruit intensity on the tree prior to adding them to the already fermenting the beer. I found the Tahoma to be dry and puckery with cherry overtones with a touch of fennel smokiness from the Brett. The Devil's has more body and richness with a touch of residual sweetness. Earthy black currant notes with a bit of almond nuttiness from the contact of the beer with the fruit pits. I expect both of these beers to continue to change with some age. I believe The Devil's will continue to dry out and become more tart in the next few months. I'm excited to taste how that progresses.
