Spencer Devon Brewing

Hand written street signs work. Put them on the sidewalk and watch the curious pedestrians walk to your place. I was a victim of such; Spencer Devon advertised their brewpub nearby at a street corner in as me and my brother were touring Fredericksburg, and as a beer lover, became a sucker to visit.

The modern brewpub is a modern marvel. Clean, rustic, plenty of space at the bar and around the dining area, big windows looking outwards, and the brewhouse behind the bar. Complimenting the beer is a limited food menu, but with lunch already out of the way, I settled on a beer. Nine different beers pouring, some seasonal and others year-round. Among the styles were a pilsner, brown ale, witbier, IPA, milk stout, and Belgian Blonde. The quality of the milk stout could stand out, especially given its low alcohol level, but the chunky and boring shaker pint glass did not. Although my visit was short, I would come back to Spencer Devon and give it an extended run. (972 characters)

J. Brian's Tap Room

Capitol Alehouse was unfortunately closed due to repairs, so choice number two J Brian's will be filling in for Thursday afternoon. Well placed near the heart of Fredericksburg, J Brian's brings a pseudo-Irish theme to the area with its exterior. Inside, several different room, including one which houses the bar. Baseball on TV above the bar, a cool (temperature) interior, and several friendly faces around the bar greeted me and gave me a good welcome.

24 different taps pouring, and more than half the craft variety. Being a native of California, it was exciting to see brands which I hadn't heard of; Otter Creek, Devil's Backbone, Starr Hill, Adventure. Not to feel homesick, Lagunitas, Bells, and Innis & Gunn had beers pouring too. Mostly nonic pints made up the glassware, and at $5.40 per pint, provided relatively good value for a bar.

Two friendly faces working the bar plus quick service results in a high service score. My steak sandwich lunch was acceptable too; hearty and a good compliment to the two fresh beers I had. (1,041 characters)

I've never eaten here so I can't comment on the quality of it. When I go, I usually just sit at the bar and try their beers. When I first came here the beers were pretty run of the mill- not very exciting and moderately palatable. Lately they've really stepped up their game to beers that are actually pretty tasty and worth making a visit to try.

Bar service is usually pretty good, but I can never get a bartender to say more than 5 words to me, even if it's dead inside. I like to chat with bartenders about beer or whatever. They seem more interested in standing at the end of the bar talking amongst themselves, but they usually check on me pretty regularly to make sure I don't need anything so they get higher marks for that. They usually have a diverse portfolio available, which is nice (not all IPA and wheat beer). I met the brewmaster at work one time and he was super cool and very appreciative of my feedback (I commented on how good his recent barleywine was). (976 characters)

Kelly and staff have the secret sauce in running a great craft beer retail establishment. Very knowledgable, friendly, and ultra fresh inventory. They do great events, treat their customers well, and can have my money all day long. Growlers, pints, and packages to go are available here. (287 characters)

For being in Lodi, a place with very little beer culture, this place has a pretty good selection and is significantly better since their initial opening. It is a BevMo! so you can expect to find the usual shelf turds, but lately they've had a better-than-average bottle selection. They seem to keep up with rotating stock. They even have a decent selection of pony kegs. Their fridges are pretty good too and stocked with a diverse selection- not just IPAs and Blue Moon. For service, there are a few people who work there that really know what they're talking about and generally care about what they're selling. Not a be-all-end-all stop for beer, but if you don't want to travel to Sac or the East Bay this is the place to go. (729 characters)

A beautiful summer afternoon dining on the terrace over the Connecticut River with guests from France. Seating and service was not exactly quick, but we were in no hurry, the staff was courteous and the food was very good. Had a couple of glasses of HF's Edward which put me in an especially good mood. Will definetly be going back. (334 characters)

We visited on a busy night and the service was understandably slow. The waitress more than compensated for the service with comp-ing a drink and getting us out food. We had mussels and fish and chips. The duck wraps are incredible and the beer list is fantastic. This is a must for any fan of Belgian brews. The beer list is pages long. (336 characters)

Just opened on Monday. The new restaurant from a former Cottonwood/Liberty Station owner, along with a few high profile chefs that have jumped on board. A small dinning area, a 1/2 square bar with big windows that face 19th. Which make the spot feel more open than it is. A relaxed rustic vide that is great. They are still working on the patio, which looks to be done when cooler weather comes. I am very much looking forward to that.

They have already installed a tap wall of 25 taps. As of now, only about 10 taps on though. Once they get situated better, the rest of the wall will be on line. Yellow Rose, Hans Pils, Odell IPA and 90 Shilling as the highlights for me. As well as some Lagunitas, Stone, and a handful of others. More national and local beers to come. A really good tap list, even without the the rest of the wall so far.

Service is already on top of everything. Kitchen times are spot on, and I was never left with an empty glass. A small menu that will rotate a little. Whole pod okra that is pickled and fried might be one of my favorite apps anywhere right now. Pulled beef shank with cilantro over hominy is amazing. Deviled Duck egg with smoked jalapeno is on point. Things on my list to try...beef belly burnt ends and grits, the terrine and rillette app and just about everything else. When I want to try everything on a small menu ASAP, the restaurant is doing good IMO.

It is hard to find fault in anything here right now. This will be another regular spot of mine. Already up there with Down House as one of my favorite beer and food stops in my neighborhood. (1,612 characters)

This place is awesome! They only have a few taps, but they are all very high quality selections with a focus on local craft Iowa brews. They had some bottle selections that were also very good.
The food was fantastic and their emphasis on local agriculture is second to none in the area. Prices were fair and reasonable and this place is easily accessible on foot to most places downtown Iowa City.
I highly recommend checking this place out, enjoying a few plates and pints! (478 characters)

This place is located near enough to walk to from Backpocket.
Their beer selection was pretty good and I'd rate it just about the best anywhere in the area. 30-40 tap selections all very good selections. The place seemed newer and the vibe was good.
The food was pretty good and I liked the creativity in the menu items.
When I'm back in the area this will be one of my first stops! (385 characters)

This seems to be a health food store/deli with an ok selection of bombers and six packs. Local breweries like Evolution were well represented. While the variety was not great, what was there seemed to represent the best of what the island has to offer. You could tell that the selection was well thought out for the space. This is not the first place i would go to on the island for beer, but if you are looking for good local food, you are bound to walk out with some beer as well. (486 characters)

This is one of two places I go to when visiting the island. It has plenty of BMC products but also several sixes of local beers. Tall Tales, Evolution, Fin City, and O'Connor were all represented well. I do not recall seeing any bombers this past week. Prices were reasonable. I believe the mix a six ran me about $12. The people in the store left me alone while shopping, but were all nice when I checked out. Worth seeking out if you are in the area, but not a destination shop. (485 characters)

I stopped in yesterday on vacation from Ohio and as mentioned in reviews before, Matt was super helpful and kind. He obviously loves his beer and takes pride in his business. Selection was really good. I got a lot of stuff we don't get back home like Crooked Stave, Farm to Barrel from Almanac, and BOMB! (because of Ohio's stupid 12% law). If you're in the area I highly recommend checking it out and see if you think Matt has kind of a Sly thing going on too. If your last name is Rambo I think it would be hard not to! lol Thanks, Matt! (546 characters)

You can find Lawson's and Alchemist beer here. But the big draw for me was the great organization of their beers. Almost everything was lumped by brewery and they had brewers most of us can't find in the local craft store. They also have glassware and clothing from a variety of Vermont brewers. The guys are friendly, even to tourists like myself. (348 characters)

If you read a bad review for this place I can understand some people may be underwhelmed by the food and beer selection. You would have to be pretty snobbish to not enjoy 3-4 Hill Farmstead options, 2 Lawson's Finest Liquid beers and of course Heady Topper. The food is smaller but you pay less too. a burger was $7 and it was excellent fresh perfectly cooked meat. I am used to NYC prices but for me this place was a great middle of the road price option. Visited twice while in the area. It doesn't hurt that they have two restaurant rooms, a brewery, and next door is the Craft Beer Cellar (which may be the best beer store in Vermont). (639 characters)

One of the few bars in the area that tries to keep Other Half Brewing cans on hand. They have an immense beer selection that is IPA and hop forward. Decent prices for such good beer. In NYC you can spend $7-8 on a Bud light if you are unlucky. So to get a 16oz can of Other Half All Green Everything for $7 is a steal. The food is good but limited. The Wings are outstanding. Give it a try and you will be happy you found this little gem. (438 characters)

What can I say that hasn't already been stated... Monday, as a special, they fill growlers for $2 dollars less than usual. They are one of the few places that doesn't try to make money off of selling their empty glass growler. Oh, they usually only have 3-4 beers on tap. They are a fantastic brewery, and they do can releases of some rare fresh IPAs (Second Fiddle, Mastermind). Definitely worth the stop if you are in the Burlington to Middlebury area of Vermont. (465 characters)

Best brewery I have ever been to, hands down. Amazing beer, great prices. The line to get beer can become a bit ridiculous but that is not the fault of the brewery, its just because the beer is so well done. I have only been there once but am already planning my trip back! 5 stars all the way. (294 characters)

This is a great little bottle shop. The owners are awesome and very informative. They will go out of their way to try and find a beer you are looking for. Prices are pretty average for the area. They mostly serve singles but do have some 4 and 6 packs as well. This is one of the top places in NE PA for harder to find beer. (324 characters)

Everyone was nice and service was great, got everything I wanted. Great prices too...would happily go back. (319 characters)

It is just a great place to come for a few beers and dinner after work. Chill atmosphere, sometimes a little busy. No complaints from me! (327 characters)
