How to Make Invocation, a Beer Cocktail with Irish Stout, Rye, and Chartreuse

Kindred Spirits by | Dec 2016 | Issue #119

Crafted at Velveteen Rabbit in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dubbed Invocation, which alone may summon the greatest of supernatural powers, this beer cocktail is particularly inspired by one of the most supreme forces of our time: Barry Manilow (specifically his later works and magnum opus My Dream Duets). It combines rye whiskey and the herbal flavors of basil syrup and Chartreuse with the velvety, chocolate, and coffee notes of Gutshot Dry Irish Stout from Henderson, Nev.’s Bad Beat Brewing.

2 oz Bad Beat Gutshot Dry Irish Stout
1 oz Old Overholt Rye
1/4 oz Green Chartreuse
1 oz basil simple syrup
1/2 oz lime juice
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Bay leaf for garnish

Shake all ingredients except beer in a shaker tin. Strain over ice in a rocks glass. Top with Stout. Garnish with bay leaf.

Basil Simple Syrup
Bring 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar to a boil until sugar dissolves. Turn off heat and stir in 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, steeping for 15 – 30 mins. Strain syrup into sealed container. Store refrigerated.
