Abnormal Beer Company’s Boss Pour and Mocha Stout
Last month I found myself shopping for provisions at The Best Damn Beer Shop in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. While gazing at the vast selection, one of the staff suggested that I grab one each of these freshly canned four-packs from Abnormal Beer Co., as they were apparently going to fly off the shelf. Two completely different styles, and he assured me that both were awesome.
So I dedicate these reviews to the helpful staff at The Best Damn Beer Shop. They pointed me in the right direction, and now I’m beering it forward to you. Get your hands on some Abnormal beer. It’s awesome.
From the can, Boss Pour is a lively, bright, pale golden color with a foamy head. The nose is loaded with fruit, tropical notes, vegetal suggestions, and dankness. Medium-bodied with a crisp carbonation, This beer greets you with a big splash of citrus rind, orangey notes, salty suggestions, sticky resin, oily feel, and a dry, aspirin edge that rides into the finish. What I like most about this beer is that not only does it check all of the West Coast IPA boxes (bright, clean, hoppy AF), but it brings the dank along with delicious layers of raw, leafy, resiny, and hoppy goodness. And it does so like a—wait for it—freakin’ Boss.

This Oatmeal Milk Stout pours pitch black with a rich, coffee-colored, creamy lace. It smells fresh and roasty like cold-brewed coffee, with a hint of hops. Full-bodied and viscous, with a slight chewiness and prickly carbonation beneath that creates a creamy and silky feel. Brewed with local San Diegan coffee from Mostra Coffee, this Stout drops plenty of roastiness, baker’s chocolate, bitter cacao nibs, espresso beans, cola, and dark cherries onto the palate, all of which folds into a rounded lacto sweetness with some oat bread notes. Semi-astringent with a dry finish and lingering coffee. Thanks to Abnormal for taking two things that I geek out over and mashing them together.
