Teachings from the Tap: Life Lessons from Our Year in Beer
By Merideth Canham-Nelson
Beer Trekker Press, May 2012, $16

Who knows where the self-publishing industry is headed, but cheers to authors like Canham-Nelson who can actually finish a manuscript. This book chronicles a year in beer traveling, from a meeting of the Great Northern Brewers Club in Alaska to the crowded patio of Falling Rock in Denver, then across the pond—the author describes her anxiety dealing with brusque waitresses at Munich’s Weisses Bräuhaus, and a whirlwind attempt to visit every Trappist brewery. Although it puts the attention span to the test as a whole, Teachings from the Tap does work well as a reference book—if you’re planning a trip somewhere specific, reading about Canham-Nelson’s experience there will give you an entertaining look at what you’re in for.
