375 mL bottle. Pours deep golden with a little bit of cloudiness. No head. Smells of apricots and lots of acidity. Some oak. Tastes very sour right up front. Puckeringly sour stone fruit. Oak tempers it a bit, but it's very sour. A little bit of dried grass. It's a pleasant flavor, but it's extremely sour.

4.39/5  rDev +3.1% | Average: 4.26
look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

Appearance is very, very dark, rich looking brown color with some mahogany highlights to it, poured with a half finger width of fine dark mocha colored head that had a poor retention to it and leaves only tiny patches of watery lacing on the glass.

Mild but present aroma to it of some dark fruits, dark chocolate and light hints of coffee.

Heavy bodied roasty malt flavor forward, intense and dark with a perfect blend of strong dark fruits like loads of prunes, plums and dates along with bitter dark chocolate and aromatic black coffee with some lightly sweet, burned brown sugar and molasses note that increases in flavor as it warms along with gaining a faintly acrid sour note to it.

Finishes with a faintly bitter woody, herbal hop flavor on the back end and a light hint of aromatic bourbon with some faint oak & vanilla notes to it, still even with the bourbon hints it is less boozy tasting then its %11.5 would lead you to believe with a slick almost satiny mouth-feel, leaving an aromatic lingering coffee notes on the palate and a nice warmth to the back end.

Exceptionally well balanced example of an Imperial porter, no gimmicks to it just bold, flavorful and smooth.

look: 3 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2.25 | feel: 2.25 | overall: 2.25

500ml bottle, bb in 9m, decently fresh.

Clear ruby-tinted mahogany, quickly fading head.

Roasted caramel on the nose, no hop aroma.

Taste on the other hand is missing any bitter chocolate/coffee aromas, which of course is a disappointment. Mouthfeel is mostly watery, with a timid aftertaste of slight graininess. The carbonation does not counterbalance anything, rather it serves to highlight the emptiness.

I think the 'schwarzbier' actually defines this better than what it is supposed to be (tmavy). Not very good in any category.

375 mL bottle. Faint pop on corking. Clear golden. Wisps of foam. Smells of strong cheesy funk, bordering on butyric, with stone fruit acidity and oak. Tastes of strong brett character. Earthy yeast notes cutting a peach sweetness. Still funky, but not as cheesy and vomit-y. Lingering oak. Medium body with low carbonation. A little off-putting, but does have some redeeming qualities.

12 oz. bottle. Clear deep golden. Smells of grapefruit and pine hops. Caramel malt. Tastes of orange, light garlic, grapefruit. Light sweetness from a honey malt profile. Moderate pine bitterness. It's got just a touch of grassy and herbal hops, too. Medium body. Drinks very easily. Very enjoyable, though not a standout profile. Classic and drinkable.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours golden yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Floral, citrus, tropical and stone fruit, pine, grassy herbal notes, biscuity malt, and a just a touch of sweetness.

T: Resinous spicy pine, citrus, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and tangerine, grassy, floral, and herbal notes, a little tropical and stone fruit, papaya, mango, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, cherry, and a hint of melon, crackery biscuity malt, and a touch of sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Not quite a full can of whoop ass, but still a pretty solid West Coast IPA.

Fruit and Field Beer | 3.5% ABV

3.5/5  rDev +1.4% | Average: 3.45
look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Slightly hazy light golden in color, with a moderate, dense, white head, with good retention. Fat bubbles cluster on the glass walls, and profuse streams of bubbles race to the surface.

Aroma: Prominent notes of citrus, in particular lime and lemon, both of juice and zest. Bread and cracker malt are also abundant. Due to the low ABV of 3.5%, no alcohol is present in the aroma. As another reviewer noted, there is an odd aroma of salt water, not what one would expect in a beer. There seems to be a very faint herbal hop aroma.

Taste: Lime juice and zest power the taste at the opening, as well as salt, offering a slightly sour opening. Bread and cracker malt present, as well, but are the undercurrent of the taste, supporting the lime and salt. There is a quite moderate grassy and herbal hops presence, but very understated. Finishes with a faintly bitter hop note and a reprise of lime and salt.

Mouthfeel: Soft and pleasant, fairly full.

Drinkability/Notes: Really not bad, quite refreshing and perhaps the quintessential lawnmower beer at 3.5% ABV, with its refreshing lime and replenishing salt. Certainly worth a try or two, with its availability and modest price.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-four ounce aluminum can, served in a South American-style Pilsener glass.

As unclekeith said, you have no idea this is TIPA based on the way it goes down. The kind of buyer beware most love. I do actually wish it had a little more "umph" or substance behind it. Just a teeny tiny bit. It feels a little too weak how subtle it is.

On tap at Provisions in Orange, CA.

Damn thing almost glowed a golden black (if that is possible) but maybe it’s just the hipster lighting. Smell is a bit odd. It’s super spicy with holiday essence like Santa is like when he’s trying to slay Mrs. Claus, but it’s also a bit weird. Like, something artificial or chemical that I cannot detect. But it’s slight. Taste is the same. Christmas in my mouth like the cookies my grandmama used to bake for me. Not bad. Feel isn’t the thickest, but it’s still pretty solid like a Jiffy Lube oil change.

Raul ain’t trippin’ here. It’s just aite.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Dec 11 2019 and served barely chilled.

Pours mahogany brownish-black with crimson red highlights; one inch of khaki-coloured head is initially situated atop, gradually wilting over the next five minutes or so. A messy coat of lace is splattered about in the process, with a wide, foamy collar and a patchy cap left floating upon the surface; looks good. It smells of toasted nuts and treacle, with suggestions of milk chocolate, roasted grains, vanilla and toffee sweetness, as well as an understated smokiness. So far, so good.

A fine English-style porter, tilting a bit more towards the bitter and roasted side than is typical. I'm tasting plenty of roasted malt goodness - cocoa and chocolate, as well as hints of treacle and toasted nuts. Towards the back end is where flavours of coffee grounds and earthy, grassy hops eventually develop; roasty-sweet finish with a faint smokiness in the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, creamy texture which I found rather appealing, and also helps contribute to this beer's high level of drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Pitchfork Porter is the first Oast House product I've had the opportunity to try, and it earns a reasonably solid thumbs up. They could've just as easily called this one Shovel Stout: it has a prominent roasted quality that I tend to associate more with stouts than porters, but I don't particularly enjoy quibbling over the details of the stout/porter dichotomy, certainly not enough for it to have any impact on my grading. The fact of the matter is that this is a good English-style porter that I plan to pick up again, and would encourage others to try.

Poured with a lightly built frothy head that in a few minutes dissipated and vanished..
Has a faint nose- a bit for citrus and some hops and faint hints of flower boquet.
I think that this bock is a light bodied brew with mild demeanor.
I consider this one a member of my ice cold summer thirst quencher group.
Finish is light bodied and mild.
One thing that I do like is the lower alcohol content.
In my opinion it's not a bock beer that you'll reminisce about in years to come.

355ml bottle, BB 10/09/2020, Poured into a tulip.
Look: Pours a clear gold, about 1 cm of bubbly white head that quickly subsides to almost nothing. Looks fine.
Smell: a little bit of grain, maybe corny, some generic green hoppiness there but you really have to search for it. Not unpleasant, but pretty basic.
Taste: a little sweetness, some generic macro lager flavour, touch of herbal hop to round it out. Very reserved.
Feel: quite light, not a lot of mouthfeel, but a little tingly carbonation. Not much bitterness or length of flavour.
Overall: It's not unpleasant, but there isn't really that much going on with this one. I would have a couple if I were driving (as I am this arvo), but otherwise I would probably give it a miss.

Can to tulip.
The appearance had a wonderful chill haze orange color to it. Dissipated gently to leave just a wispy concave lace softly against the glass.
The aroma had some shaved orange peel bitterness flowing into some pine needle bitter character.
The flavor leaned towards some bitterness initially then followed into some sweetness then back towards the bitterness, trying to blend but not fully. Some dry piney character and orange juice in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Good carbonation, somewhat low. Finishes somewhat bitter with a low key juicy pithy burst of some orange rind.
Overall, I'd say a pretty nicely done DIPA somewhat bordering on a NEIPA. I'd have again.

Consumed 1/19/20

A: Pale tangerine orange with some golden and yellow tones - hazy, of course - pours with a small off-white head, fades to a few wisps, leaves a small collar and some streaks of lacing

S: Ah yes, another Tree House juice bomb - tangerine and orange juice with some lime - herbal, green, leafy hops - dank notes, woodsy notes - peaches, stone fruit, tropical fruit, mango, passion fruit, and a white grape aroma (from the Nelson) that is only becoming more apparent as it warms - fruit cocktail with syrup, a bit sweeter than expected

T: Plenty of citrus, with tangerine and orange juice, candied orange, with some grapefruit, lime - herbal, green, dank, woodsy hops - peach, apricot, passion fruit, mango, hint of pineapple - loads of white grape, hints of white wine - malts are mostly pale, slightly doughy, oats are not prominent in the actual flavor - light sweetness that lingers

M: On the heavy side of medium, very smooth, chewy, could be cleaner

O: Proper glassware for this beer = sunglasses

Citra and Galaxy play together quite well, so why note throw some Nelson in there? And some oats? Brighter Than Starlight is quite nice, but it is not my absolute favorite new beer I've had recently from Tree House.

Looks dark red, amber when held to light. Black otherwise. Smells very strong! Not a pleasant smell, sort of like over dehydrated malt. Tastes very alcoholic, which it should for a 10.4 abv beer, but also overly malty and sort of syrupy. I usually like Imperial Stouts but I think this one missed the mark a bit.

T: rich and creamy, roasted coffee taste with hints of caramel and chocolate and a slight (pleasant) bitter toasty taste. Coffee flavor more prominent as it warms!

I also like that a hard pour is recommended because it's fun watching the beer foam up and arguably impossible to mess up. Will definitely be buying again as this is my new go-to for stouts! Not recommended for people who dislike coffee.

Drank from a 12 ounce can. Scores are based on the style.

Look - An instant way to improve this can: remove the diagonal blue stripe, put a thin black outline around the badge, and make the font black. Otherwise good.

Smell - Aggressively sweet and corny. After a minute with it, though, the odor is almost undetectable.

Taste - Bland and forgettable, a vague metallic sweetness. Nothing offensive, but nothing noteworthy.

Feel - A decent body with moderate carbonation. Easy going and simple.

Overall - It's lack of anything is its strongest feature. This would make a good party beer.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip.

Pours opaque browning black with a nice cola/rootbeer-tan head that lingers remarkably well for the ABV. Good lacing and legs on this one.

Aromas of tobacco, coffee, leather, caramel malt, molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, hints of dark fruit,

The flavors follow the nose. Caramel malt, coffee, rye and oak, vanilla, bittersweet chocolate, anise, tobacco, and char. Oak notes present. Booze definitely present, but not as hot as the ABV would suggest.

The brew is smooth, creamy, and very drinkable for the ABV.

A nice departure from the bourbon-barrel aged stouts; the rye imparts a drying aspect instead of the usual bourbon sweetness.

Perfect scores across the board for one simple reason: they packed ALL the smell, taste, flavor and feel of a tremendously huge IPA into a session IPA.

Super smooth and drinkable without risk of a blackout. This is absolutely perfect for someone wanting full figured taste, but still has something to do for the day. Currently refinishing a guitar, and this one’s not going to hold me back!

16oz canned 11-21-19. Opened 1-18-20.
2 finger dense white head with excellent retention. Fully opaque NEIPA with some solid particles and liquid substance in suspension within the beer. Lacing is thick and sticky.
Tropical mango, ripe. Some floral character apparent as well. Peaches and cream. Late green and weedy character in the aroma.
Mango, peach, cream, and a gritty malt in the finish that's out of place.
Full body and soft mouthfeel. Low bitterness. Tropical fruit in the medium length finish.

Reviewed on release day. Poured from 16 oz. can into a snulip glass. It pours an opaque tangerine color with tan hues and sports a half finger of fluffy, bright white head and lots of soapy lacing. The aromatic nose features pungent pineapple, lemon, tangerine, and faint smells of lime and vanilla. Wow! The taste bursts with ripe, sweet pineapple, along with tangerine, tart lemon, pine needles, and creamy vanilla, and slightly bitter hops and pepper at the finish. There is a hint of astringency but that will no doubt mellow as it ages in the can. This is a fruity sensation that tastes like a pineapple creamsicle. The vanilla lends a creamy feel to the body. It's pleasantly carbonated and drinks surprisingly easily for its 8.6% ABV. Overall, Head Shake is a delicious pineapple bomb. It's a fitting - and really fun - beer to celebrate Slack Tide's 4th anniversary. The brewery continues to quietly produce excellent IPAs.

A rare gem purchased at Alberta Beer Exchange. Thanks to one of the owners for pointing this rarity out to me.

A dollar from this brew goes to support Simama Project, supporting at-risk kids in Nanyuki, Kenya.

Appearance - Pours a jet black with two fingers of tan head.

Smell - earthy and leafy hops, cocoa, coffee bean, vanilla bean, roasted malts, and earthy yeast.

Taste - earthy and leafy hops upfront. The cocoa, coffee and vanilla bean follow suit. The lactose comes through next providing a creamy texture to the brew. The roasted malts and earthy yeast round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes velvety smooth with all ingredients lingering.

Overall - A pleasant sweet stout that is more on the American/Imperial side of things. This one is full of flavour and pleasant to sample. If you find yourself at Alberta Beer Exchange grab yourself a bottle and you won't be disappointed depending on if they have them still in stock. Well executed overall for my first go at this new Alberta brewery!

Handsome clear amber brew with long-lasting white foam in the Maredsous goblet. Sudsy and sharp mouthfeel. Aroma of orange and mango with a nose of passionfruit and apricot. Clean and sweet with the fruity wave washing over your tongue. Massive orange peel and just a hint of the grapefruit rind.

Rich and mouth-filling. Moderate bitter aftertaste is in line with the sugar and fruit. Quite tangy. Well balanced overall. Highly sippable and a good example of how to make a DIPA. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Barons Market.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium gold-orange with a quarter finger white head that dissipates to patches with slight lacing. Aroma of candi malt, lavender, mild dates; very aromatic. Flavor is candi malt, honey, lavender, dates and a hint of lemon. Finish is semi-sweet lavender with a light herbal bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Delivers what it promises, with a floral mixture of honey and lavendear mediated by light dates. A faint citrus flavor develops near the finish which is drier and leaves herbal, rather than hop bitterness, like a sahti. The lavendear is interesting, but it is a dominating aroma and flavor that gave me all of my daily recommended floral quotient for the day. The base is somewhat like a golden ale made with honey and is pleasant. I enjoyed this, but it is floral enough that it is a one time experience. I like this brewery's use of honey and would like to try more.

Poured from a 1 pint 6 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, there is no "best by" date that I can find.

APPEARANCE: pours a clear, copper color with almost no head, what little head was present dissipated in seconds until there was no head, not even a ring of bubbles around the rim, the beer had medium carbonation and there was no lacing on the glass, not pretty to look at.

SMELL: faint toasted bread and caramel.

TASTE: the taste follows the nose, initially sweet caramel and toasted bread then a mildly bitter hop finish with the taste of tea.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: I did not like this beer, it was not flat but had no head, no lacing and did not appeal to me, I would not buy this one again and would not recommend to anyone.

16 oz can, canned on 12/19/19, best by 3/18/20. Pours very turbid dark yellow with a thin white head that quickly goes to a thin collar that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is sweet juicy citrus fruit and wheat malt.

The flavor is sweet fruit on a bready wheat malt base with some resiny hops and a good amount of balancing bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery.

Overall, a nice NE IPA.

11.2 oz. bottle, indecipherable date code. Great Lakes Snifter.

A: pours a crystal clear dark amber like over-steeped tea, with one finger of foamy off white head that dissipates disappointingly quickly. Lots of visible small-bubble carbonation. I have to give an extra quarter point for the shape of the bottle, and the classy, MG-inspired label.

S: Mild English hops and Ale esters get you right away, some toasted malt, but a more muted nose than I remember the last time I had it. Kind of flat, actually. Maybe I have a cold.

T: arrives with loads of carbonation and English hop and yeast character. Earthy, floral hops, mildly sweet toffee malts and a vague stewed fruitiness like red delicious applesauce made with the skins on.

M: lighter than I remember, but crisp, though not as crisp as Fullers ESB, and this has noticeably more carbonation. Perhaps a little thinner than I’d like.

O: I saw a single of this and had to pick it up. I’ve had it on a couple of occasions in UK-themed pubs, and loved it every time. I recognize it is macro, but this English pale ale taste is what introduced me to beer beyond fizzy yellow lager in the late 90s, and no matter where craft beer goes this taste feels warmly familiar. This is not the best English pale I’ve had, but is perhaps the most typical of the style in my mind’s eye, and is one I’ll come to again and again. Crisp, malty, earthy, floral, slightly sweet, clean-finishing. Superb. I’d buy a four pack.
