16 oz single can, dated 2/11/21, into Urban South glass.
$4.49 / can from Red's.

Stout black with some light passing through at the bottom bringing a reddish root beer tint to the bottom of the glass. Brown to khaki head, 1 finger, recedes quickly to a thin ring, no lacing.

If there were such thing as Mexican S'mores (are there?), it would smell like this. Marshmallow and crushed red hots with cinnamon, chocolate, chili peppers, and graham crust. It just smells damn good. This is pastry level huge.

Tastes like a MF'in fresh Prairie BOMB. I don't get those very often, only shelf turd Prairie BOMBs, so this is a nice treat. Super fresh cinnamon, with tons of not-too-hot-yet-flavorful chili peppers, a really good dose of warm vanilla, some cocoa, some chocolate, some graham, and a little brown sugar. This is absolutely decadent.

Feel, of course, is where it falls apart. Another thin dark beer by Southern Grist, they can't seem to pull it together here. Anemic for its flavor profile, but forgivable considering. Carbonated, lots of heat from the peppers and none hidden from the alcohol. Dryness on the finish. Desert. Interesting.

Overall, this is easily the only stout from Southern Grist I wish I would have bought a ton of. This is incredibly tasty. Criminally underrated. It's a fresh Prairie Bomb with an unfortunate session stout mouthfeel. Despite that it's super good. Definitely recommended.

16-ounce can purchased at New Seasons in Progress Ridge. Date stamp reads "CANNED ON 0408201." Poured into a nonic half-pint glass.

The body is a deep gold color and slightly hazy. The head is snowy white foam, dense and somewhat creamy, which slowly dissipates and leaves good lacing.

Bready malt, slightly sweet and a little doughy with an abundance of clean smoke character. Some floral and herbal hops come through at the back, and suggest a hint of wintergreen when mixed with the smoke. Tiny bit of sulfur, not unpleasant.

Closely follows the nose. Leads with bready and lightly sweet malt with a touch of honey. Plenty of smoke follows, and mixes well with the malt without overpowering it. The moderately intense smoke character is clean and woody, rather than savory or meaty. Some herbal and floral hops make a brief appearance leading into a drying, malty finish balanced with lingering smoke.

Medium-bodied, smooth and nicely rounded. Moderate level of finely-textured carbonation.

Lunar Illusion is a well-made helles lager with a substantial amount of smokiness that still shows a good balance with the malt from start to finish. It is a touch sweeter and smokier than the Rauchbier Hell collaboration from Heater Allen and Wayfinder, and lacks the gorgeous finesse of that beer. Still, it is a very good example of the style, and I am glad that ForeLand plans to make this one of their "Periodic" beers. I look forward to trying it again.

12 oz can from Total Wino in Laffy Louise
It was ejaculated into the tin can on November 11th, 2020.

Root beer brown with similar transparency, nutty brown head of 1 finger, recedes to a ring, no lacing.

Smells like a chocolate soda, leaning towards chocolate malt (frosty glass'ed ice cream treat). Slight yeasty twang but mostly chocolate pop/diner milkshake.

Flavor brings a hint of that chocolate malt (ice cream treat) forward, bringing ample sweetness to carry this beer to the finish and make my brain mistakenly crave more. The rest of this beer is kinda trash, the malts are saggy, there's not a whole lot of robust roastiness to it, and there's a twang in there I can't quite put my finger on. It's like bad popcorn chicken sneakily tossed in ranch powder. Once you stop for awhile and take another sip it resets though, and you get full on chocolate malt, thick straw and all.

Feel is on par with a brown ale, maybe a brown-plus, if that makes any sense. Busy carbonation lights this one up, lots of starches and dryness throughout. Adheres to the tongue like a superglue coating.

Overall, yeah it's okay, nothing I'd return to though. I think it's an overrated beer because all I heard was "try that beer". I did. Bought the tay-shart, went back home. I can and have brewed better. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Pours a super hazy golden color with a soapy white head. Meh retention, settles into a soapy cap.

Big tropical notes on the nose. Pineapple and mango are forefront. Sweetness is in check. Inviting.

The taste is of dirty orange and grapefruit rind. Pineapple and mango. Good tropical notes without being super sweet. Some melon. It is fruity but balanced.

The feel is moderate with weakish carbonation. Sweet on the palate but its from the hops. Drinks easy for the ABV.

Good IPA. Doesn't need the beefy ABV

Murky, opaque, orange with a thick and creamy head and clingy lace. Floral and citrus in the nose. First sip is so damn smooth and creamy. Juicy and fruity with pineapple, strawberry, lychee, overripe peach, cantaloupe, and mandarin orange. Quite sweet, but not cloying. Dank and herbal hop profile that's a bit sticky and oily on the palate too. Honey, toasty, soft bready malts. Dry, earthy finish.

This is a one hell of a fruity, juicy, and soft hazy.

12 oz bottle, dated 12/11/20, into Urban South glass.

Hazy blonde with a finger of stable head, leaving puffy lace on the sides.

Aroma of pale malt, wheat malt, and a non-descript presence of fruitiness. As it warms a bit nectarine is detectable in that fruitiness.

Flavor is pretty much an aggressively hoppy pale wheat ale with chunky nectarine. It has that dusty wheat element with a crisp and bright yet bullying hop presence, giving edge to what would otherwise be a Blue Moon with an orange slice.

Feel is dusty, crisp, heavily carbonated, with moderate starch and mild alcohol. Starchy and semi-dry finish.

Overall, a fair to good beer. I'm not wild about it, but my local grocer was throwing this away for $4.99 / 6 pack so I figured I'd give it a shot. I won't go back for more, but the passionate wheat ale fan should.

Golden brew with plenty of foam in the tumbler. This is described as a "Hoppy Golden Ale" which sounded good to me. The hops are Strata and Centennial, and used sparingly. Light body with plenty of suds in the mouth. Aroma of pine and melon, and lightly flavored with same.

This is a thoroughly drinkable light beer with a lot more interest than so many Lagers or Blonde Ales. Enough hops to give it some aromatic flavor but leaving only a trace of bitterness in the aftertaste. From the 12 oz can purchased at Safeway.

3.82/5  rDev -4.3% | Average: 3.99
look: 2.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a 16 oz can that I bought in North Carolina.

L - Hazy golden color with tons of suspended chunks that just hang in place throughout the glass. Hops? Yeast? Some other form of sediment? I don't know, but it's not attractive, and it is not the milkshake opaqueness that is common to NEIPAs. These are individual chunks of something. White head is fluffy and long-lasting with lots of lace.

S - Hop aromas of pine and grapefruit, like a West Coast IPA, but also with a sweeter note. The sweet note reminds me of candied fruit, perhaps pineapple. Very appealing in an IPA.

T - I taste the candied pineapple or fruit very quickly initially, then it is overtaken by strong grapefruit hops. Not much else comes through in the flavors.

F - Medium to thick body with some mouth-coating sweetness. Moderate, spritzy carbonation. Super strong hops bitterness almost burns the mouth and tongue. Alcohol is evident but is not hot.

O - This is a good, if unusual, West Coast IPA. It has some of the sweetness of a NEIPA, but with a definite West Coast hop pallet. The appearance was really unusual and off-putting in the can I tried, but I'm willing to give it another try due to the enjoyable aromas and flavors.

Best by 9/20/21

This one definitely piqued my interest when I saw it on the shelves. An interesting concept to integrate these new-ish fruit smoothie beers into a wheat ale, a nitro one at that. Then again, nitro is kinda Left Hand's thing so I suppose this is natural for them to do. Let's see what it's all about

Pours a cloudy yellow gold with a constant finger of bone white head that leaves decent lacing

The nose on this one is pretty subtle, I was expecting more for the abv but it's nice regardless. I'm picking up on aromas of coconut cream, sweet pineapple, wheat bread, white pepper, and a touch of grassy hops

Where this was subtle in aroma, it's straight up bland in taste, really killing the fun vibe it had going for it. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting light wheat, coconut milk, and vanilla. The swallow brings notes of pineapple puree, coconut milk, and a touch of general citrus

A medium body and almost no carbonation results in a smooth and creamy beer, which would be nice if it had anything in terms of taste. Finishes sweet and slick

Yeah, this one is a swing and a miss. I guess my curiosity just got the best of me

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, cocoa, nuts anddrip coffee. Flavor is dark toasted malt with a touch of char, hazelnuts, light vanilla, cocoa and coffee. Lingering light nutty and coffee finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A wonderfully balanced stout that has very clear hazelnut and coffee notes, but the nuts, coffee and vanilla are all in harmony. The light char of the malt and coffee are particularly well integrated. Unlike many nut infused stouts, the hazelnuts are clearly identifiable to variety in the flavor (more generic nuts in the aroma). The flavor is full at the beginning of the taste and thins out a little bit in the end, but leaves a satisfying coffee finish like a hazelnut latte. Very nicely done.

A: The beer is jet black in color and poured out of the can with almost the consistency of motor oil. It poured with a short dark mocha head that left a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark chocolate cake are present in the nose along with notes of bananas.
T: The taste follows the smell but the flavors are stronger and there are additional note of hazelnuts.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and very slick on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is like have a liquified version of banana chocolate cake with notes of banana and hazelnut. You can definitely get the sense that it is strong based on how it poured out of the can and the heavy mouthfeel but it drinks rather well because the alcohol is well masked from the taste.

Part of the wonderful deluge of midwest goodies sent my way by @FBarber during NBS BIF #13.

Gorgeous pour. Body traps light. Completely dark. Lovely finger of soft dark brown foam. Quite the beaut.

Nose has lovely rich velvety espresso with vanilla and milk chocolate and sure enough there's a hint of raspberries layered in there as well. Inviting.

The berries are much more prevalent here, beginning at the first sip. It starts off as just kind of a general berry/fruit sweetness that builds alongside the other components I will get to in a moment to reveal a jammy decidedly raspberry note. We'll come back to this later. The build alongside this has silky espresso and dark chocolate as well as a hint of vanilla and spice and oak from the barrel. This brings us back to the raspberry. You know how raspberries are actually kind of tart alongside their juicy sweetness? It's one of the great things about them, is they offer a balance and a range of experience, and that presents here. The finish has some bitter from the coffee, and a bit of pucker that feels like the raspberry tartness joining the oakiness of the barrels and a bit of alcohol astringency (that works well in this situation to accentuate the other flavours listed there) to give it a little 'ooh!' to the finish. Really enjoyable.

Body is velvety smoothe, and that tart finish I descibe above fades to leave behind some of the dark chocolate bitterness and a slight reminder of the alcohol contained therein. Would not descibe it as hot, but it isn't shy about it's double digit ABV.

I'm really enjoying this. Raspberry and chocolate are such a natural seeming pairing, but I feel like I still don't see it quite as often as I'd expect, in beer. I think it really really works well here, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to try it. Thanks Frank!

A tale of 3 beers, all Pliny the Elder.
The first one I ever tried, courtesy of @jayorear in a BIF was transcendent- absolutely astonishing to me and my friend who I shared the bottle with.
We drank the second bottle about 10 days later and wondered if it was the same beer. It was still good, but just a WCIPA of average taste. Odd.
So now I’m trying one that is exactly 1 month past the bottle date and it’s back as the best, but not transcendent.
There must be a fairly narrow window for this to be at its best, and it’s that reason alone I can’t rank it all 5s.

Smells of tangerine, melon, biscuit, grapefruit, toasted grains, peppery spices, yeast, herbs and orange peel. It’s kind of muted, but still smells nice with a lot of citrus aromas.

Tastes good as well, with tangerine, orange peel, grapefruit, melon, faint pineapple, biscuit, toasted grains, a little caramel, floral notes, buttery crackers, peppery spices, yeast, herbs and apricot in the finish. Balanced more with the flavors playing off each other nicely, completely hiding the ABV and going down easy with the mild bitterness.

Murky straw colored body. One fat finger of white head, which recedes to a thin cap. Leaves tendrils of lacing on the non-drinking side of the glass.
Aroma is abundant with orange citrus, tropical and melon hop smells.
Taste is sugar sweet, with an overlay of the hops. One part has the flavor of orange soda. A little sting, especially on the tongue, but not a hop burn in the throat. Juicy and light. Orange, melon, and a hint of strawberry.
Medium mouth feel, and smooth but short of being syrupy. Very good carbonation.
Lots of aroma and flavors, but very light to drink. Kind of like an orange spritzer, but a minor hop dankness exists throughout.

Sampling a cold 16 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. Part of a swap with @adrock314. thank you!
The beer pours a deep clear mahogany color into my mug. I do get a bit of sediment at the end of the pour, but stop before emptying the can.
A fizzy khaki colored head of less than .5 cm foams up and has faded away to nothing soon after the pour.
Aroma on this beer is malty with a mix of toffee, caramel and some brown sugar. I also get a bit of a dark fruit, raisin scent and a little booze. No real hop presence here.
the first sip reveals a medium body with slightly syrupy texture and fine gentle carbonation. Feels okay in my mouth and the beer leaves a bit of a sticky feel on my lips.
Flavor is similar to the nose. I get brown sugar up front and some toffee notes. Again dark fruit, raisin notes come through and this flavor lingers a bit on the finish. I also get a bit of black peppery bite, which I always attribute to higher ABVs, but there is no accompanying warming feel. I dont find hops really here either and this beer drinks pretty easy.
Overall the beer is good, but not great doppelbock. Im glad to have tried it and would like to try something else from this brewery in the future.

Canned 2020/12/21 solstice, thanks to falloutsnow
Pours a light fizzy head with lower retention, crystal clear med amber to slight copper color

Nose is not quite what I was expecting, very nutty and like a granola cereal thing, a bit of toasted malts, and peanutbutter, sweet caramel, very malty cereal thing, light herbal earthy hops, a little toasted bread, and more caramel as it warms, brown sugar, just a touch of oak and coffee

Taste starts with plenty of caramel, toasted bread crust and bisctuity, then back into the big nutty cereal grain, lots of granola, a bit of caramelized honey, fair caramel in general, a light herbal earthy hop character again, quite nutty, a little warming tingly alcohol, touch of fruit as well, brown sugar and a little sweet coffee syrup, a little fresh coffee grounds in the background sticky sweet finish, bit more alcohol, nutty again lingering

Mouth is med to fuller bod, light warming slight tingly alcohol, a tad syrupy, med lighter carb

Overall not very impressed with this one, the malt character was very strange, the granola and cereal grain was eh, and nutty character was over the top for a barleywine, so not quite at the style

Overall this is a really tasty NEDIPA. I will be keeping my out for more from them. 4.25

Poured from 16 oz. can into a pint glass. It pours a very dark cola color with a thin, light khaki-colored head and modest lacing. On the nose there is roasted malt, freshly brewed coffee, oatmeal, cola, and a whiff of tobacco smoke. The taste opens with roasted, fairly bitter malt, with touches of oatmeal, coffee, and chocolate. The flavors are mellow. The mouth feel is crisp and clean with moderate carbonation, and the 5.5% ABV allows for very easy drinking. Overall, Moonlit Grave is okay but not memorable.

Crisp and crushable with a solid roast that's still well balanced against the light-medium body. Love sessionable dark beer like this. Less chocolate than bigger schwarzbiers, but I'll take the trade off for drinkability.

Pours a hazy raspberry color. The carbonation is visible and spritzy; audible too. A pinkish and white head billows to the top then quickly dissipates.

The nose opens with a lactobacillus sourness paired with fruity notes of tart raspberries and blackberries. Aromas of wheat evoke sourdough. Notes of coriander and salt add a nice spice.

Tart and fruity with a light mouth puckering and flavors of blackberry, raspberry, blueberry and lemon. Doughy notes of wheat and sourdough provide a solid malt backbone. Notes of coriander and restrained use of salt. The finish is dry and moderately tart.

Medium to light bodied, easy to drink. The mouthfeel is fairly smooth with a somewhat mouth coating feel. The carbonation opens lively but mellows out a bit.

Nice interpretation of the Gose style, with an easy going tartness that is accessible and refreshing. So far, my favorite Aslin beer.

16oz can. Poured out a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of fresh peaches, tart lemon, vanilla and sweet caramel. Tart and sweet taste from the peaches with a good dose of vanilla. Subtle caramel sweetness, too.

Almost no dark tan head; minimal lace.

Rich notes of medium roast coffee, sweet chocolate & vanilla.

Thick, sticky mouthfeel.

Pastry stout excellence; this is over the top with vanilla, chocolate & coffee, but if this kind of thing is your bag, you're gonna love this. Recommended.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle at the Atkinson market in Ketchum today. The label describes this as the 2019 version of this beer.

The beer pours a dark copper amber color with good head retention and considerable lacing. This beer certainly looks attractive enough.

The label indicates this is a port whiskey barrel aged beer, and I pick up plenty of both on the nose. The problem is, the whiskey and port seem to clash a bit aroma-wise, and drowns out pretty much anything else from the base beer. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, but there's also some underlying butterscotch, vanilla and spice in this moderately sweet beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a moderately long, spice infused finish. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and frankly I was surprised by the 12% abv. listed on the label. So drinkability is really pretty good, outside of the odd whiskey and port flavor blend components.

This is a decent beer from this new to me brewery, and I appreciate their willingness to experiment. That being said, there's really nothing particularly outstanding about this beer, and I likely would not order this beer again.

16oz can, dated 04.22.2021, poured into a Tree House snifter glass.

The beer pours a nice bright golden color, hazy and turbid with orange and amber hues and a nice foamy white head, good retention and lacing. The aroma is pleasant, tangy and bright pineapple, orange and grapefruit, melon with a nice earthy and dank grassy bite, mild pine, soft dough, mineral water and sweet yeast. The flavors are good, lots of tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, melon, tangy citrus, refreshing and juicy, bitter pine, earthy and green hop leaf, raw, oily, grassy, pale grain and sweet yeast at the finish. The mouthfeel is good, coating, lively medium body that has a nice weight and a dry finish.

Verdict: A nice IPA from Other Half. Bright, tangy, juicy, dank, earthy, with a good bitterness to balance the sweetness from the hops and the yeast.

Appearance - Pours with a slight haze and golden yellow in color with a white, near two-finger width head that displays fair retention before dying to a thin, broken layer of suds with a consistent ring on the outer edge. Okay lacing, with thin, broken webbing, lines and small spotting.

Smell - Interesting nose of overripe orange, grapefruit rind, mango, guava and a bit of melon.

Taste - Follows the nose. Notes of mature orange, white grapefruit, guava and lesser mango. Big wave of melon starts small mid-taste, then crests in the finish. Faint, underlying crackerish malt body. Aftertaste lingers with the aforementioned fruitiness, plus a touch of dank and black pepper spice.

Mouthfeel - Near full-bodied with fair carbonation. Drinks smooth for 9.5%, with a semi-dry finish.

Overall - Really nice, tasty DIPA. Has all the elements you'd want in a big boy West Coaster.
