Notes: Pilsner Urquell Nefiltrovaný (unfiltered) is available on the Plzensky Prazdroj tour and at Na Parkanu in Plzen. A limited number of kegs are exported for special events. Though the beer is not kvasnicovy (yeast beer), as there is no wort or young yeast added, it is unpasteurized and unfiltered.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Fairly clear golden colour (beginning of keg, will probably be hazier towards the end). Large white head. Strong aroma of herbal hops (Saaz, I assume), hints of butterscotch as expected, but not disturbing. Lovely and fresh hoppy and herbal character throughout in the flavour, distinct bittering hops in the finish.

First time drinking this Pilsner Urquell. Didn’t know what to expect. Wow! It’s fabulous! I was floored! Rating this Lager 1-5, it’s a world class 5 all around, from appearance, to aroma, to taste & mouth feel. The aroma is 4.5, strong, like a dank lager. The appearance is 5, beautiful clear gold, with a healthy head and tiny bubbles constantly fizzing up from the bottom. Taste is 5, classic, full bodied, straight down the middle, no denying it’s a lager! Mouth feel is 5, like a Lager with substance from tip of tongue to back of tongue. Nothing light about it, just a solid lager mouth feel. Overall rating is 5. Absolutely enjoyable from start to finish! This 178 year old lager recipe brewed in Plzen Czech is classic hard core lager, Pilsner style

Had the luck to grab this when out in Seattle at Queen Anne Beerhall, with group so no review.

Favorite beer of all time. Love the smell and taste of this original Czech Pilsner.

Finally got to try this one here in the states - local bar/restaurant had their yearly keg tapping. Its hard to describe, but this version is exactly what you'd expect from Pilsner Urquell while being very different. The unfiltered/unpasteurized version is much smoother and full in the mouthfeel. Aroma is similar but fresher - more vibrant. Taste is again, very fresh and vibrant. The hops pop while being far more balanced with the malts and yeast in here. This beer is fantastic. I wouldn't and couldn't find a single thing about it that I'd want to change. If you get the chance to try this you absolutely have to.

A: Complex, very floral and slightly spicy hop aroma mixed with a malts, very clean.

A: Deep golden color, lightly hazy with a thick uniform white head that has excellent retention and lots of lacing in the glass.

T: Moderately rich and crisp, the beer has a soft, complex maltiness with a moderate hop bitterness.

M: Medium-light bodied, with moderate carbonation.

O: Super tasty; the beer has a great soft mouth-feel and a complex malt and hoppy aroma and flavor.

On-draught @ Chinaski Lavapies in Madrid. Cost was 4 euro/pint.

HEAD: ~6cm wide. Foamy frothy white goodness. Retention is excellent - ~12+ minutes. Leaves coating lacing as it recedes.

BODY: I'd never know it was unfiltered to look at it. It's the same clear bright yellow-orange with excellent vibrance as regular Pilsner Urquell. Which is to say it looks fantastic.

I see no yeast, lees, or sediment within.

AROMA: Pilsner malts, soft water, wonderful grassy and floral hop character. Fresh and inviting, showcasing Saaz remarkably well.

Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a beautifully balanced Pilsner with pungent depth of flavour.

TASTE: Has a minerally taste, with subtle notes of Saaz hops and clean fresh pilsner malts. The mineral character on the back end isn't great, actually, and some earthy bitterness is even present...I have to wonder if the lines were clean. The wacky bitterness throws it off balance, but it's otherwise well balanced. Subtle crackery malts, a kiss of spice, maybe even a blip of nuttiness?

Decent depth of flavour.

TEXTURE: Crisp, overcarbonated, smooth, and wet. Has a near ideal body for a pilsner. Neither too thick nor too thin.

OVERALL: Not the paragon of the style I expected given the brewery, and far from an improvement on the original Pilsner Urquell. Unrefreshing on account of the inappropriate earthiness in the third act, and its overcarbonation is problematic. I'll definitely buy another when back in the Czech Republic if only out of suspicion the pour I got was through dirty lines, but based on this sample (poured at a reputable Madrid beer bar), it's not a great pilsner.

High C (2.97) / AVERAGE

On tap at Bar Maquila. Waiting for lunch with Pedro & Miguel. More pleasant than the bottled version, without any artificial taste. However, it neither is something specially memorable

On tap at Metro Market Shorewood, WI in a fancy glass I get to keep!

Appearance: hazy straw colored beverage with basically no head.

Smell: slight hop notes. Nothing overpowering.

Taste: Great balance of hops and not at all over the top. So easy drinking.

Mouthfeel: Crisp. Not bitter at all.

Overall: ok, I admit it: Miller Lite turned me off to the genre. When well executed like this, I'm totally on board. Outstanding.

On draft in a dimpled Urquell mug. This is the way Czech pilsner was meant to be consumed. Crisp, spicy, crackery, clean, and delicious. I could drink these all day long.

Poured from a keg at Zwanze Chicago 2015. Probably the beer I went back to the most to cleanse and reset between sours and stouts. What a Pilsner should be. Clear, luminous, creamy head that sticks around. Smell of biscuits and spicey noble hops, hay and dried flowers. A woody note in the background, almost like cypress. Flavor is clean but remarkably full, refreshing without being insubstantial; grassy up front, cereals in the middle, spice and hint of wood before a clean cracker finish.

Three drafts in succession at DMen Tap, served in a branded Urquell mug.
Saturated pale orange gold, hazy with unfiltered yeast and hop particulate, textbook suds and drippy lacing.
Aroma is hoppier than standard issue Urquell, and thankfully zero skunk. Yeasty with a minerally twang as well.
Taste is pleasant, definitely an amped up hop bitterness due to being unfiltered. Grassy, spicy, bready pilsner malt.
Fuller side of light bodied, if that makes sense. Definitely more body, and roundness in this version. Nice stuff.
Reportedly they are flying over kegs now (Dec. 2017), and this one was only 27 days old. The hop presence is pretty assertive.
