I need to own up that this may be new packaging for Pilsner Urquell which emphasizes the year of their very first batch of a Pilsner.
Beautiful clear, dark straw color. Decent starting head but it completely fades within in a couple of minutes and leaves nearly no lace.
The smell is far more malty (in a gentle, soft way) than hoppy which is subtle at best. I like the smell but I'm expecting more floral aromas from Saaz, Tettnang, or Hallertauer hops.
The flavor is more balanced. It starts with a predictable pale malt touch which gives way to a white pepper-like hop bite. The body is rich for the style but with an ample carbonation level. The aftertaste lingers with a dry and moderately bitter way. It's soft like the tasting.
I like the fact that this beer comes in a can preventing the skunking I have come to loath in the green-glass Pilsner Urquells. This retains the delicate flavors that I remember when I visiting the Czech Republic.
