Style: Czech Pilsener

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
While most lagers give away most of their taste profile in the front of the mouth, Pilsner Urquell only hints at its flavour there. Instead, it develops in the middle, followed by a refreshing, clean finish and balanced aftertaste, practically inviting you to have another.

Look: The platonic ideal of a lager. Gold and clear with lots of bubbles and a big frothy white head.

Smell: Yeasty and hoppy, like an IPA that someone dropped in a bakery.

Taste: A delayed impact of bitterness, masking a sort of bread flavor. Not a lot of depth.

Mouthfeel: A little thicker than a typical lager, still pretty carbonated.

Overall: I'm pretty "meh" on this beer. Despite its fame as the original pilsner, it's only okay.

Looks hazy golden with much bubbles. Smells of wet crackers, cereal grains, muted citrus. Taste is smooth and oddly creamy for this style. Feels bland. Overall I remember this beer was much better 30 years ago. This was my go to fresh craft beer in the 80's. I remember much more hop zest, and caramel malts.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle with a best by date of 8/21/18; into a mug.
Appearance- clear and gold with constant streams of carbonation bubbles that sustain a thin, white head; lacing is decent.
Smell - yeast, grains and cracker.
Taste - the nose is a precursor to the flavor profile; ultimately, dull and bland.
Feel - light, crisp, slightly bitter and finishes dry.
Overall - I’ll qualify this by noting that I am not a Pilsner fan; weak and underwhelming.

Label stamped: MAY1418 08:03. So, I assume it was bottled in May of 2017. Not exactly fresh. Georgeous bright gold color with a nice white bubbly head and bubble rising through the gold. Aroma is grainy, bready, spice. Taste is bready, lemon, a touch of sweet malts. Mouth feel is not thin; there is a substantialness there. The hops begin to assert a bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. The bitter aftertaste lingers quite awhile.

After going to Prague and drinking this beer regularly, I grew fond of this beer. Nice flavor, easy to drink. Great beer when your going out with your buddies and are drinking more then one. There is nothing to say bad about this beer.

Poured from a 500ml can into glass. Stamped date on can bottom is 'SEP.15.18 04:21'.
Clear, deep gold colored body. One finger white head settles to bubbly cap and ring. Good coverage of lacing on glass.
Aroma is from the Czech hops, with grassy and sweet elements.
Wet and slightly spicy at the beginning, but this opens to considerable more depth of taste in the middle and toward the end. More spicy and fruity, with that bitter end note that trails away.
Thin to medium mouth feel, with slightly fizzy carbonation.
First time drinking a Pilsner Urquell from a can, and it works. The green bottle is always prone to the skunk effect from the light. This beer was one of the first, along with Guinness, that showed me there was more in beer taste than what could be found from Schlitz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Miller High Life. Of course there are now quite a few US brewed pilsners that get higher ratings, but I have always enjoyed the Pilsner Urquell.

Skunked tried a single from Total Wine 04-06-18

04-08-18 from HEB decided to give it another try. Got lucky, not skunked! Clear medium gold color. Average white head that dissipated quickly. Slight skunk smell, a little earthy with some spice. The taste is of Pilsner malt, as should be expected. There is some fairly assertive herbal, floral, spicy hop bitterness that was a pleasant surprise. I have tried another Czech Pilsner that was very malt forward and this is much more balanced. St. Arnold’s 5 o’clock pils is a very close domestic to this beer. This leaves a noticeable dry bitterness that is not at all unpleasant. Very happy to have found some in-skunked. I hear that it is often found skunked. The bottles are very light brown so I guess they don’t provide enough uv protection. Will love to have more.

Bottle BB 7/22/18, consumed 3/19/18

Poured crystal clear gold color with an inch of head that quickly dissapated and left almost no lacing.

Aroma is grainy, grassy and earthy. I'm not an expert in this style, but this is nice and one of the more pleasant compared to the pilsners I've tried.

Taste is grainy, grassy, some sweet bread notes, floral and earthy. Really flavorful, a lot going on.

Mouthfeel is medium for the ABV, bitterness is solid and a bit higher than some pils. Clean dry finish.

Overall, definitely a solid, quality pilsner. Easy to see how it can stand the test of time. Not my first preference, but I'll probably get it again based on the great price.

My first beer to review, and a fitting first as it has been a favorite. I don't get much head on the pour but it may be my own fault. I love the golden color. I find this to be very drinkable and light, but far from watery. The best aspect of the taste and smell is what it does as you exhale through the nose. I get a little bit of grassy taste and sometimes a hint of bread or biscuits. The best pilsner I've tried - and from Plzen!

The original pilsner. Pilsner urquell is a beer with an amazing history, but I'm here to review so here it goes. It pours clear pale straw. The head is nice but quite small. The aroma is of faint hops, grains, lemon, and strangely tea. The taste is of bread and wheat with additions of lemon grass and hops. Overall one of my favorite pils.

I've bought this many times over the years, while not as good as the unpasteurised versions, it's a solid beer.

Pour s bright, lively, two finger head, gold.

Light hoppy saaz nose, some fruityness

Taste brings that too, more malt, diacytyl there if you go searching. Pleasant bitterness

Full mouthfeel perfect carbonation.

My perfect Czech pilsner would have a touch more bitterness and more saaz character...which is what you get with fresh nefiltrovaný

Appearance – Thin layer of head on a clear yellow body.
Aroma – Faintly skunky. Unimpressive.
Taste – Moderate bitterness with a weak bitter aftertaste. Light grain body.
Mouthfeel – Somewhat thin.
Overall – Not impressed by this one and will not get again.
