From vancurly's description, I believe this is the same beer as what is branded the "Resort Premium Black Ale" at the Hunter Resort's Bluetongue Brewery Cafe.
Pours a slightly hazy light-brown colour - certainly not a dark looking beer, even less so for one called a "black". Head is a thick and powdery off-white colour which retains reasonably well. It's not huge, and not particularly true to any "black" style I've heard of.
Some roasted characters on the nose. Some dirt, dust and a very light roasted bitterness, but not going anywhere near the realms of a true porter. In essence, it's like a slightly differently coloured version of any other of their beers.
Taste is light, more nutty than roasted, quite subtle. Bloating mouthfeel and a rank bitterness on the back which countermands what pleasantness the nutty character leaves. A confused conglomerate of reasonably pleasant, and unacceptably poor characters - the result is mediocre.
It has a tad more interest than Bluetongue's never ending range of pale lagers, but it seems very much a token effort, not a real attempt to brew a proper dark ale. Not bad, but certainly far from greatness.

Attractive beige foam, cola-like colour / red brown. No haze, good bubbling.
Aromas of choc/coffee, touch of hazelnut.
Roasted malt flavours, touch of rust/blood, or the edge of a well-done steak... charry.
Body a bit lightweight, no real follow-through or length. No bitterness.
Starts with promise, but fails on its way through the mouth.
