Notes / Commercial Description:
At Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the pioneers of Double IPA style craft beer. This hop monster uses Premium American 2– Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. Five different Hop Varieties are used in the Hop Juice. It spends two weeks dry hopping in fermenter contributing to its great hop aroma. Starts out sweet and finishes with the crisp bitterness of a Double IPA. This drinkable blend will have you HOPPING till nights end.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is minty, piney, lots of hops. Taste is bitter, bold, alcohol, pine, a medicinal aftertaste. Some malts, just kind of a mess, and a tough beer to finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall a beer that I cannot recommend.

22oz bomber purchased from BevMo in Sunnyvale, CA.

Pours a clear golden hue, with a sticky fine head of pure white that leaves tiny fine lace, and legs as it settles down. Carbonation is extremely fine through the body, which is showing every bit of its 9.7% ABV. Looks pretty heavy and quite impressive.

Nose is disappointing to say the least. For a beer called "Hop Juice" there's a devastating lack of hops. Mostly, it lacks aroma altogether. There's some cached sweetness, muted and flat and fairly neutral. This is laced with a slight pine disinfectant character and something like fresh kitty-litter. Really not very good.

Taste is similarly disappointing. In some sort of ironic impressiveness, it tastes very neutral—for a 9.7% beer to taste so weak, there's something unusual and skilled going into its production. Malt character gives a faint nuttiness that works off what little hop bitterness there is, but there's not a lot of that either. Mostly, it just tastes pretty bland.

Feel has a slight spritz to it which works nicely against the thickness that otherwise constitutes it.

Overall, it's definitely a sub-par DIPA. There are positive things about it, no doubt, but it needs a way more aggressive hop character to live up to its name. The aroma is extremely weak, and the hop flavour on the palate is pedestrian at best. The base is good though—I would believe you could make an awesome DIPA out of the same basic structure.

Pours translucent dirty yellow with a decent amount if head.

Smells a bit "grainy" - the malts taking a forefront with some undertones floral in nature.

The taste also is chewy and bready, toffee notes on the sweet end. The alcohol adds a little burn to my taste, and the bitterness doesn't make a strong appearance, but has a pine-wood taste to me. To me this tastes like lightly-bittered wort.

My thoughts on this beer was that it has more malt character than bitterness. It's not overly sweet, but tends that way, and the grains are more involved in the taste than I am used to. I would like a little more hops bite.

Amber- brown-golden pour, dominant piny smell quite bitter with not much malt. The aftertaste is a bit pharmaceutical/chemical I'd buy it again, but it's not a first tier double for me. To b fair, I'd like to try it on tap for the purest assessment.
