Rosen Brewery is located in the heart of LA's Koreatown. From the outside, it sort of blends in with the strip mall and semi run-down storefront atmosphere of this part of Koreatown. The interior, however, is a different story. It's a very upscale looking spot with lots of wood and glass and two big screen TVs. When I dropped by, the clientele consisted entirely of young Koreans and the atmosphere was hostpitable.

The brewing equipment is visible in a glass-walled corner of the building. In addition to a decent sized bar and plenty of tables for interior dining, Rosen has a full sushi bar, a nice patio for outdoor dining, and a good sized room for private parties. In addition to the sushi bar, menu items include Korean and Japanese specialties and a decent range of Italian dishes. Chicken skewers with tamarind sauce made a very nice appetizer. For a main course, I went with a nice dish of Korean beef barbecue with salad and kimchee. Beers include Rosen Light, Koreatown Ale, Sunset Red, Hollywood Stout, and a wheat beer that was sold out when I stopped in. I found the Red Ale to be the best of the selection. It's somewhat akin to St. Rogue Red, although less hoppy.

The service was attentive, but I arrived before the real dinner crowd on a relatively quiet Tuesday evening. I can't vouch for service during primetime weekend dining hours. I found Rosen to be a real gem and look forward to going back for sushi and during a time when the crowd is a bit thicker.

An odd little duck place in the Koreatown district of Los Angeles.

First thing first, if you like Asian design flair, then you should visit this place. Everything is done in black marble and laquered red woods with appropriate touches of chrome and steel.

The celings in this place are high ~30 feet or more and the brewery certainly reflects it. There is a ton of room behind the floor to ceiling glass that shields the club/resturant/bar from the brewery. At night they have colored pin spots dancing off the copper and steel of the tanks.

I like to sit at the big marble bar in the front and sample the house beers, some of which are quite good. But if you're looking for hops or high alcohol speciality beers, you'll have to search elsewhere. (Apparently in talking with one of the former brewers he said the recipes were hopped down to adjust for the local preference towards non-hoppy brews)

Food during the day tends towards slighty twisted interpertations of American pub grub. After 5pm though you can request the special Korean menu and try some really adventurous stuff. (Highly recommended)

Very slick place. Too bad it's a little dicey to get too for this Valley boy.
