16.9oz dark brown bottle. Freshness date on label.
This strong Red Ale is a Barley Wine.
It pours a nice root beer color with a yellowish beige head.
A dark rum fuminess rises up. A sweet nutty malt smell follows.
Flavors of toffee and sweet malt extract are quite potent. A mild taste of candy sugar and hint of mint linger in the background.
Sharp-edged orange zest and tart lime-like bitterness provide an ample hoppiness to counter the heavy maltiness. A slight peppery spiciness gives this brew a nice finishing taste.
Throughout, a taste of rum and fruit punch comes to mind.
This brew packs a wallop!

I tried this beer at the Figuira Restaurant in Sao Paulo. This is a big beer and now I see why. The label says red ale, but beer advocate lists it as a barleywine...which is now why I didnt like it. Not a barleywine fan and do not share the smae enjoyment with this beer as the 11 previous reviewers. The beer was rich red with white head. The smell and taste were dominated by alcohol, with mild presence of malt/grain. The mouthfeel was bad due to the high ABV that was not well balanced. Sorry...this was not a beer I enjoyed.

A- This beer pours a dense clear deep red-garnet body with a thick creamy head that sticks to the glass with each sip. There is a gentle sea of microcarbonation that works its way to the surface.

S- The dry rich caramel has some toffee notes and some jammy notes come through as it opens. The finish has a wet clay and woody caramel finish with a hint of green hops.

T- The rich caramel malt turns brassy as the beer opens up and a soft green dry hop flavor pokes through in the finish. There is a slight tartness and woody character to the hop bitterness that lingers after the sip.

M- the medium mouthfeel has a nice warming alcohol heat that compliments the malt flavors very nicely.

O- The nice full hop bitterness and alcohol warmth really support the malt flavors making this a unique but very nice barley wine and I think this would really age nicely, if I had more.

Super-Wednesday tasting with another gift Kel dear, enjoying the late winter. Appearance: Red, translucent, creamy foam with average fugacity, helping to maintain temperature. Aroma: Fruity Malt. Taste: alcohol at the inlet and outlet, think BBGolden brings more flavor; this felt that the aroma of the flavor, at least lacks the metal.

Baden Baden Red Ale could be named easily "Baden Baden Barley Wine". This excelent beer is produced in the State of São Paulo, in a microbrewerie located in the city of Campos do Jordão. Alcohol content is 9,2%. Recipe includes chocolate and caramel malt, Malt extract and glucose syrup.
Toffe and caramel aroma, alcoholic, warming beer. Well balanced bitterness. One of the best brazilian beers in my opinion. Baden Baden Brewerie and Eisenbahn Brewerie (Blumenau, SC) are currently producing excelent beers, and they will soon be followed for many other small breweries all over the country.

This was the third beer I'd had while staying here at the Hilton Hotel in Sao Paulo... and what a step up.

Pours a rich, deep ruby/mahogany, crystal clear, with a rich, thick, luxurious head that is there until the very last drop, with awesome lacing. This is how I want all my rich, amber ales to look like. Perfect. Without flaw.

Aroma is big time hops... floral and bright, with a rich, malty sweetness. This reminds me more of some strong American Reds than it does any English Barleywine I've ever met.

Taste is extremely hop forward, bright and floral. Malty sweetness hits mid-palate and runs richly through the finish, but it's not cloying at all. Bitterness is bracing and balancing, and is impeccably smooth.

It's a little thin, but super smooth, just awesome carbonation. Silky smooth.

Drinkability is excellent, big malt and hop flavors and smooth mouth work well together, but it's a little thin, which takes just a note away.

I'm not sure where this is available outside Brazil, if anywhere, but I'd recommend searching this out, and if you make it to Brazil... it's a must-try.

Here's to more from Baden Baden!

Thanks to BitterBeerFace for bringing this back from Brazil. Bob explained that in all his time in Brazil this is hands down the best beer he had in the country. I can see why. What an impressive beer micro brewed in a country not known for spectacular beer. Thanks for sharing my friend.

Appearance: Pours a dark copper color with a white head. Nice clarity.

Smeel: Sweet dark malts, booze and a spiced rum attribute, hints of caramel and fruits.

Taste: This is a dominantly sweet big boozy Barley Wine. It has toffee caramel chocolate and coffee flavors to go with that rum attribute.

Mouthfeel: Warmingly alcoholic and yet soothingly sweet and sticky.

Drinkability: It is not a poundable, chuggable beer at it's size but I certainly wanted more. I would consider it drinkable.

Brazil; be proud of this one.
Thanks again Bob.

Hope this is helpful,

Poured from Bottle ( label says red ale) at Anhanguera Bar in Sao Paulo. Poured into Baden Baden glass. Poured a red copper color with thick white head nice retention. Smells of sweet toffee, thick malt aroma, and hint of alcohol. Taste is rich carmel flavors, bourbon bread pudding, slight rasin and plum flavors. Mouthfeel like all of Baden Baden beers is incredible smooth, which helps makes this beer while full body drink a lot easier. By the way I had this beer with an Alesmith Dead by Dawn red that I brought from Carlsbad. While the Alesmith was the hands down favorite this beer wasnt that far off in votes at the table.

The apperance is of a really nice red, a bit of amber too. The foam is quite persistant.
Too much alcoholic and with a great bitterness.
Some berries in the flavour and aroma (strawberry, raspeberry and cherry), a bit of wine flavour too - quite interesting this beer. Unfortunately, the alcohol takes too much space in the aroma and taste.
I guess it would be better if I drink it with some red meat or don't drink as much as I did..

malted odor, docicado, fruity.
Moderate body, with a final and lasting sweetened.
moderately sweet flavor, moderate bitterness.
alcohol very well set, does not feel its entirety.
perhaps the best beer in Brazil ..

One of my beer related priorities was complete when I ordered a bottle of this at Salommão in São Paulo a few days ago. This beer has received good marks, so that obviously was the reason I wanted to try this beer. So on to it:

The first part of the beer pours murky brown, but pouring more into my glass gets a deep, dark red color with a nice head on top and good stick. The aroma is very fruity. Ester like. Entering the mouth, it is a smooth liquid, but with a sticky, viscous, and sugary body. Lots of flavor here. It's fruity and piney with a good hoppiness. There's burnt sugar and caramel notes hitting the palate. A slight astringent note puts a close to this massive beer.

Intense and tasty. My bottle seemed a little aged, and it was served way too cold at first. It took two hours of sipping and warming up to get this beer to its optimal level, which it almost lived up to my very high expectations. Don't get me wrong, this is a good beer.

Oh, and why doesn't anyone import Baden Baden into the United States? Hello, Shelton Brothers!
