Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. III Issue I:

Sizable head drops quickly to a thin lacing. A shade away from complete opacity of darkness. Smells of fresh crushed cocoa beans, dried plums and faint charcoal. Slick and creamy medium body, a bit lighter on the palate than expected. Kicks off with a milk chocolate flavor, with some mild roasted coffee tagging along. Alcohol is on the breath from the first sip, but never becomes hot; clean with a quick splash of dried plum fruitiness. Hops are here, but just to balance--no flexing of super alpha bitterness here, which is fine by us, as we dig where the malt is leading. The roasted grain chocolate character soon turns to a cocoa powder flavor as the maltiness swings to the dry side in the end.

Very easy to sip and a complete contrast to the hyped stouts of today. Balance and subtlety can go a long way even when it comes to big beers. Two thumbs up from the bros.

Angel City is a home team brewery here in LA and I was really stoked when I saw this at wholefoods for a whopping 3.99. Welp, I got what I paid for. I am a big imperial stout fan and this was easily one of the worst I have had (granted I have had some of the best in the game). Either way, first drain pour stout (not because i was angry but just because i sealed it up and put it in the fridge and would have rather drank anything else until it eventually went bad)

oh well.

I also picked up and otter creek RIS. hoping thats way better.

Angel City Brewing is new to me, despite the fact that I live in Los Angeles. I'm going to have to try more of their brews if this stout is indicative of Angel City's quality. A nice drink, despite a really bad label. (Hey, I can be as superficial as the next guy!)

Pours a deep brown/black with a short lived tan head. Assertive and appealing dark coffee nose with hints of bitter dark chocolate. A very nice rich nose that carries through the entire beer.

Tastes of rich, deep black quality espresso with undertones of rich bitter black chocolate. There is also a bit of dark candied cherries in the taste...sort of like those brandied-chocolate cherries. Very nice.

Mouthfeel is quite nice with a creamy texture that is appealing and a wonderful finish of..you guessed it...rich coffee/espresso and dark bitter chocolate.

So, if you like those rich, somewhat creamy espresso, dark bitter chocolate stouts, you'll like this one. Lot of quality in this beer. A nice (and surprising) drink!

Picked up on a whim in Escondido, and I finally get to the last bottle I brought back from vacation. Pours a nice black color, with about 9 fingers of mocha colored foam. Seriously, with a moderately gentle pour, it overflowed my glass a couple times. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate and a mere suggestion of hops. On the palate, this one is extremely drinkable, with a bit of bitterness, some roast and coffee/chocolate. Surprisingly good, esp. after the adventure in pouring.

Appearance: Pours the obligatory midnight brown with a tannish head that leaves clumy dots of foam around the sides of the chalice

Smell: Milk chocolate with roasted grains, underneath

Taste: Opens with a milk chocolate flavor that adds a roasted grain and minty tobacco character by mid-palate; after the swallow, the sweeter flavors prevail, though the roast, mint and tobacco elements linger in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: A bit too sweet for me, but not a bad beer overall; I also don't really care for the harsh mint and tobacco flavors

Bottle shared at the December Santa Cruz tasting. Pours almost black with a creamy light-brown head. Super roasty, lots of burnt coffee along with bitter dark chocolate and soy sauce. Oily charred molasses. A little thin but somehow not boozy at all. Just not that inspiring overall.

I bought a 22oz. bottle of this beer from the Angel City Brewery.

Stritch Stout is an opaque black, and it has a nice fluffy retentive tan head. Lacing is prominent.

The aroma is of roasted malt with notes of chocolate and coffee. There is a slight alcoholic smell as well.

The taste is of sweet roasted malt and chocolate with light grassy hops at first, followed by black coffee and alcohol. The beer leaves a moderate hop bitterness and a black coffee aftertaste. There is also a slight hint of grape in the aftertaste.

The body is medium to full, the carbonation is moderate, and the finish is slightly dry.

This beer is a real treat, but with 10% ABV, you can't drink too many. Goes great with chocolate desserts.
