Had this at Sottocasa Harlem. A neopolitan pizzaria that serves a very nice selection of Italian micro brews. Wonderful dark Amber color, bready malts on the nose, faint floral aromas. Tastes like a refreshing English Pale Ale and can taste faint nuts on the back end. High carbonation which adds to the refreshingness. Goes well with food. Enjoyed this and would get this again.

Over-rated. Paid a lot for this beer, but couldn't force down more a couple of mouthfuls before I poured it down the drain.

Thanks to Ben and the previous tenants for this one!

Pours into a straight sided glass with a ton of foam, filling the whole glass immediately. Was a little worried it would be infected, but thankfully it wasn't. Lasting tan head with lots of clumpy lacing in the glass.

Aroma is subdued, minor toasty malt is present, somewhat earthy.

Taste is much more earthy, malt forward with some toastiness and nutty flavors from the chestnuts. Feel is a little thin and overly attenuated, but it's a unique tasting beer. Overall not bad, probably best shared.

A: This beer literally shot out from the bottle as soon as the swingtop was popped. That which didn't end up against the wall poured with a big head that left some decent lace. The beer is deep amber coloured with some mahogany hints.

S: The smell is very complex, with quite a big body. I would say there is a choclatey hint that forms the main body of the smell along with the chestnut character. Fermented apricots was the only other part I could identify.

T: Very sweet taste, reminiscent of dark fruits like plums, prunes, dates and red red apples. Very prominent alcohol taste (even when considering the 8% ABV). In my opinion the alcohol taste is way too strong in this beer.

M: Carbonation is medium, but pleasant. Mouthfeel is relatively oily and medium bodied. I would even mention here that the alcohol presence is very distractiong.

O: Does shine in some aspects, but only an above average beer overall.

750ml bottle 8,0% Abv.
Served lightly chilled in an over sized wine glass.
Bottled on: 06/06/2012
BBE: 03/2012

I have always wanted to try an Italian chestnut beer; I cannot believe I finally found one at a local bottle store!

On a side note, my bottle lists this as an amber lager rather than an amber ale like the bottle pictured here on BA.

Appearance: Well, my first impression of the appearance was that of an amber jet shooting towards the ceiling! This was one bad gusher! Thankfully we had enough glasses around to catch most of the beer.
Once things have finally settled down, the body is a moderately hazed amber brown colour and shows red highlights and golden edges when held to the light. The head is massive, beige in colour and sadly displays relatively poor retention and leaves only patchy lace.

Smell: Chestnuts! I know it is a chestnut beer, but I didn't expect the first sniff to yield a ton of earthy chestnuts. Further inspection yields notes of sweet toffee, sweet dark fruits (dates and raisins), toasted malt, more nuttiness, brandy and a light belgianesque spicing.

Taste: Chestnuts are certainly not as prominent as in the nose and are almost absent from the first sip. Toffee, caramalised brown sugar and toasted malt dominate, with dark fruits, golden raisins and a BSDA like spicing also present. As the beer warms, earthy chestnut, brandy and a light alcohol warmth become apparent.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, lightly sticky with a high level of carbonation.

Overall: Aside from the gushing, this is another good beer from Grado Plato.
