This beer has a very nice hoppy, citrus taste with a sweet malt flavor that really grabs your interest. I'm not good at detecting all the aromas and ingredients of the recipe like my fellow BA's, but there is indeed something interesting at work here. One BA used the word caramel. That may be it. But I know a great IPA and I enjoy a well defined balance of hop and malt. This one has that balance. The hops are not overly potent, but the dry hop aroma and taste is certainly there.

Although my travels rarely take me to the south bay, I happened to be working walking distance from Red Car, so I finally got to stop in for a pint and chose the IPA. It's a bit darker and murkier than most IPAs: dark orange, bordering on brown. It has a nice thick head. Piney hops dominate the smell, probably some dry-hopping used. It's a pleasant-tasting beer that is reminiscent of some of the good west coast IPAs but not quite on par with the best of them. A bit of iced-tea-like flavor just muck things up enough to keep it from really excelling. However, I'll certainly stop in for another pint next time I'm in Torrance.

Presentation: Sampled on draft during a recent visit to the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant.

Appearance: Very hazy darkish orange color with a home-made marmalade hue. In fact, on the bar and unlit, it even has a light brown wooden color. The head was decent in size and carbonation levels very Cask-like.

Nose: Hoppy with a very pine like oily aroma. Some citric qualities but they are masked by a light whiff of alcohol and a rather delicate sweetness. Inviting odors.

Taste: The citric qualities come through in a sharp finish edging the well balanced sweet malts and bitter hops that comprise this offering. Earthy hops with a nice grassy feel overall.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability: Cask-like feel, served on draft it benefits from a subdued carbonation that helps the flavors of this IPA take over. Partaken with little resistance, this IPA has a lovely taste and body profile that could all too easily make it a session beer.

Overall: A very different take on an IPA, and not your usual run-of-the-mill Brewpub IPA. Dare I say it has a very English Cask-like quality that endears me. Highly enjoyable and it pairs extremely well with the stronger tasting foods on the menu.

Pint style glass. The keg was freshly tapped.

A burnt unclear orange. Very unfiltered so the appearance is quite dirty. Honey amber highlights on the sides of the glass. A good foamy head and draping lace. The scents are hoppy and citrus. Malts and a caramel escape the hops clutches and appear in the back ground.

Flavors are strong hops. A very nice citrus provide a bitter bite. There is a fruity sweetness of plumbs which help the sweet malts to not be forgotten. The malts appear at the end and provide a good after taste. Some grassy notes appear but this IPA is really for a hop head. The flavors are very well thought out.

This IPA drinks smooth and easy. A bit sticky but that is nice. The alcohol is felt but only adds to the bite of this IPA. It leaves a bit of sweetness on the palate but it does not linger too long.

Overall, I really enjoyed this IPA. I will have another, and another.

Poured a very cloudy red/orange almost brown) color, with a nice thick head. Left a thick sheet of lacing as it drained. Aroma is mainly citrusy hops. The hops come on strong in the initial taste, but there is a lot of malt balance that comes in during the middle. Mouthfeel is what really makes this stand out - it is very smooth and creamy, with a low carbonation level. This was the best beer I tried at the Red Car, and I am looking forward to the growler waiting for me in the fridge!

Had this beer at the restaurant, in a 12oz glass. Appearance is cloudy, almost orange in color. About a 1/2" head that laced on the way down. The mouth feel is smooth. It felt a bit more carbonated to me, but that may be because it followed a Special Bitter. Taste was good, but it didn't stand out. The hops are there, but not too prominent.

All in all, not a bad IPA. Because the restaurant is so close, I'm sure I'll have more.

A: Pretty much the color of adobe. Cloudy...mysterious. Usually don't see this in an IPA. I like it. Very minimal blueish tinted head with just a small ring.

S: Loads of citrus but the primary player is lemon. Served in a pint glass so I wasn't getting optimal sniffing angles going on.

T: More lemon with a syrupy alcohol nature. Some pear, fresh grass clippings and caramel round out the rest of the flavors. Finishes with some bitterness and a grainy aftertaste. Not too bitter, nor too complex for that matter. This is more of a DIPA than IPA.

M: Medium body and slightly prickly.

D: Big beer. Not bad. Could use some more dry hopping though.

On tap at the brewery out of a pint glass. Actually 9% ABV (above is wrong as of writing this).

A: Probably the cloudiest IPA I will ever see. They claim unfiltered and that's no joke. I think they purposely cloud it up. Looks like a hefe basically. Interesting change of pace.

S: Smell is quite nice, citrousy, lemon for sure, and pretty floral. Like a fresh bouquet of flowers.

T: Not your usual 9% IPA. It's pretty much an underhopped double, or...a high gravity single. 65 IBU lends to a nice bitterness that isn't harsh and the hop flavor is very fresh and nice. For so much alcohol I actually thought it was hidden quite well in this batch. Definitely a clean fermentation. Tastes of fruits and caramel plus loads of nice hops are present.

M: Nice carbonation level, and a medium bodied beer that goes down pretty easy, but with a lot of flavor. More of a sipper though.

D: It's drinkable for what it is. I couldn't have more than a couple though. Highly enjoyable before dinner beer. Went great with some thai spring roll appetizers.

The best beer at this brewery (at the time) by far.

Draft, consumed at brewery on 01/07/08.

Brassy-hued pour with nice frothy head that lasted a while.

Aroma is hoppy resin/grapefruit.

Grapefruit hop flavor hits first, then some carbonation astringency. A sweet malt flavor slides in near the end and some lingering bitterness finishes things up.

Well done and fairly well balanced.

64 ounce growler brought back from the pub and split with a few friends, cost was fourteen bucks without the glass, poured into my Port imperial pint glass, color is a darker golden orange with highlights at times, 3/4 inch soapy white head that stays around for a minute or so, some lacing, even later on after a swirl, aroma was awesome with a whole lot of hoppiness, pine mostly and it was great, a little bit of lemon, floral too at times when it warmed, some earthiness, faint toasted malts, and mild sweetness, starts off with a slightly sweet citrusy hop taste, light sweet malt in the middle, slightly bitter in the finish but lacks depth, was expecting big things after enjoying the aroma for a few minutes by itself, pretty sweet like a DIPA at times, could have used more dry hopping, not as balanced as you would hope, changes a lot as it warms, dry slightly sweet, and citrusy mouthfeel, medium to full bodied, light to medium carbonation, taste lingers for a few minutes, could drink a few glasses but alcohol is not hidden completely, sweetness would get to me after a while, want a more balanced beer with hops offsetting some of the malt profile, might drink again if I go back here, worth trying if you find yourself here

Growler fill from the brewery. Aroma is hoppy, traditional American citrusy aroma. Appearance is a cloudy orange. Yes, it is unfiltered! A small tan head that fades. A clean, hoppy beer, hop flavor up front, but balanced with the malt. Very drinkable. I've had most of the growler right now... Overall, not too assertive for an IPA, but very tasty and drinkable.

Served in a pint glass that was way to cold. Now for the good stuff.
While watch the yeast pop out of the open fermenter I let this one lose some of the chill it had when it was placed in front of me. A unfiltered deep golden body with a nice white foamy head that had good retention.
The aroma was strong of fresh hops, not to much but enough to be stronger than the malt profile.
At first taste the malt was sweet and caramel like with some toast, then the hop flavor came in... and did they ever. Tons of flavor. Done in the vain of an English style IPA this is one of the most balanced ones I have had. The bitterness is mild but the flavor. Most people expect all bitterness from IPA's and forget about the best part of the hop, the flavor. This one has it!
This flavorful IPA stands by itself on the west coast. Get some.

Pours an unfiltered, orange-amber color with considerable haze. Head is off white with good lacing.

Aroma is nice, but not anything out of the ordinary. There is a basic fruitiness, as well as citrusy hops and toasty malts. The flavor is balanced, with moderate hops and a nice, full fruitiness. The toasty malt character is back, adding some malt depth. It could use some more bitterness and hop flavor.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, while retaining good malt character and depth. I could have used some more hops for my first IPA on the West Coast, but I liked this enough and would have more (no way the ABV is 9%.)

Had this on tap at the restaurant. It's a burnt-orange color and very hazy. I love me some unfiltered beers! Smallish head with moderate retention and some soapy lacing.

Smells citrusy and slightly piney. Clean malt aroma in the background.

Taste showcases a nice bouquet of hop flavors - citrusy, piney, and earthy with a touch of resin. Clean malt plays a supporting role in the middle before hop bitterness takes over and lingers until the end. Finish is slightly woody.

Medium bodied and well carbonated with a dry finish.

This is a really enjoyable IPA. Not over the top, but it still has enough hop flavor and aroma to give you your fix. The alcohol is masked very well. I didn't know it was 9% ABV until I was almost finished with my pint.

This is one of my favorite fresh IPA's that exist today. I have enjoyed it on tap more times than I can count and out of a growler numerous times as well.

The appearance is classic unfiltered! What more need be said. Nice quarter inch foam on top that dissipates in a few minutes.

The smell is terrific. Yes it does have citrus overtones and a sweet hoppy aroma. It's almost perfect!

Taste is PERFECT! Smooth, rich and hoppy with a brilliant back end finish that lingers perfectly on the tongue.

Mouthfeel = perfect and balanced

Drinkability is outstanding. It actually goes down to easily and one must pace themselves or have someone else drive you home. It is a good problem to experience.

This owner of this fine establishment is also the brewmaster and he has perfected this IPA in my opinion. Bravo! Get to this jewel of a brewery soon. You will not regret it.

On tap at Red Car Brewery in Torrance, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.

Appearance: Beyond hazy. Appearance is very muddy; an opaque yellow/orange.

Smell: Dull citrus.

Taste: Muddled hops. No layers to speak of. No malt.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied.

Overall: A dull IPA that's not even fun to look at. If an IPA is hazy, I'd at least hop for a punch of dry-hopped aromatics - but there's nothing there. The best word I can think of here is 'muddy'. At least they make a killer French dip sandwich.

Tasted May 8th 2011 (from notes)

A - swampy, golden/amber/copper, one finger off white head and some crazy lacing

S - alcohol, flowers, bananas, citrus, pine needles, toasted/sweet malt, wheat, yeasty, pungent and a bit sour

T - alcohol, sour, yeast, wheat, sweet malt, toasted, grass, orange, lime, tropical fruits and flowers, soap and something I can't put my finger on

M - sticky, medium acidity, long finish. Big hops and bigger malt

D - drinks like any awesome ipa...awesome! Wish this was bottled and distributed. But, love that I can get a growled whenever I want

Final thought - if you have not had this and you like hops and or malts, you need to try this

IPA? You got to be kidding me. It smelled and tasted like a red ale. No hoppiness whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I asked the waitress if she had made a mistake and served me the red ale. Ordered their sampler of brews and they all tasted the same: sour and very below average. The only difference between the beers was their porter. Same sour flavor with a bit of smokiness.

Never again.

Served on tap at the brewpub in a 20oz schooner glass.
A: Orange/amber color with a light head and plentiful carbonation
S: Citrus, malt and hops
T: Both the hops and malt are most prevalent with a note of citrus/orange
M: Pronounced hop bite, but not as strong as many IPAs
O: A classic IPA at a good local brewpub
