Pint at the brewpub tonight, second pint of two I had there tonight, color is a dark brown with dark red edges, 3/4 inch creamy beige head, some lacing at the beginning, aroma has roasted malts and barley, some burnt caramel, rich malts, mild smokiness, and mild sweetness, starts off with roasted malts, fades into some sweetness in the middle, roasty malts are also in the finish as well but they are not very complex and taste is pretty thin for its style, not very flavorful and dry like you hope a porter is, roasted, slightly sweet and chewy mouthfeel, thin bodied, saying it would be medium would be generous, higher level of carbonation, taste does not linger, pretty light feel overall, can be heavy at times though, not easy drinking, taste is not complex enough to keep coming back, high carbonation makes it harder to get down too, would not drink again, not recommended

Draft, consumed at brewery on 01/07/08.

Very dark brown with deep brown highlights. Nice head retention, no lacing.

Roasted aroma (subtle).

Flavorful! Nuts and roasted sweet malt and coffee. Some bitterness on finish.

A good, strong porter, this will be my first order next time I'm at Red Car.

Presentation: Sampled on draft during a recent visit to the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant.

Appearance: Almost no head whatsoever, just a clinging thin ring of cocoa brown bubbles. Dark brown chocolate body that has some opacity. But not much.

Nose: A delicate nose that included whiffs of dark chocolate, cocoa powder, a light caramel and some hints of roast coffee.

Taste: A nicely balanced smooth feel, the individual flavor components - dark chocolate, roasted coffee, scorched caramel, cocoa, and sweet milk chocolate – never dominate but they synergize extremely well to make a great drinking beer.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability: Again, like the IPA, this had a Cask-like feel. But unlike the IPA, this could have done with just a little more “life”. Another great drinking beer from Red Car, it downs well.

Overall: Not the strongest Porter, strength wise or flavor wise. During my short stay at the Red Car Brewery & Restaurant, several Growlers were filled with the South Loop Porter, as well as a few Schooner Glasses, which may very well support my conviction that this is very accomplished quaffable dark ale that is a dangerous candidate for a Session Porter.

On tap at red car brewery

A: poured a very dark brown with a half finger of head and very little lacing left on the glass.

S: nice mild roastiness aromas with hints of chocolate, sweet malts, and coffee.

T: pleasent thin based roasted flavors with chocolate, coffee, and caramel that blended well in this porter.

M: light body for a porter that had little carbonation.

D: drank real good for a poter but was a bit on the thin side. This beer actually stood out more than the other 4 house brews

Pours a very dark mahogany brown. No head but small lines of clinging lace find their way down the glass. Sadly the scents are mild to weak. Some mild dark chocolate and sweet molassas appear. Some very weak toasted bread and a burnt coffee find there way through but the scents are lacking. They have a very hard time representing this porter.

Happily the flavors are more forthright than the aromas. A good dark chocolate flavor, soon to be suplanted by some tasty coffee and toasted bread. A sweet caramel and brown sugar are not to be held back for too long. This porter balances the strong flavors with the sweet flavors very well. No one flavor takes over and all find their way to the taste buds. A very refined porter.

This is one smooth porter. As it warms the flavors reveal themselves more fluidly and it becomes smoother on the palate. Medium bodied and very easy to drink. This could be a session porter. One is not enough to be sure.

When at the Red Car do not pass this porter by.

Reviewed 1/2/2009 (Tap @ Red Can Brewery, Torrance, CA):

Pours a very dark brown color body, small off-white head. Chocolately roasted aroma. Sweetness too. Roasted coffee chocolate taste. Nice chocolate goodness. Carbonated mouthfeel. Some nuttiness in the taste. Very roasted.

A: Deep dark brown with some light allowed through in the thin areas of the glass. Oatmeal colored wispy head floats on top.

S: Small aroma of bakers chocolate, coffee and roasted barley.

T: First impression is cold coffee with moments of slight cola twang. Lot of roasted chestnut with a buttery backdrop. Finishes with a good roastedness which is more pronounced in the aftertaste than the beer itself.

M: Thin for a porter with a fuzzy mouthfeel.

D: Mellow, easy drinking porter. Nothing over the top but good drinkability.
