Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This robust Coffee Stout is a mouthful of flavor! A dark, roasty grain bill stands as the backdrop for a galaxy of coffee aroma and flavor, made possible by local organic bean roasters Dynamite Roastery. A Pisgah fan favorite, Valdez is brewed bi-annually and never lasts as long as the flavor.

Received as an extra in a trade. Pours dark brown with a finger of mocha head. Nose is full of espresso, chocolate, slight roast, and toffee. Well rounded taste....sweet mocha, bitter chocolate, and a touch of vanilla. Body is medium with low carbs. Pleasantly surprised by this coffee stout....

This coffee stout pours to a medium, creamy tan head on a slightly effervescent, almost-impenetrably black body with glimmers of mahogany at its base; head retention is modest and lacing is good, consisting of superfine-grained bands and caverns. The nose is medium-big, leading with dark donut-shop coffee notes that are shot through with threads of cocoa and molasses, backed by a deeper, roastier character that swings the aroma towards bitter; slight alcohol overtones top things off. The palate is more bitter than the nose would suggest, but not overly so; it is a nice melange of black coffee, baker's chocolate, more subtle molasses notes, and hints of toffee and cola. While definitely coffee-forward, this stout does a nice job of letting the base beer show through. The finish is a modest hit of bitter chocolate and cola, followed by the onset of a mild bitter chocolate/coffee flavor that lingers for awhile. Mouthfeel is thin for the full body, improving drinkability, and the texture is medium-creamy, slightly sticky, and quite peppery from the enthusiastic carbonation. (12 oz can, 77 days after pkg)

12 oz can 9/6/16 poured into a tulip. Pours pitch black, a thin tan head that dissapates immediately to a thin ring of lace. The aroma is...as you can imagine, heavy on coffee and roasted malt. Slight anise. The taste is in line, with some smoke and bitterness. Surprisingly, the mouthfeel not is not overly heavy, the carbonation is a touch below medium. Overall, a tasty coffee stout, fans of the bitterness will enjoy it. Going to hold on to one for a while to see how it develops.

A bit of an old bottle, had become tart and fizzy.

Super dark with a nice tan head that leaves lacing after it dissipates. It is difficult to detect anything other than coffee and sweetness in the nose as the coffee is huge. The taste is a bit different than the nose. While the coffee and malty sweetness are there as the prominent flavors a burnt taste comes in to wash them away. This acrid taste is a bit strong. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with a pleasant level of carbonation that feels slightly lower than I expected.

Update 7/24/16: Changes to palate and nose reflected here. Nose is sweet roasted malts with coffee and an almost maple like sweetness. Coffee is big in the nose but pleasant. The taste has a nice roasty twang with coffee and a bit of sweetness that makes this taste like a sweetened, creamy, iced coffee.
