Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This robust Coffee Stout is a mouthful of flavor! A dark, roasty grain bill stands as the backdrop for a galaxy of coffee aroma and flavor, made possible by local organic bean roasters Dynamite Roastery. A Pisgah fan favorite, Valdez is brewed bi-annually and never lasts as long as the flavor.

I'm guessing this is the same beer. Canned 6.2 percent. Not really an imperial.

Notes of fresh roasted coffee and nutty malt are evident as soon as the can opens. Lightly sweet chocolate and coffee grounds add depth. There may be a touch of acrid/metallic character there. Chocolate is fairly prevalent, but coffee definitely dominates the aroma. Body is fairly rich and extremely smooth.

Flavor follows suit, with a backbone of lightly sweet chocolate becoming modestly bitter and fairly coffee forward mid palate, carrying into a roasty finish. Very high quality coffee flavor, and balances well with the specialty malt sweetness.

Delicious! Perfect consistency and texture with a strong coffee taste that is powerful but smooth.

Pour pitch black with a foamy tan head.

The smell is roasted coffee and dark malts. Simple but very inviting.

The taste is rich, malty and a lot of coffee.

The feel is a little thin but the abv is pretty low for the style so not really a surprise.

Overall a superb beer, definitely my favourite Pisgah brew so far.

This beer is dark as night, with a minimal mocha head that rims the glass. You smell coffee right off the bat, and the first sip is the same. Back of the mouth you get some chocolate, roasty maltiness. Great mouthfeel. This is not too thick or creamy, but a good balance to make it not thin. I honestly think this would compete well with FBS or WnB.

Fantastic beer. Used to only come on draft or in bombers. This year they have stepped up production and began canning select beers. Thank god they chose this one!

Appearance: Black as night, minimal light head that fades to basically nothing.

Aroma: Wow! Smacks you right in the nose. Coffee, some booze dark malts, reminds you of a lighter version of Kahlua.

Taste: Bitter in the right places, but just enough sweetness to balance it out. Lots of coffee in these notes. This is damn near perfect for and maybe the standard for me anyway in regard to coffee stouts. Not to be confused with an imperial stout.

Overall: Very well made beer from Pisgah, one of my favorite breweries from NC has another winner.

Of the Coffee infused beers of Asheville, this one takes the cake. Come in 6 pack cans this year. No more bottles. Brewed with coffee from a few blocks away at Dynamite Coffee. Very, very good beer. The right amount of coffee without being obnoxious. This is a winner.
