Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This robust Coffee Stout is a mouthful of flavor! A dark, roasty grain bill stands as the backdrop for a galaxy of coffee aroma and flavor, made possible by local organic bean roasters Dynamite Roastery. A Pisgah fan favorite, Valdez is brewed bi-annually and never lasts as long as the flavor.

This was a solidly good / surprising coffee stout as I received it as an extra in a trade. Nothing special or amazing, just a good satisfying coffee stout.

Pours a pitch black body, head is a tan color. Head retention is average and so is lacing.

Smell is similar to cold brewed coffee. Notes of green coffee beans, oil, and fresh roasted, charred beans are prevalent. This smells like I stepped into a roastery. Slight notes of chocolate are present, hops and alcohol aren't detected.

Taste is big on coffee, acidic and slightly bitter. Getting some green herbaceous notes also. Biscuit malts are in the mix along with charred oak. Beer ends with a hint of chocolate, alcohol and hops are light.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated. Unfortunately head died quickly, leaving something to be desired. Beer leaves a slight astringency in the aftertaste.

Overall this was a very tasty coffee stout. In your face coffee flavors, no chocolate, caramel, vanilla/bourbon to mask it. A bit on the bitter spectrum of coffee but I can appreciate the raw flavors which is becoming rarer these days.

Roasted malts with lots of chocolate and coffee. Substantial body for only a 6.2% beer, I typically don't like less than 9-10% but this is great!

Poured from 12 oz. can into Sam Adams glass.

A - Pours a dark roasty brown color with a frothy khaki-hued head. Tons of lacing.

S - Freshly ground coffee, chocolate, and graham cracker.

T - Great cold-brew coffee taste complimented by smoke and velvety chocolate. The finish is full of almost oatmeal like glutinous notes.

M - Mouthfeel is creamy and glutinous.

O - Really reminds me of a more sessionable version of Victory at Sea, minus the vanilla. A must-try for fans of coffee stouts. By far the best stout I have ever had from a can!

A 12oz can picked up at Brusin Ale's Asheville, NC 4.2015. This beer is fresh.

L - Pitch black with 2 fingers of head and huge tan lace left on the top of the brew, and lacing left all over the slides of the glass

S - Java coffee! Wow..amazing

T - Coffee! For those who like. Big malty body and the coffee is fresh and blends in perfectly.

F - Full bodied. Well carbonated.

O - An incredible coffee stout for 6.2%. So much flavor. And it won't knock you out. A perfect light weight coffee stout in my opinion. Tasty as heck.
