From notes taken 10/13/16:

Clear, deep copper brown, capped with foamy tan head of medium retention. Molasses, light tartness on the nose. Equal parts overly sweet toffee/molasses/black cherry and just-right toasty, probably a result of being watered down for the style (compare German and American craft equivalents) but still high in alcohol. A touch of rotting leafy matter. Still, it is quite good. Exhibits some similarities to a Euro Dark Lager, but a Doppelbock for sure. Full-bodied, packed with suds, choppy then creamy, warming, dry for what it is.

I purchased this bottle during an excursion to NYC during which I popped 'round at Eataly to see what they had in store for me (literally). I know that every bottle is a detour from The CANQuest (tm), but just as the cat was killed by its innate curiosity, mine drives me at times. C'est la guerre!

From the bottle: "To produce this deep red coloured beer, we roast the malted barley at a high temperature, which gives the beer an extraordinarily smooth and full flavored taste with hints of caramel and liquorice."

I Pop!ped the cap & sat back to contemplate as to how to proceed. I finally hit upon a solid pour, just to see what would transpire. It certainly did its bit as far as foaming was concerned. It really came up, topping out at two-plus fingers of light-tan head with good retention before finally falling back, leaving modest lacing behind. Color was Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was very malty sweet & while I will concede "caramel", I will see their "liqourice" & raise them treacle in its place. Mouthfeel was medium to full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was sweet, but it was not precisely caramel, nor was it what I would call either licorice or treacle. It had a slight sharpness, but more like burnt caramel than anything else. I have to cop to being pleasantly surprised by this since a) I had no idea what to expect & b) I have been underimpressed by this brewery's beers in the past. I would put the finish as being semi-sweet, especially due to that slight burnt tartness which was both unexpected & curious. I really felt like I got my money's worth out of this one & I would be willing to bet that you will feel the same way.

Brown in color leaving the flimsiest and thinnest of head, no lacing. Aroma was some waterlogged wood and mild roast/prune notes.

More dark fruit in the taste, some caramel, brown malt, hid alcohol decently. Average viscosity. Don't know what to pair this with. Red wine? A little bit of char to the mouthfeel. Still some dark fruit notes. Nutty stuff.

From a bottle, pours a deep amber with a dense khaki head. Malt-forward with caramel and toffee flavors. There is OK carbonation and mouth-feel has an indistinct syrupiness. Decent, but expected more for the price.
