look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5
Presentation: Sampled on draft at the San Pedro Brewing Company. Listed as Shanghai Red on the Blackboard.
Described on the Menu and Website as: Named after a world famous café called "Shanghai Red's", this ale is one of our most popular. It has a full malt palate balanced with a profound floral finish.
Appearance: Feisty brazen ruddy mahogany red with lots of ruby flashes. Dirty white head with a nice crisp carbonation.
Nose: Started like the IPA, biscuit malts and soft fruity delicate hops but this has a clean unfettered nose with a sweet angle.
Taste: Nice silky entrance. Soft sweet toasted malts that are balanced against a fruity but cutting dry bitterness. The balance is always there, but the levels of each components change throughout the drink, which lends the Shanghai Red a very attractive simple complexity. This was one of my favorites - a total surprise I have to say.
Mouthfeel: Of all the brews I tried at San Pedro Brewing Company on my first visit, this one had the best Mouthfeel. Solid and trustworthy.
Drinkability: Nicely balanced this is one was a nice surprise and very enjoyable.
Overall: Nice, I expected one of those benign sickly Reds so ubiquitous in SoCal Coastal BrewPubs, not so with the Shanghai Red. A good spin on the tried and tested.

On draft at brewery, consumed 01/21/08.
Dark reddish-brown color with white head.
No aroma from the taster glass.
Somewhat smooth, almost creamy texture. Caramel malt flavor and some hops after. Some grainy and nutty notes in the finish.
Decent.

Going to Shanghai in Round 4. On to the beer:
Dark red colored, leaving a few stings of lace around the glass. The nose provides weak sweet bready malt. And the taste is nothing to impress either. Definately on the malty side, O-fest like, but i don't like how the malt tastes. It tastes like husky, astringent sweet malt. There's a little fruitiness to at least distract from the malt. It's very light in the mouth and the carbonation level is low. One could even say this one is watery.
I hope the real Shanghai is nothing like this similarly named beer.
